Yeah, they can, actually. Like the power to prosecute a war without borders, give an "authorization" for war that specifies neither a theater nor a concrete objective, hold U.S. citizens incommunicado with no jury trial and no charges against them, engage in "rendition" of prisoners to countries that are known torturers, disregard the Convention Against Torture (18 U.S.C. 2441), conduct wiretaps on American citizens without a warrant. The legal counsel for the president at the time of 9/11 said that the president had the "authority" to order the torture of American children; his name is John Yoo, and you can look him up.
Really, where the fuck have you been the last six and a half years? I've lived in the U.S. all my life, and it seems to me that you'd have to be blind to deny that the legal and political landscape looks a lot different than it did before.

| You're the one who is trying to connect this desire to up-date an I.D. database...one that from what I see, is WAY more solid reason to have, than not to have...with a desire to "control" us, not me. |
I didn't try to connect shit. That "connection" is something in your head. If you think I'm lying, quote me.

heard of smallpox? heard of native americans being given diseased blankets? first instances of germ warfare that i am aware of. go look it up fool.

what i am saying is that the system of government and the checks and balances inherent in the westminster system (combined with a few other notable facts like compulsory voting) is far superior than the bastardised model the US has. if you wanna argue that with me fine, ill wipe the floor with you and then we can move on.
yeah, you have all the money, all the bombs and tanks. big fucking deal. you also have more poverty, more crime, huge firearm problems, less freedoms, a society corrupted by religious intolerance, and the shittiest (democratic) parliamentary system ive ever heard of.
i dont want australia to be anything more than "small potatoes", because we're fine just the way we are. it doesnt give us delusions that we have a god-given right to invade the world's nations or suspend human rights to the "enemy".
i love america (a lot) but ignorant, stupidly-nationalistic fucks like yourself give your wonderful country a bad name.

Well what the hell is this thread about anyway?! Your parallels are all there, go back and read for yourself.
And you're not even answering my question about motive, you're just making blanket statements (tired, hackneyed statements at that) about Orwellian predictions, backed by debatable "facts".
Try thinking beyond what you are TOLD to think for once and use some common sense. People who see conspiracies everywhere they look do, by definition, lose credibility. ANYONE can claim there's a "conspiracy" afoot within the government. You only have to make EXTREMELY loose connections to make such claims. But to actually support your tired, unoriginal claims, you have to show motive and provide evidence to support the claims (concrete evidence).
Your basic claim that "This is going to be used against us, the law-abiding citizens!" has no basis in fact or past history. And it's not even that revolutionary, this concept of gathering and holding I.D. information! You're all worked up about NOOOOOOTTTHHHHIIINNNGGG!!!!

That's because "motives" ultimately don't matter. Somebody can have the best motives in the world when seeking increased authority to take political action. They can be entirely noble and looking out for the good of the country. But the people who come after them may not be so noble. And that is the danger of powerful governments. If that danger didn't exist, we might as well all live under benevolent dictatorships, since a dictatorship is certainly the most efficient way to run a place.

Oh, fuck off. You think I picked this up from some website? Get this into your thick fucking head:
(1) I'm not a "conspiracy theorist." I don't think there is a "conspiracy."
(2) I do think there have been many attempts to enlarge the authority of the executive branch, sometimes at the expense of individual liberties. The fucking news provides ample evidence of this, as in the cases I mentioned above. But again, I don't think this is a fucking "conspiracy." I think that the people doing this stuff see themselves as doing it for the good of the country, even if the results haven't been good at all.

You're flailing around here. I'm not a fucking "conspiracy theorist." Those damned assumptions again.

What I'm "all worked up about" is the fact that some people seem to have a limitless trust in the self-restraint of government officials, when that is very far from warranted.
