The us and indeed the world is full of different dialects; variations on a common theme. Some of them bother me too... but I think it's a little unfair to think it has anything to do with 'speaking like an adult.'

(hell, I can't STAND british accents... but I'm not going to tell the next brit I talk to to "speak like an adult" to me. Different strokes for different folks.)

You do realise (sorry realize) that he's not British?

Of course I do. I wasn't trying to make a personal attack on him... I was just stating my opinion that happened to be a pertinent example.

Posted by Dervish on May-09-2008 00:22:

And how would you define a "British Accent"?

I can answer this since I am The Professional Token Gay.

I do not love God. The Rabbi cut off part of my penis, and my mother later explained that it's purpose was to "bring me closer to God." I made a pact to myself that I will never love God until I cut off part of GOD'S penis to see if it brings God closer to me.

I love Football. It's everything a gay guy would dream of: running, tackling, mud, and man-on-man foreplay.

First of all, I think that the older generation gays are "in your face" because to them, it was/is a civil and human rights issue. They were the kids getting the shit beat out of them and their lives threatened because they were gay.

Those are my 2 cents.

+1,000

EXACTLY!

There's also a lot of flaming in your face queers that are immigrants from Eastern Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Mexico where cultures can be more strict on being gay.

The now aging "1st generation full out" gays are not appealing to anyone, and there's not many of them left after the AIDS epidemic in the 80s. The younger gays (esp teens today) don't even look to older gays as role models. They look to straight people as role models, and end up fitting in society a lot better compared to 40 years ago.

Sorry, but its not the same thing. Accents are incorporated due to exposure of said accent from the moment a child is born.

That is completely different to the choice a gay man makes to speak like an idiot. Or give himself deliberately girly mannerisms. Just because youre gay doesn't mean you can't behave like a man. It's just an act. A fake, unattractive act. Ive known many mincing poofs who were awesome blokes and not the least bit camp.

Seriously...and don't even give me the excuse that they act that way because they're more feminine. Fucking women don't act like that.

Agreed. You win. Although don't forget until the early 70s "homosexuality" was considered a psychological illness and those people were treated as crazies.

but gay bashing isnt a systemic abuse at the behest of the state.

You'd be surprised how many people who "work for the system" let gay bashings and abuse towards homosexuals in general slide, especially in rural America.

quote:
again, the oppression or violence committed by private individuals isnt the same thing as legalised segeregation. its really not the state's fault if there are multitudes of redneck bastards willing to engage in gay bashing.

Legalized segregation includes ban on gay marriage (segregating gay people as "outsiders"). Even "civil unions" is segregation if the law cannot prove it to be equal to "marriage."

Overall you are right that is not AS bad for gays as it WAS for minorities 50 years ago. However, it is WORSE for gays than it IS for other minorities TODAY.

Ok, well I'm going to get eaten alive since I'm sure there are many discernable British dialects that I may be lumping into my general "British Accent" statment...

Let me rephrase... I cant stand 'received pronunciation.'

Posted by Dervish on May-09-2008 00:44:

Everyone hates that it's actually shit pronunciation. As a RP person to say drawing and they say "drawring".

I agree and disagree at the same time.

I agree in that I find this so COMPLETELY unattractive and in fact revolting. I'm literally vomiting in my mouth everytime I go to a gay bar and see how these people walk and talk. Why the fuck do they have to do this? They're at a gay bar and they are all gay so WHY take the necessary steps to still act fem as if no one would be able to tell you gay if you didn't act fem?

Outside of me finding fem gays completely sexually unattractive, I disagree with you in the sense that anybody has the right to act however they want. Just because you are a man it doesn't mean you have to act like a man. If you are gay (or straight) you CAN behave however you want. It's wrong in my eyes when I'm trying to get laid. But at the same time I feel that it's their right to act retarded.

pkcR., remember for every flaming queen out there, you'll find an equally unappealing overly masculine, crotch grabbing, womenizing, str8 talking (frequently using words like "bro," "brah," "tsup," "'at's coo'"), homophobic straight guy.

I have to say I agree with 99% of what you say Jake but at the same time if you're getting a lot of eye contact and "that look" then surely you can tell?

I can see how it would be annoying though. I wish women would wear badges when in clubs to say if they are attached or not lol.

Oh come on, you know all those backhanded smacks in the face and the odd knee to the groin you get from ladies, they are just playing hard to get.

I try to make that the only thing gay about me. If I find a guy attractive I look at him. Usually if he finds me attractive he looks back. The deal is sealed.

This would be the greatest invention ever.

What about actual "GayDar"? Like bluetooth "I'm gay and free to play" beacons?

Would be ace if girls(guys for you) had em (well maybe even a phone feature/app) would make thing easier!!! Maybe even preferences?

To be honest I'd misuse it though "ahhh the blonde likes art...*google 'how to bluff at art'*"
