Alrighty then. Well my personal favorite is the Monte Lomas '05 Malbec. It drinks like a $35 and costs half of that, depending on where you shop. I stocked up around 8 bottle because I keep hearing they're gonna boost up to at least $25 after the new year.

I don't reall drink whites, and when I do I enjoy a good Sauv. blanc. California has some great one's for under $15 to just have around during the summer, or with fish/seafood.

Bogle makes good, moderately priced, Petit Syrahs. The name is a bit misleading because from my experience they are big and flavorful wines, probably my favorite for the cold weather/winter season we're getting into.

As you can tell I hardly spend more than $20 on wine. Not that I haven't done it before, but at the rate I go through them at my place it's hardly worth it. Usually will go through 2-5 bottles a week, depending on what's going on. Most of my friends know that when they come over a good "gift" is to just bring a bottle of wine. Instead of flowers, as is customary, after my performances I usually get wine as a congratulations.

On any random night there's anywhere between 25-35 bottles at my place, half of them won't be touched for the next 5-7 years. Most of them are $40+ per as it is - hence why if I buy anything to drink right away it's cheap.

you should not spend a lot anyway if it is just to drink. There are tons of decent table wines out there that will not hurt your budget.

Spending a little more on a bottle is more for gifts/hosting and when you really are trying to match flavors to specific dishes.

when it comes to drinking "cheap" wines i will just go jacob's creek and yellowtail. They go down good and i can drink 3 bottles for around 30$

What is so special about old wines? Why is an unopened wine bottle from 1950 so special?

yellowtail is what i open when my crackhead friends come over @6:30 AM after a night of DJing the only, and gayest, afterhours club in Baltimore. nothing like cocaine and yellowtail to welcome the sun in proper.

because it is rare.

a rare wine does not have to be from 1950 to be expensive. It can be a very risky investment as well, because sometimes you can end up with 200$ vinegar.

i usually buy a case from costco and keep it handy. I don't drink beer anymore and it is also good when you have guests that are not worthy of anything over 10 bucks.

YesS I IV it in winter, I don't have heat.

It's not misleading, the varietal is much smaller, thicker skinned than most. Thicker skin = tannin = pucker, robust, big, etc.

I'd love to build a small collection of 25-30. Any racks/coolers you suggest?

you can get it cheaper than that price though, especially used.

racvin also makes nice ones but i do not know if they ship to where you are.

That's why most old wine is usually only worth it if it is from well respected vineyard; Mouton Rothschild, Petrus, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, as they have a reputation for producing better wine. Less chance of getting an old duffer.

i suggest getting a dual zone cooler. it's better to keep the ones you're gonna age at a cooler temp and just in general not disturb them by moving the rack and letting sunlight in etc.

the ones you will drink fairly soon can be kept above at a much more drinkable temp so you can just take them out whenever and open right away.

it's pretty decent actually. and i got it for free so i'm not complaining. i'm sure there's better ones out there but it's doing the job i need it to.

i prefer reds.. lately i've been drinking kellys revenge

which has unfortunately is being discontinued where i live so i have to find some other glug.

unless you are the biggest snob in the world, this is the best, cheapest wine deal. tastes great, very little headache if you have too much...

Any wine discussion quick reveals how much people's self worth is attached to a particular brand of wine. When it comes to tasting most ppl can't tell the difference between $6 vs $14 bottle of wine. The label/marketing/price has the biggest impact on the person's opinion of the wine. Don't believe me try pouring an expensive wine into a cheapo bottle see what reaction you get.

This was the point I was trying to make on the first page. At the very cheap end there are quite a lot of fillers and it tastes horrible. Once you get above a certain threshold, maybe even a low level like $8/bottle then it is more difficult to tell.

I tend to disagree, when i go to a bar and ask for a glass wine, i can tell instantly they have given me some cheap wine because it tastes like shit

And I can relate to gehzumteufel, I can tell with vodka as well. Having a $10 headache from two servings a $4 (plastic) bottle of vodka (bought at this classy joint where they also sold petrol for some reason) teaches you stuff


Personally, I wouldn't say I'm a wine expert, but I know when something tastes like shit. I usually go with Italian reds (Montepulciano d'Ambruzzo) because they generally aren't too heavy and woody.

I'm more of a hard liquor guy, though.
