All I've listened to in the past few months is uzic.ch's minimal stream.

On the flip side, I think the popularization of techno is doing great things to the scene in our city. Up until recently, it seemed the only parties large amounts of people would get excited for were parties that featured a small list of Radio 1 DJs or Dutch trance DJs. It made "big parties" seem rather homogeneous for the longest time. Now, we are getting big parties like the Time Festival on Saturday, which is breathing a much needed breath of fresh air into our scene. I think if Sunday goes off well, it could set an interesting new precedent for parties in Toronto.

Btw, I'm not trying to complain, nor am I trying to tell people the way things are. I'm just trying to generate discussion. Some of you people need to relax!

This is one of the best discussion threads I've read on TA in a while--great topic.

I'm with Highroller's original post--I've been saying this trend isn't my cup of tea for a while. Too much in the city though? Not sure. If that's what the people of Toronto want to hear, that's what they should hear. Then the trend will slowly shift in as the DJs guide the music into the next "big sound."

I haven't been going out to certain clubs or to hear certain DJs because I know they are on the minimal/tech-house kick. It'll be interesting to observe the trend on the Bound By Sound boat cruise tomorrow, with SO many of our locals booked to play.

Going out too much? Who said that? That's like saying "you're listening to too much house music" or "you're breathing too much air." For real though, it's not a bad point. If you're getting bored or annoyed with the music, probably a change of venue or even a break would be a good thing.

Personally? I would love for a tribal-trend come back. *dreamy sigh*

Is it though? When I think of tech house, I don't think of anything clearly definable either...and I certainly wouldn't group it with or confuse it with minimal. Tech house is a term that gets (mis)thrown around a lot as well these days, imo. Seems like any track that has any shred of "techy" elements is labelled as tech house...when I think tech house is more about vibe than structure. There's just so much more to it than it sounding "techy"...and ffs how long is the list of what makes something techy??? Blargh!

All that aside, if it isn't too much of one thing, it's too much of another. If people were less concerned with the next big thing and more concerned with truly appreciating and understanding what's going on RIGHT NOW (and just good MUSIC in general, none of this genre-whore shit), there'd be a lot less of these one-trend bastardization bandwagons rolling through town.

What Toronto has, Techno-wise is too much of one style of music - there's little to no place for sounds and styles of playing that veer to one side or the other of what most of the "popular" d.j.s (meaning, there are tons of "popular" Techno d.j.s out there, the majority of which rarely or never set foot on North American soil) are playing these days. And it does happen with every genre - North American Jazz went through a big-band phase, then guys like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker broke away from that and shook things up, then Free Jazz followed and was openly criticized by Davis - talk about a merry-go-round. Of course, all the while the Europeans were lapping it *all* up, just like they are today.

What I hear in most of these 'minimal' Techno sets are too much of the same sounds, both being played out by too many d.j.s and in the actual sets themselves. There's an extended, grainy, ascending whooshing sweep that seems to qualify as *the* signature buildup in so many tracks that I hear - after hearing a however subtle variation of the same sound several times over in the same set, it has the tendency to lose its desired effect, that of building anticipation. Without that, what are you left with? I've only heard a handful of d.j.s who can consistently pull off uniquely interesting minimal sets, the rest of it simply comes off as mediocre bandwagoning.

I believe the classic minimal and harder sounds will become popular in Toronto again, but only when people in clubland start becoming exposed to, and appreciating it - just as all sub-genres of Jazz eventually found their place in North American popular culture and history (and even if it still gets TONS more love overseas). There's an entire generation of clubbers who were never exposed to the likes of Claude Young, Cari Lekebusch, Dez, Twonz or Murat when they used to roll through town and lay waste to 1000+ people at a time, and there's been little to fill the void since. I'm looking forward to seeing that change.

sometimes reading the drama that goes on here on TA and other msg boards, I thank my lucky stars that I can find a place in my heart for a variety of genres (hate that word).

The line between minimal, tech-house and techno is getting finer day by day and I for one will be the first to admit that I probably mistake one for the other repeatedly. Kudos to those who can make that difference. What it all comes down to in the end is that music is different to all of us. We define our own genres and it shows our passion for it when we spend hours on a computer trying to convince others that our "point of view" is the right one.
