I do not think the technology itself is what annoyed purists as much as the fact that it can be a hard pill to swallow when they spend a few hundred dollars a month on tracks, a few grand on gear while some asshole hack with little to no effort strings a bunch of pirated mp3's together on pirated software and decides to call themself a dj.
you can usually spot them by the dj in front of their screen name.
pretty sad imo.

What exactly do you think is running on that laptop

Did they? Or was it the labels still releasing promo's on vinyl that kept the plate scene alive a bit longer than other genre's that dropped that format in favour of CDs a long time ago?
Its interesting to see the techno djs embracing the technology and actually pushing the format to the current max... not to say they're doing that entirely, but this vid from Hawtin, certainly opened my eyes to the format as well.
As per any modern day success story, either you have a big gimmick like wearing a giant goldfish bowl painted as a mouse-head... or you have a particularly goofy set-up/presentation that makes you famous.
In 'Scratch' techno djs clearly got what they wanted out of new technology - - in that it had the feel and old-school approach to mixing still with some vinyl influence. Going fully digital is another step, but perhaps after experimenting with the software, they've realised like Hawtin here, that it allows for a totally new approach for their livesets, and guys like that, at the top of the game are ALWAYS about pushing new boundaries, no matter what format they're using to push with.

Right, but Clovis mentioned techno DJ's in particular, and I was wondering as to why the aesthetics of wax and convenience of digital files were somehow more of priority with those playing techno than other genres.
Anyway, Chris Fortier is one of the major jocks still running with an almost entirely vinyl set-up. |
Because most of them don't want to lose the operation of a turntable. It's not because it's more important for that genre, that is just the trend I have seen. With Traktor scratch out now, everyone seems to like it and more people are jumping on board the control vinyls + laptop setup.

What are the differences between Traktor and Serato? Any?

i never said it wasn't ableton... most of the time it was that, or cddjs. i see primarily trance djs but do see the likes of carl cox, sasha, digweed, and others and i personally have never seen any trance dj (outside of pvd as i mentioned before) or the others mentioned use control vinyl/cd. i've personally only seen them use cddjs, vinyl, or ableton.
personally i was really excited when serato came out. for me it dramatically reduced my spending on vinyl and allowed me to instantly get the gratification of downloading an mp3 from beatport, etc and immediately be able to play it through my setup. no longer did i need to place the order, make payment, and wait for shipping and hope the records weren't damaged.
i still love vinyl though and still collect a few records here and there. i think the likes of serato, traktor, live, etc have made djing more interesting too, as demonstrated by hawtin.

Well yeah, if you only see those DJs, I can see why you'd get the impression..
I could give a fuck less about any of the names you mentioned...

Good for you. Really, we all care Clovis.
As an aside, I thought you loved Sasha?
Posted by elFreak on Sep-05-2008 21:04:
he used to love dj sammy too, but he grew out of it like normal people.

I did until he decided to get lazy. I still respect him, but I don't care for anything he does anymore. Mostly the same with Digweed. They're big room DJs who play big room music fairly well, but that isn't difficult.

Traktor 3 has 4 deck capability whereas I don't believe Serato does (could be wrong). The meat of Traktor is in it's soundcard, totally trumps Serato's in sound quality. Traktor is a bit more of a memory hog though, I've had issues with skipping during tracks...luckily it has yet to happen at a gig

I can recall an article/interview with Digweed in 'Computer Music -Digital DJ Special' magazine back from 2006. It quoted him as saying that he doesn't think vinyl will last another year.
Not only was he wrong, I'm really surprised that it has taken him this long to embrace digital/software based DJing considering that article.

I think the problem is a lot of the time when I'm just playing at home or recording a set (I did the one for your show btw, but it was skipping, v2 tonight
) I'm usually on MSN with Firefox open refreshing shit and downloading porn.

Likewise. The only time I have problems with Traktor skipping/stalling is when the computer is online. I just turn off my wireless switch and problem solved.
