Toronto knows how to party but it doesn't know shit when it comes to different varieties of music, and there I said it.

before you tell me to "unscrew my mind" you might have decided to read my post properly. I agreed that this was not MY IDEAL line up for a party...but that a lot of people don't realize what they've got in this city and how good we've got it musically. There have been great techno and house acts (not only at Guv but Footwork...Cherry Beach...) The trance acts have been coming... Yogi just came last week for the hard trance fans even....

Sure we could use some more variety at the Guv, but its not the only club in the city.

People can complain. That's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Not once did I say people needed to "Shut up" and listen to my opinion.

And YOUR opinion may be that people in Toronto "don't know shit when it comes to different varieties of music"....well...as I said...everyone has their own opinion...wether they be valid or not...

jesus. calm down and have a nice night.

there. i said it.

In fact someone has created such a thread and you are reading it right now. And after all it seems as you are the one who is whining here.

why does everyone complain about guv when there are other venues in toronto that bring in talent? if you dont like the djs that guv brings in then go to another venue. its not that hard to figure out. guv has already established their relationship with certain djs and agencies while other venues have theirs.

It's not about contracts, it's about clubs taking wise risks and bring new faces who have not played in Toronto for years.

Right, everyone has their own opinion, but there is no point of exchanging opinions when you already have decided that your opinion is valid.

Do you know this for fact? I'm sure (though I will not say for certain), that part of it does have to do with contracts, or at least building business relationships. And although not necessarily for huge parties, I find that Guv has recently starting to bring in a wider variety of names.

In terms of taking wise risks, they somewhat do have to stick to what they know will bring in money, as they are still a business. We've seen how clubs like Boa and Sonic eventually (I believe) do in part to the DJs they brought in. They took risks bringing in names that may not be as mainstream, but people in the scene knew who they were. Eventually, both of those clubs closed though.

I will admit though, that I have never worked in the entertainment industry, and thus my speculations as to risk taking and reasons for clubs closing could be completely off base.

Edit - One other thing. I'm lucky in that I've been able to come up to Toronto on a fairly frequent basis. However, I do spend a lot more time in Windsor than I used to. While Remo is doing a good thing with Boom Boom Room and bringing in some good DJs...Windsor has NOTHING compared to what you guys have in Toronto, nor do we have ANY variety. Detroit is no better. So while as EDM enthusiasts some Torontonians may think that the scene sucks, it's still a lot better than what most people have. And this is coming from someone who lives in a decent size city only a few hours away from Toronto.

Posted by spolitta on Jul-25-2008 23:09:

If DJ X has never been to Toronto then it's safe to say that he is not on any kind of contract with any clubs in our city. And honestly a large metropolitan area like ours deserves better parties than a city like Windsor, there is no question about that.

Posted by T_ALI on Jul-25-2008 23:09:

The Guvernment is only going to book DJs that are well-known through out the edm scene and can guarantee sales so they can profit from the event/s , I mean afterall it is a business.

There's so many DJs that I'd love to see such as Richard Durand or Mr Sam but I think it'll be years before they ever play in Toronto.

So many people take this city for granted and don't realize how lucky they are. If you go anywhere else in Canada besides Toronto and Montreal, you'll see that it sucks and wish you were back here; trust me, I've lived all over Canada and I know what I'm talking about.

I for one am very happy with the LOL 2008 lineup but like I said you can never please everyone.

The fact that you think that's how it should be really scares the hell out of me.

Durand is a yes, Mr.Sam is a BIG YES.

You're completely misreading what I'm saying.

1. I'm talking about DJs having contracts who are ALREADY coming to Toronto, and thus the club having to bring them back.

2. When in my post did I say that Windsor deserves better parties than Toronto?

Posted by T_ALI on Jul-25-2008 23:23:

I suppose the best thing u can do is stop waiting, save up some money, and go where the DJ u wanna see is playing i.e. U.S, Ibiza, Amsterdam etc.

You might even make some cash.

1. Most contract would indicate that the DJ cannot play in any other clubs of the same city. I have personally never heard of contracts where the club promises to bring the same DJ over and over unless the club was looking for some discounts.

2. No you got it wrong. What I I meant was that you shouldn't be comparing a small city like Windsor to GTA.

Traveling is the best, but I'm no different than most of you and only get 2 weeks of vacation per year. Once a year vacation plus WMC are all I get for now.

Easier said than done for someone like me, because making money is a bonus but I can't afford to loss.

Are you a booker or talent agent?

1. Like I said, I've never worked in the entertainment biz...so my contract thing was total speculation

2. All I was saying with the whole Windsor/Toronto thing, is that you should be lucky that you have anything period. And quite a variety of clubs to go to at that. Windsor is building up it's EDM scene, and Detroit has had one for awhile...but we don't have the variety of clubs to go that you have in Toronto. The Guvernment isn't the only bar to go to that plays EDM.

And like other people have said, if there's someone you want to bring in...do something about it. There's countless TOTA's alone that promote for all kinds of clubs in Toronto that have thrown parties. I'm sure if you talked to someone you could try to get a DJ you want to come and if your party is a success then you'd probably be able to do it again.

Neither, I'm a recording artist. Although I have been involved with booking a few local DJs. If someone has info on how international contracts work I would be happy to learn, because right now I don't see you two shedding any lights on this matter.

STEVE ANGELLO
SEBASTIAN INGROSSO

^^^ have only been to guv once before.

TOM NOVY
DEVLIN & DARKO

^^^ have never played Guv

as for the others... you gotta go with what will fill the club. it is a business afterall, and realistically you couldn't fill a place that massive with out some of the big tried and tested names.

Posted by activate on Jul-26-2008 00:42:

FFS... i hate it when people who don't know what they're talking about act like they do.

new flash people.. it's not that fucking easy to book DJs.. especially ones that are in demand.

You don't just call up an agent, say you wan't so and so and throw some money at them.. doesn't work like that.

you book based on who's touring where and when, and over and above that, and decent artist is going to be in demand all over the world. That means you'll be competing for them with other promoters/clubs around the world

listen whiny ... seriously tho..it gets frustrating to hear people complaining about this city and the guv....the place is not some grassroots non profit edm drop in..it's a business first and foremost...the owner needs to ensure that the experience is a pleasant one for the clientele...AND also make sure that there is some integrity involved when it comes to the bookings...i feel that as far as bookings go..the guv has some serious integrity..meaning that they pay top dollars for some top talent to make sure that the customer leaves happy...do you think AVB comes cheap.. or any of the others for that matter..

it's sad to hear people whining about a line up that consists of at least 5 stellar international dj's as well as countless local ones....not to mention the guv complex is pretty sweet venue...

Posted by dartrance on Jul-26-2008 01:11:

you guys are fucken whiners.

you got the #1 dj in the world doing a ARMIN ONLY Show. You got probably the biggest house dj in the world in term of popularity.

The guvernment will be so jammed.

Stop being so fuken spoiled. No other place in canada has the amount of good shows that you guys do.
