I just think there's a tiny hint of "Irish" left over in the "Canadian" accent.

Newfies sound like complete idiots, a lot of what the bumpkin types say is hard to understand, but most just sound silly.

"French" people here in Quebec sound like idiots most of the time as well, because they have all been taught their language so badly by other idiots who were taught it only slightly better.

Most foreigners from French speaking countries that live here (Algerians, Haitians etc) speak French far better than most Quebecois types. Also, a lot of english people I know speak french way better than any "quebecois" asshole.

In English, it's "cool" to not be eloquent when you're a teenager in High School. It's "cool" to not use "big" words and spell shit wrong because you don't want to seem like a nerd for knowing how to speak your own fucking language.

French here is much of the same, except it's not just the young people that sound like tools, they ALL sound like tools and think it's cool to pronounce shit wrong.

Fun fact: All Quebecois women that turn 50, cut their hair off, spike it and dye the spikes burgandy/red. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

I was just about to rip on you for being ignorant of french diachrony in Canada... but I see that you live in Montreal??? How can you say those things?? LOL Are you being sarcastic? What you're saying sounds harsh and quite ridiculous.

I agree that the Quebecois french is crazy different than indo-european french (aka "France" french) but I don't understand your negative connotations regarding the quebecois dialect.

When the french came over in the late 17th century, after about 100 years people stopped emigrating b/c it became known that "La Nouvelle France" wasn't the wonderful land people had envisioned. Ties were more or less cut off for a while with mainland france... therefore the language developed accordingly - independent of mainland french influence. I don't remember exactly what factors in North America influenced the language the way it did... but the environment in which it thrived changed it. That, in essence, is the basis of its difference from "france" french... it does not, by any means, imply lack of education or proper linguistic upbringing.

France itself has nuuuumerous dialects... ppl from Breton have a hard time understanding Parisians (roughly the highest WPM oral level in the world). The french in the region of Marseille is arguably incomprehensible to people who live in Tours (whose language has been officially stamped as "standard french")

Quebecois is just another one of these dialects. When my friend from France and I went to MTL he preferred ppl to speak to him in english b/c he couldn't understand the quebecois - I totally agree that it's vastly different. But like I said... there's nothing idiotic about it... it's pure linguistic diachrony (i.e. "change or development in a linguistic system over a period of time" )

What further complicates the linguistic climate in Quebec is that the french there developed as a system dislocated from its geographic origins.

For someone who seems to know a lot about languages, I'm surprised at the comment regarding Souther Canadian and Northern American (USA) English vs UK English.

It is widely agreed that we are the accentless ones and that the Brits are the ones WITH the accents. I know that sounds really retarded, but I'm actually not just pulling that out of my ass, I took a study of languages course in school and all kinds of crazy linguists agree with that. I'll dig up my book and give you the Author/Title.

And I suppose I was a bit harsh and silly. I was being way too general, and you're right.

So, sorry to those Quebecois that speak the language well. There are some that do, it's true.

But easily the VAST MAJORITY do not, and for the most part, especially amongst the under 50 generations here in Quebec, the reason they speak it so poorly is borderline INTENTIONAL which is why I was referring to them as idiots.
