in many cultures, the left hand is associated with cleaning one's ass after shitting, and the right was used to eat.

Toilet paper didn't always exist.

Are you one of those people that get up in arms when someone says "how you going?" as a greeting when they're not really asking the question? or when they say "see you later" when you know they won't?

What do you think you're doing with this? raging against the machine of social norms with your left hand? It's a pointless pathetic little argument about nothing. I understand that is what the internet is all about, so I say again, go plant a tree you moaning little bitch.

+1

i really don't care, i've just been filling my time on the internet arguing with non-conformist idiots

continue on, i need my wednesday filled, my flight doesn't leave until early thursday

System J...it's hilarious the way you're getting fired up.

We're not OPPRESSING lefties, and definitely not saying "we're right handed so EVERYONE should conform to us". It's just a matter of ease, the same way everyone drives on the same side of the road.

When I said I get offended when people shake left, I didn't mean all the time, I meant like if you're at a club and a right-hander has their drink in their right, so gives you that disrespectful "twist at the shoulder so the palm on the left hand is facing the same way it would on a right hand" handshake. Put your fucking drink down and shake properly, cock.

If I was in a work environment and a lefty tried to shake with the left (with their right hand free of other tasks), I'd be surprised, but wouldn't think they were strange or rude.

Still...limp wrist = I think less of you.

what the fuck is that supossed to mean? do what his told? that is a rule of etiquette.
by that logic we're eating with cutlery because we're told so, and if we don't want to be spineless fucks we should eat with our hands?
why do you say hello to your boss, or your teacher? it's not like their your friends, so what, are you a spineless fuck?

well played

that's where the ignorant came into it

it's just a simple rule of etiquette, good manners and common sense i guess are few traits found nowadays

continue on cretens

just don't be surprised when people get offended or refuse to take your hand when the situation doesn't warrant it

No. I don't give a shit about those things, and you're missing the point.

And so are you.

As I've said, I shake people's hands. I don't think the act of shaking a hand is spineless or wrong. So that's every single one of both of your analogies scratched off. What I'm annoyed at is when people somehow think less of you if you shake with your left, my natural hand. I'm performing an act of social etiquette, but because I'm ever so slightly deviant from what everyone is used to I'm being rude or disrespectful. I have to alter my natural hand for 90% of the world. When I make someone else do it, I'm being disrespectful.

People who get so self-righteous about others not rigidly obeying arbitrary conventions seriously need to pull that pole out of their ass. Christ, we were drawing parallels with obeying the traffic lights earlier in this thread, as if shaking a hand correctly is a matter of life and death. I'd have thought we'd stopped caring in the 21st Century.

So should visitors to foreign countries blatantly disregard their cultural idiosyncracies as well?

Great point. I dunno why, but when I read this I thought of a businessman visiting Japan..and upon meeting someone, doing a pelvic thrust instead of a bow.

Seriously lefties...suck it up. It's not like it takes much effort to shake with your right...the same hand 99% of the planet uses to shake hands with. I'm a lefty myself and can't imagine extending it when I meet someone. Of course it is perfectly possible to shake hands with the left...just as it's possible greet someone by bending backwards...just as it's possible to light the wrong end of a cigar and smoke it backwards. There's nothing stopping you from doing these things, but you can't expect people to accept it. They will think you are a weirdo for behaving this way and you will make a less than favorable impression, even if they don't say so to your face.

I don't really care. It doesn't bother me if foreign tourists ignore arbitrary social conventions when they visit my country.

If that was directed at me, it was a quote. The point is that people did crazy and irrelevant shit thousands of years ago. People used to cut you and drain you of blood when you were ill because of a batshit crazy theory that wasn't dispelled until William Harvey came along. If we followed every stupid custom and tradition because of its age we'd never progress as a society.

Likewise suck your own cock and it takes an equal amount of effort to shake with your left.

Actually only like 85% are right-handed.

quote:

That's because you are conditioned. Nothing wrong with that. But there's also nothing wrong with shaking with your left either.

quote:
Of course it is perfectly possible to shake hands with the left...just as it's possible greet someone by bending backwards...just as it's possible to light the wrong end of a cigar and smoke it backwards.

That's a fallacy argument. That's like saying "Most people step with their right foot first...just as it's possible to step with your left foot first...just as it's possible to walk backwards...just as it's possible to step with the wrong end of your foot."

.
.
.
So anyway, I thought of this thread when my right hand was full of groceries and I had no choice but to shake with my left. I said "I hope you aren't offended that I'm shaking with my left" as I shook his right with me left. He laughed. Apparently he wasn't an Arab or wasn't aware that I could have had a weapon in my hand. Good thing I narrowly escaped social embarrassment and possible death!

Do gay guys cuddle after sex? Or is that too "gay" even for gay guys?

Posted by spiflicated on May-15-2008 04:18:

i haven't posted in ages, but felt compelled to offer an opinion for whatever reason.

if your right hand is full of stuff and it's way too awkward to shake with your right hand, there's not really anything wrong with offering your left hand (but you might as well just nod your head and point to your right hand and not shake at all)

otherwise just extend your right hand because it's the right thing to do (pun intended) - unless you're Bob Dole, because no one wants to shake his withered right claw, and he's gotten away with left shakes for decades

No, but just because it's necessary to shake with your right hand in E. Europe and M. East doesn't mean that America has to jump the band wagon.

LOL what are you retarded? Of course I cuddle after sex, unless I just wanted to have sex and the guy wasn't hot enough for me to cuddle with afterwards. If I cuddle with him it means I like him and might have a 2nd date.
