Nuh-uh, Descent 3 FTW, kthxbye.

(Admittedly, it's not a DOS game...)

OMG!! Yeah man, definitely:

It was released in 1999. Wow, that's so long ago yet the game doesn't seem that old. It looks good even by today's standards (if you ask me).

IGN Review for Descent 3

There are three different ships each with their strengths & weaknesses, new weapons (mass driver is arguably the coolest though plasma is always my favourite in all the Descent games), very scary bosses, and even outdoor maps:

If you like Descent 1 and 2 but haven't played Descent 3, you should give it a try! You won't regret it! Also, do try the online multiplayer (though I don't know if there are any servers with people playing these days -- I'm sure there must be still). It's incredibly fun and fast-paced, and an excellent way to sharpen your flying skills.

EDIT: I'm sorry to everyone for posting pictures of a non-DOS game in a DOS thread!

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know! I was a huge Descent fan (I shouldn't say was, I still am!) so knowing that the series continued is just plain awesome. And I'll have to +1 the comment on the graphics being good even by today's standards. Friggin spectacular. Dos game or not, this is a I-must-play-now game in my book.

If I'm thinking of the right game, this educated me better than my teachers. Good times.

Sorry, didn't notice this post for some reason! Freespace (and its sequel, I believe) was indeed made by the same people who made Descent, and took place in the same universe, but it's a different kind of game. I never played it, but recall reading about it. It's more of a space strategy-type of game rather than 1st-person 3D "shooter".

I played this game in different forms: Gorilla (not sure if that's the right title... it ran in QBasic and two gorillas threw exploding bananas at each other), and "Artillery Duel" for Commodore 64... my personal favorite version of this game.
