I went to China in February and it was $130 for a one year, multi-entry visa for an American passport (American passports are 50 dollars more than any others). Express services (2-3 mailing days) $35 and rush services (same day mailing service) are $50.

It's still the same prices....now they just require more proofs from your job, school and wherever you are going to stay. For example, when I went last summer I was never required to show a proof of kinship to my parents living there and an invitation from my parents but now I need a birth certificate signed by my father and proof they live there. I'm luckily able enough to have my grandmother apply on my behalf in ottawa and sent her $400 to cover any extra expenses she needed because God knows what fees the Chinese might pull out of their ass this week.

The venues look awesome.

It's on again tonight (6pm EST I believe on CBC), but i'm 99% sure that you'll be able to view on Demand on their website, or one of Rogers VOD channels like Channel 100...

That's what they had for the winter olympics in 2006. Most of the events could be viewed whenever you wanted to on Demand.

wow, I got goosebumps when China came out for the parade... sick.

Posted by harcourt on Aug-08-2008 15:54:

Nevermind, I see they're still going or were an hour ago? hahah NBC isn't even airing them right now, they're pretending the Ceremonies start tonight at 6PM EST. It was the regular NBC morning show this morning while the ceremonies were on.

hahahah

Yeah me too. Imagine how loud it was if you were actually there.

wow...amazing ceremony!

i liked those moving squares performance the most. i can only imagine how hard that was to do. the drums at the beginning were also cool. btw, that scroll on the ground, was that made out of LEDs or something of that sort? because that thing was wicked. i also thought the torch lighting was very original as well.

btw, those fireworks just made the air quality a lot worse lol.

Not possible.

I wonder how the Athletes themselves feel about the quality of the air that they have to compete under. Doubt many records will be broken because of the harsher conditions.

Posted by jon jon on Aug-08-2008 16:21:

haha imagine the vibe in that place, retarded

that was a wacky torch ceremony. very creative and gutsy to be hoisted like that and "run" around the stadium. no one knew what to expect

+1!

Amazing Ceremony! I only was able to watch the first part (up until the countries came out) and saw again when the lighting was happening and the guy 'ran' around the roof of the place to light the torch!

Hopefully I can watch this again later!

Anyway, who's ready for some Female Beach Volleyball?

Apparently there was controversy because the women's bathing suits were too revealing

Yes, we're all going to run to CoR, find the thread, and then find your post so we can find out what your opinion is.

I didn't watch it, and I have no plans to watch any portion of the Olympics this year.

It has nothing to do with the business of it, it's all about the site. China hosting the Olympics is a mockery to the spirit of the games. Their abhorrent human rights record, opressive regime and state-controlled media do nothing but tarnish what should be a celebration of global cooperation and sport. It seems unfair to support the games when there are so many people who can't watch it because they are hog-tied to an electrified bed frame.

If China wants to torture and kill people for no other reason than political activism, the're not funding it with my money.

Why didn't they just go out and hand it to Pyongyang and get it over with?

As unfair as it might be to the atheletes, who train their entire lives for this, I don't believe that any socially responsible nation should have fielded a team.

See you in 2012.

That's great, and I completely understand your reasoning, but its a little late to boycott now. The reason is because the people that are being affected by the boycott are the athletes and the hard workers of China who have been working their ass off for the past few years trying to put to Olympics together (The non-politically affiliated Chinamons )

Maybe the Olympics should have never been in China in the first place, but that's over and done with and nothing that can be controlled now.

It's all about supporting our athletes and standing by them while they try and prove that they are the best in world.

Even though I don't necessarily agree that China has the best policies in the world, i'm watching the Olympics to support my country.
If you don't want to support your country, then that's fine and maybe you don't have as much nationalistic pride as I do or others, but it's all about our athletes at this point.

The quality of air isn't exactly good there but the media is exaggerating it a bit much.
Keep in mind that August tends to be the hottest and most humid month in most parts of China so the air is almost stagnant with the lack of wind.
In a few weeks when the fall winds come, humidity clears and it cools down a bit the air is actually much clearer in Beijing and Shanghai
I go running in Shanghai everyday (which is a heck of a lot worse btw) and I have yet to have any breathing problems.
I agree that China needs to take more steps to clean up their air quality but I can't really see it affecting the athlete's performances that much...people go out and exercise outside in Beijing and Shanghai all the time!
Remember kiddies....the media loves to make a big deal out of things so you guys watch

How about that torch lighting? Man that was epic!

i was really suprised by what i read in a post on Spacing about public exercise equiptment. i think it's great that the government encourages exercise for everyone by providing some facilities.

It's a really neat concept...they have these little exercise machines that look like part of the playground.
Mostly older people use them but it's great for them as it's not too much stress on the muscles/bones.

I'm just watching the ceremony now on CBC...it started at 5am here so I only got to catch the end of it.
That scroll was awesome! I really liked the typewriter as well. The performances so far have been so precise and epic. I have a feeling this one might blow Athens out of the water
