Like sljiva said the list of electronic artists and genres they've impacted is far greater than that of PSB. They've even influenced Pet Shop Boys! Neil Tennant once said that he wished he could've made Violator.

That being said I like PSB personally and there's no doubt they've done things for electronic music but not on the scope DM or New Order. Id say they've influenced pop music more than anything

I just was wondering how far they would be behind, since probably no-one here would even think of putting them at the list at all.
Meanwhile I found a list 1-200 and surprisingly Pet Shop Boys are in it at number 25 just behind PvD and way in front of Vangelis (51), who I would believed would rank higher.
This is a list and I don't claim it to be THE list, but it is a nice list to discuss.

(And Aphex Twin ranks 8th)

Posted by amit on Feb-22-2009 17:19:

well the greatest musician ever has to be a person you brought you into the scene!!!! because it was his/hers magicial sound that created your interest in the first place

for me it was paul oakenfold, atb back in like 97...i didnt know what it sounded it like...when ur in like middle school u dont know shit!!!

hmmm if u want to go way back...then it has to be the guy that made the music for streets rage 1,2,and 3...especially 2. or that early poppy dance music of the late 80's i dont know...but it got me hooked...

as far as sayin whos the greatest of all time by skill then thats a tough one, because people taste changes all the time.

This is a good list, I agree with the great part of it. But it's also made by just one person, so of course it's quite subjective and not everybody will agree with the choices. For me, Moby, Paul Van Dyk and Pet Shop Boys shouldn't be on the list and Marshall Jefferson or Farley Jackmaster Funk should be there (they were definitely more important for house music than Larry Heard). In the end I think we cannot universally agree on top 25, but we can all agree that Kraftwerk was the most important electronic music band ever.

Definitely.

I was listening to Computer World recently. A lot of old records are influential, but I've never heard one that sounded so influential. You could hear a hundred subsequent tracks in every minute of music.

If you want to get anal about who's a musician and who isn't then I'll agree and go with Vangelis, Beau Ray Fleming, Charles Mims Jr., Reggie Andrews, Bobby Orlando and Quincy Jones. Happy now?

I agree.

Without a system to make this list we will never agree. I think we even wouldn't agree on the system used to make the list.

We could let DJ Mag make a poll.

Yeah, even though he's awfully mediocre sometimes (especially lately), he's undeniably the first name of ambient in my book. The guy made so many classics it's not even funny (not all of them are pure ambient though):
Air (I & II)
Namlook (I & II)
Syn

and especially his collabs with:
Mixmaster Morris (Dreamfish)
Klaus Schulze (Dark Side Of The Moog)
Move D (even the newer ones are great)
Biosphere (The Fires Of Ork)
M. Maurice (4Voice)
....

In terms of quality neither one of his god knows how many albums touches SAWII, Substrata or Three Organic Experiences IMO, but he made a lot of awesome music and I respect him very much.

Posted by Noisician on Feb-22-2009 19:54:

nothing at all comes close to SAWII. it's pretty much in a league of its own.

Air. 10,000 Hz Legend cannot be denied, I fell in love with it again the other day.

Or whoever came up with the intro to Everything In It's Right Place. Simply beautiful, and I hate Kid A.

Air is good, really good, but I don't think they are the greatest of all time.

Thats probably a good thing too, it'd be a shame to have a lot of people copying their style.
