This was my favorite era of techno - that was when I was just discovering it and buying a shit tonne of records. There are so many good tracks in this mix.

I wonder how many of these were actually white labels (vinyl) that he was playing.. Now when DJs play promos they aren't called white labels, it just says (unreleased), I assume because they're digital. RIP white labels

Aren't they also called "CD-R" sometimes?

Yeah, I guess. That's just a type of CD but I assume that's what is meant. (Unless people actually distinguish whether each track was played digitally or otherwise)

white labels still exist.

Disagree.

This guy is an innovator, i will give him that. but his music lacks emotion and melody, which is why he will never have the same appeal some other legendary dj's out there.

Posted by pmoisse on Sep-20-2008 22:02:

My favourite set of his has always been (and probably will always be) Live @ L'Enfer (from 2000 or 2001 - pretty sure it's 2001)

It's 3 hours of bangers mixed with some trippy minimal goodness and has been in my rotation for 6 years now.

You can't come in here and post that without a link...

mass appeal =/= quality

his RA podcast 100 was really the shittiest set ever though.

Never heard of him.

Posted by kaniz on Sep-21-2008 18:08:

I liked his RA podcast actually. The first 10 mins or so where meh, but when it got going I rather enjoyed it.

I like the cold / clinical / technical approach of Hawtin. Dunno, the 'lacking of emotion' is part of the appeal to me. Then again, I love Sleeparchive and think he's amazing. Seems more logical than emotional, and that's something I can relate to more so than pretty melodies.

Not saying one is better than the other, just a matter of preference.

This is pretty much the faultiest part of your post. The rest follows naturally from that assumption, which I don't think is true at all.

Pretty mighty, eh?

I had this set for at least 2 years before I actually saw him play live (Turbo with Sven - kind of a crap set in my mind from what I can remember), and it set the bar so high that my expectations haven't fully been met by him because of it. I liked his Mysteryland 2006 (I think it's 2006) set as well which is nice and trippy with lots of rolling basslines. His best live set for me was Piknik Electronik with Ricardo in Montreal a few years back.

When he goes too experimental or minimal he starts to lose my interest.
