Here is an awesome example of our capacity to take the piss out of ourselves:

THE SHITTISH ISLES:

http://www.viz.co.uk/archive/shittish/largemap.htm

Newcastle has rat-boy, and Middlesborough is just a cloud of smoke. They've got the hanging monkey for Hartlepool, and Wales has a sheepshagger. Every single stereotype is covered here

I am an American. Born here, raised here, yadda yadda yadda. Maybe I'm the minority here, (here being America) but I actually think that the US is headed downhill. I'm not saying that its not a good place to live; I like my rights of free speech, and free trips to the salad bar

This country is great at passing the buck. Blaming someone else for your own mistake. Hell, its happened to me twice already today (I'm at work). Most Americans are too narrow-minded (or maybe short-sighted) to see that the cause of all of the woes is not from outside sources. But its much easier to blame someone else, than to take responsibility for your actions.

Are we lazy? Probably. Does that make us bad people? Probably not. I don't even understand why Tiesto14 got all mad at coops joke anyway. I thought it was funny.

But those are just my random thoughts. If they make sense, someone let me know. I'm just typing before my boss walks back to his cubicle, which is next to mine.

BTW
I don't get that map joke, but I guess its cuz I'm not from Britain
LOL

Peace

@ renegade:
Good post !
It is indeed the "tone that makes the music" (I strongly hope my tranlsation of that german phrase can be understood?). It says more or less, that in most of the cases it's not WHAT u say but HOW u say it. Saying "I think the unbalanced US polics in the middle east might provoce some anger" is on thing but saying "they dont need to wonder if all arabs hate them, when the support Israeli aggression" is another thing... They way the critic articulates reflects his motives and intentions of criticism. Does he merely want to "bash" or give productive and honest suggestions ?

One more thing about why America is nowadays the most powerfull and richest country in the world..I think it also has to do with their multiculuralism. Melting pots like NY or LA create great ides. The exchange of sifferent cultures and mentalities is mutually enriching and very productive. The way how the USA seek for sutdents from all over the world is the key for their success. Super brains from all over the world can after all develop nice things

Europe's critisim is still very often hipocrytical. On the one hand we benfit from the USA (politcally economically and so on) on the other hand we condemn the acts undertaken by the USA to grant us this kid of life. Maybe that has to do with the different mentalities. I think Americans are more idealistic, they seek for constant improvement, while we Ewuropeans lean back and discuss each other to death.

you are MORE anti-American because of the way Bush handled it????.....would u rather of Bush just sat back and watched as these terrorists bomb all they want and kill whoever they want....thats absurd...no leader would...

so beause the ahte us for there reasons that gives them the right to fly planes into are office buildings and leave over 4,000 children without parents??

Posted by Swamper on May-29-2002 14:54:

I'll just say this...

"Four Canadians have been killed and eight injured in a friendly fire accident in Afghanistan. A U.S. jet bombed the troops during a training mission south of Kandahar"

...when that happened it was barely mentioned on CNN or other American major news networks. Now, imagine if the reverse happened? That thing would be analyzed by the media for weeks with every expert called in to say their $0.02

If you have satellite and can grab European news feeds you'll have a better idea of what's going on in the world than if you stick to the stuff that gets broadcast on North American TV.

Tiesto14, why do you feel so victimised, theres all sorts of abusing crap being flung around these boards, just because once in a while it has something to do with america you thinks it becomes more important? well there your answer why people mock you in the first place!

and another thing, im sure some people may have lost love ones in sept 11th, but lets get one thing straight, you all (or most) seem to of acted like your country has been carpet bombed with nukes! millions of people die from starvation etc in other countries but because it doesnt affect your country i doubt you even notice! people joke about other things like ceratin causes of death, i dunno take aids or scucide for example for example, you may joke baout them but how do you not know TAs have lost love ones to that? you can have one set of rules for urself and another set for everyone else!

You are right other countries do go through terribel things...and i have noticed....

but NOONE would ever conceive of making fun of a a country who has starving children...why..well because its low-class and just cruel...

BUT you on the other hand went out fo your way to mock the attacks...i am sorry but i take great offense to that because i PERSONALLY have lost loved ones due to those attacks....and you continue to make light of it...you are very rude and obnoxious...you have zero respect for me or anyone who was affected by those attacks and all the lost lives on that day...

dude if u know ur history..u will know that the brits promised the land to both the muslims and the jews to help it in world war I and so when they did..they bith moved to the land at the same time and the problems started..Second i dont get the bashing by the brits..is it just me or arent the brits the first people that expressed their condolences to the us after sept11 and were the first to attack afghanistan along with the us...is it just suckin up to the big dogg?
is it just double standard?

i am an egyptian that lives in the U.S...making jokes about sept 11 is no funny buisness...dont give me the bullshit about millions of people die in third world countries so whats the big deal about sept 11..well first of all unless u have been to those countries or are from them then shut up cause u dont know what its like to go to a cafe and find a 5yr old kid takin ur order at 2 am...if one soul gets killed then its not a laughing matter so how about 6 thousand that didnt see it coming..it is unacceptable to make fun of this situation...now u wanna make fun of the us goverment no harm is done in that..as u rnt hurting anyone's feelings..infact i will join u in the laughs..i dont understand the bond between the us israel..whats the deal? if they werent one sided this problem would have ended but they keep backing up israel and thats why arabs are fueled with hatred to the us..israel has been such a pain to all the arabs sicne its creation..more than 6000 people died for sure because of israel..

The attack on afghanistan was plain stupid..i mean terrorism was around for ages in afghanistan..if ben laden was hiding in another country no one would have given a fuck about afghanistan..

Conclusion:America is a great country and not lazy at all..all u people are using american made microsft windows to bash the usa lol..
It is a great country that contributed alot economic wise but makes stupid ass descisions political wise..so wanna bash go ahead bash those political descisions but not everything about america needs to be bashed..Question? Do europeans have a double standard?

Posted by Yoepus on May-29-2002 15:51:

A few argument points I don't understand you euros making.

Such as the argument of:

1) Sept 11th is not important because other people in the world are suffering too. Like nature is killing off millions of people in africa and stuff, so you should be nuking nature now too.

2) We're not laughing at you, were laughing with you.

well my reply;

1: If everyone in the world would take care of their own interest we would be much better off. If the USA would go to work on terrorist, and the Africans on their aids, and the Europeans on the pro-Arab support, and Austrilia on devoting peacekeepers in East Timor and Fiji, then the world would be much better.

However you don't. Europe goes to the US and asks them to be pro-Arab, Africa comes to the US and ask them to cure Aids, Austrilia comes to the US to ask them for peacekeepers.

I mean, for gods sake people, you are saying the USA is not all that, but then your government go on their hands and knees and beg the USA to do something about something. What, are you guys so helpess and powerless to solve problems on your own?

I mean look at Kyoto. You wanted the USA to sign the protocol (which I don't think was bad, the bad part was not offering another plan). Ok so the USA didn't sign it. Why do you guys need the USA? Go organize the protocol and sign it yourselfs! Why didn't you? Because your governments discovered the protocol is not all that and the Americans were right.. it was a pretty dumb plan, we need better.

The problem in this world is accountability. Just like Sept 11th is placed on the heads of responsability of the US government on how they 'greedly' tried to have a steady supply of oil (which may I say Arab oil greatly benifit your Euros much more it did then the gass-guzzling yanks). When in fact it should have been placed on the heads of state of the dictatorships of Arabia. Why are you Euros so blind to this type of thing? You guys had just as much a part in Arabia, even more influence and backstabbing and double playing, then the Americans did.. but where you bombed? No. America is an easy scapegoat, just like Israel. - If we blame both of these countries all the problems will be solved.

Well it doesn't work like that. I understand there is a lot of valid critism. But why do you go on saying Bush is dumb in "everything" he does because he does dumb things in one field or two. Sure not being an environmentalist is dumb. And sure he might be a greedy capatilist pig, but what the hell is wrong with the war effort?? If something is wrong it seems to me that he is to weak and not strong enough.

But the Euros go on and on about how bad the war is because Bush is president.. ?? huh??

But the USA is doing its thing and helping the rest of the world for it, its even getting back at nature for all the wrongs it is doing to people in Africa and stuff. Just wait a few years and nature should be gone! Then you'll thank the Americans, won't you?

2: ya right, this is what the Palestinians said, after they were celebrating in the streets for Sept 11th.

Yoepus

You're so fat, when cars swerve to avoid you in the street they run out of petrol.

Well.... kinda. My parents are English, all my relatives are English and I used to live and go to school there, but I still consider myself Australian. So, erm yeah. Glad we could get that sorted out then.

And yeah, I was just shit-stirring with my last post. I tend to do things like that.

its alright tiesto14..i see alot of people making intelligent arguments but Dumonde Trancer's arguments are made of bullshit..he thinks he is funny and he is usually is in other threads..but in this one he is just sittin around intelligent people not knowing anything to say so just laughing and trying to be funny to contribute. thats a shame though..oh wait he will come and tell u millions die in other countries i forget that line thet he memorized as his argument oh well..he probably never helped out in charities or never been to a third world country..so make jokes dumonde if thats ur way of contributuion in an intelligent conversation.

the whole mess being WW2..? lol.. i seriously dont get u here

what i meant is that the whole US interferance is un-needed and all it does is rile up the palestinians etc etc.. if anyone should be mediating that argument it should be a neutral country with NO BIAS WHATSOEVER to any particular side.

in response to swamper's post: he has a serious point. although the US is labelled the land of the free, it has probably the most controlled television out of all of the G7 nations.. although on the outside it looks like its all politically open (having big rooms full of journalists receiving press releases etc) on the inside its very controlled. the way the british media has been handled over the last 50 years has been less publically open, but more control for the journalists. when the government want tomake a public announcement type thing they have a set few journalists (20 or so) in secret in a room that they give the information to, they are then free to blast the spokesperson with questions about everything and it can all get very heated. this wasnt common knowledge until a few months ago no-ne knew about it.. now the british government are wanting to have the more american approach to it, and the media is refusing because they know that it will mean more control over media.

tiesto14: yes the rage between pakistan and india has been going on for years, but can u sit there with a straight face and tell me that the events that have happened after sept 11th havent had any effect..?

if you ask anyone thats not american you will find out that the way bush has handled this whole thing has been a bit pointless. what have they gained..? nothing but misery for people who really dont need it i.e. the afghan people. have they got bin laden..? no. and they never wont because he probably never was in afghanistan anyway. the taliban took them on a wild goose chase and they fell for it.

and ste is not rude or obnoxious. he's just winding you up and u are rising to it. he is however speaking truth. europeans in general try to look on the bright side of things.. he was never mocking the attacks.. no-one in their right minds would ever do that because it was a terrible tradgedy.

im not flaming here, but to me it seems you take everything thats said about america or americans and think its directly aimed at you. its not. its aimed at your government and the nation generally. if someone said they thought tony blair was a cock-head, i wouldnt care. i would point out that he might be a cock-head but he's definatly the best leader we've had in office for 30 odd years. if someone said that our laws were shite i wouldnt act as if you were talking about my own thoughts and principles

Posted by tranceaholic on May-29-2002 16:18:

i agree with ya tu-face..the attack on the us goverment is ok no probs in that...read my post and u will know what is meant by brits starting the problem.i try to explain to everyone that afghanistan had nothing to do with sept11 ben laden isnt related to taliban he doesnt give a fuck about afghanistan..so the attack was useless..

yes, we were the first to offer our condolences. that is because we are plain friendly ffs it was a tradgedy.. you think we wouldnt have offered our condolences..? dont be silly like it or not the UK and the US are internationally best friends. we were the first to offer the US our support. im not disputing that fact. what i am disputing is the way the US has done things. if we didnt do them with you it would only create a riff that isnt needed under the circumstances.. we think before we act.. the US acts before it thinks. THAT part is common knowledge throughout the world (except in the US)

there is no double standards here, im not the one driving the planes over..

ARE U KIDDING MEEEEEE!!!!!!......the Afghan people have gained the most out of this entire situation...the children are allowed to got o school, the women are nolonger tortured...people have a say now.....

Did you know that the Taliban sometimes has their womens clitoris' removed so that they would not have desire for other men?...or that they would be beaten if they spoke out of order..maybe even killed...

The children of Afghanistan are now able to go to school and wear better cloths because of the U.S. efforts..we have sent millions in school supplies and clothing and even proffesors with strong Afghanistan backgrounds over there inordeer to teach the Afghanistan teachers proper skills, such as math and science...so that the children can learn and prosper...

this was NEVER allowed with the Tailban...children did not go to school...

so you are very much mistaken that the Afghan people have suffered more then they have gained...even the Afghanistan people are happy with the ridding of the Taliban...
