that only goes to show that constant breakdowns = constant breakups.

i am a virgin. beats make me wanna fuck.
I will however, admit to a somewhat irrational double standard - I'd expect them to put up with me playing my music in my house/car/apt (within reason - as I know some stuff I like simply isn't palatable to most people), but will have little tolerance for listening to their stuff if it falls into the "Genres of which I cant stand"
:P
However, there is loads of music that I might not like - I don't necessarily dislike/hate - punk, alternative, blues, some other genres of EDM that fall outside of my "favorites".
But, there are a few genres/artists which I really cant stand and really aggravate me when I listen to them - and beyond "I just dont like it", but /really/ really really bother me and make me stressed out/anxious if I'm subjected to it for too long.
{edit} fuck, too slow on the draw
I think there is some conflicting information here though between two things.
The initial quesion asked if you could date someone who has different taste in music, though a lot of responses are in regards to 'the scene'
I think I would prefer dating someone who wasn't in 'the scene' but enjoyed the music at the same time. That would be ideal, although you never know. It depends on the person.
All I listen to is house music, I just don't have any time to listen to anything else. Becasue I'm constantly picking up new tracks 2-3 times a week, I need to listne to them to pick out the one's I'll play.....and learn those ones. So unfortunately it's all house 24/7...
So when I met me current gf she was bombarded with house 24/7 as well. At first she wasn't into it but as she listened to it grew on her. Now she LOVES house and is so glad that world was opened up to her...
(although I did get her an iPod so she can have a break in the car when needed)

Originally posted by Adamo I once took out a girl on a date and things were going well until we got back in the car to drive her home. I was playing a house music mix CD and after 2 minutes she turned the radio off. I said to her "oh u want me to turn it down? okay"...i turn it back on at a lighter volume...then she replies " no man turn it off i can't listen to that shit"...My reaction was "oh yeah...whats better..." then she turns on the radio and starts blasting raggaeton for fucks sake. I laughed and put on back the house music and said something along the lines of "my car, my music,"...this started a 10 minute war of her turning the music off...and me turning it back on. Dropped her off home never spoke to that bitch again... I can deal with someone who has different tastes but if you wont let me enjoy what I like then you can fuck right the hell off.
Common interests are nice, but in the long term, individual interests are more important. 3-hour conversations about tracks and DJs are about as interesting as 3-hour conversations about modern art or the weather.
It is important to agree on the significance of things like this; otherwise you end up with one person bitching all the time and the other person accumulating resentment.
i dunno...i haven't come across this issue yet. so far, so good!
i like a variety of music, so it wouldn't be a "you must like what i like" issue cos i don't enjoy just one genre. however, the stuff i love the most would have to be tolerated cos i listen to it for the majority of my day. i think more important would be someone who is passionate about music, whatever that may be. although i admit that i am a music snob, so i'd probably have to draw the line at some stuff (ie: trance)!
it would be nice if they liked EXACTLY what i liked. i'm not gonna deny that would be pretty awesome, but there are some more important things than what you listen to...like how hot you are (i'm kidding, i'm kidding!) i don't think it would be a dealbreaker for me.

Originally posted by kaniz It's nice to have a big enough over-lap that there is a big pool of stuff that you both like before knowing each other - but still different enough that you get to expose each other to new music. me and my partner both really like allot of the same stuff - but I tend to gravitate more towards the colder / synthetic sounds like Hawtin/Plastikman, Sleeparchive, Seph, Monolake or the chuggier stuff like Tony Rohr (came into techno via psytrance - so still got a softspot for rolling basslines and a harder edge), he's more into stuff like Ricardo, Cadenza records, bit more on the housier and mellow side than myself. But, I still like most of his stuff, and he still likes most of my stuff - but our "favorites" are kind of on the opposite ends of the spectrum, but still highly compatible, like a Richie vs Ricardo set

Originally posted by Mortyman +1 My gf doesn't like trance... and she seems to bring it up quite frequently, which pisses me off because she knows how passionate I am towards it. However, she really likes House (and other types of music), and it's one of those things that she's never really had anyone to talk about music so in depth with before that it's starting to change her perception a bit on trance itself. One thing I've learnt is that no matter how much you think music runs your life... the "right" partner will always run it more

Originally posted by sticky_shoes I tried this as well, and well, the bf didn't want to go to an EDM event. I guess it depends on the person, but I was tolerant to respect his decision. If you're not as tolerant as me, and this happens, then I guess she's not the one for you.

of course you can date someone with different musical taste than you. do you honestly think that you will be clubbing for the rest of your life? that you are going to be that guy/girl? it's part of maturing in a relationship, respecting and accommodating each other's differences (within reason, obviously).
on that note, me and my bf met through mutual taste in this music; however, clubbing is the absolute last thing we want to do when we spend time together - so there is something to be said for accommodating someone's taste in music vs. accommodating someone's lifestyle/involvement in the 'scene'
