NY vs ATL

I don't think there is a comparison to be made here.

I am back in NY monthly, scene is very poor when compared to 5 years ago, but Cielo, Pacha and Sulivan Room continue to be great spots.

I need to check out the Mark.

I was back at Pacha for Chus and Boris a few days ago. I like the dark and dirty sound that just does not seem to be played down here. Plus the seedy nature of Pacha is truly an afterhours event. Not a pre 2am affair.

Just my thoughts, as I still spend much of my time in NY.

PS-New Yorers don't go to Webster Hall no matter who is there. Leave that for the bridge and tunnel crowd...

I miss Exit, Crobar, Spirit, Arc, Halloweens at BED, and especially Centro Fly!

The scene in New York is far better and there is no comparison...

I'm just saying Opera isn't that bad of a club in retrospect to some of the "best mega clubs."

New York vs. Atlanta

6am vs. 3am
Lots of talent vs. Rare talent
Many clubs vs. A few clubs
Great sound systems vs. Static and distortion

New York still wins hands down, like I said a few times already in this thread though, my whole point was just to point out I have a new found respect for Opera's staff so to speak.

Jaytech @ The Mark would be a amazing show.

when's that show?

Posted by PVDfan07 on Mar-25-2009 16:11:

I hear a lot of complaining about the sound distortion. Would turning it down a bit help at all? Everytime I'm at Opera, the sound is right on the edge of being too loud. I'm not the biggest fan of really loud music. Probably stems from many years of coming home from concerts hearing nothing but static. I now wear ear plugs at concerts. At clubs though, it's not that loud, but still getting up there.

And Slow clapper, I think they were just hoping for Jaytech. Checked his myspace and it looks like he'll be too busy spinning in Bali to come here. Why is it random countries get more names than Atlanta, GA?

Opera is already quiet -- on all frequencies.

Seriously? I mean, I know it's not crazy loud as I said, but there's no way that's quiet. For example, sometimes when vocal songs are played, the voice sounds really high pitched because of the distortion and half the time I can't understand what they're saying. I don't know a whole lot about sound, but there's got to be a way to play live music without it killing people's ears. I actually read somewhere that people that go to clubs regularly experience hearing loss frequently. That's not what I want.

Posted by iammesol on Mar-25-2009 18:19:

Distortion comes from peaking speakers beyond their limit. That doesn't mean you can hear the speakers loudly in the first place.

Digweed's sound relies a lot on basslines, and while I could actually HEAR the bass for once, I still could not FEEL it. The mids were almost non-existing. I could talk to people on the floor without screaming, and that isn't optimal sound. It reminded me of the lawn at Lakewood.

I wear plugs at all times. In fact, mine came with a free case that attaches to your key chain, so I never forget them. It's incredibly important to wear them in clubs simply because of the extremities of volume, not to mention the producers of dance music (usually) have maximized all frequencies.

The best system I've ever heard was at HOM, Charlotte, when I saw Lee Burridge last January. You could feel the bass, yet it was not overbearing. The hats and claps snapped, yet did not peak my eardrums. I don't know how they did that, but it was absolutely fantastic.

I look forward to Opera's new system, because I think that could really change my opinion on that club.

Opera is getting a new sound system? Yay

Posted by iammesol on Mar-25-2009 18:38:

My mistake... they spoke of that on Lunar, not TA.

Mind clearing it up, Devin? I don't know the details, and the mods deleted the first half of the Digweed thread where people were talking about it.

This is by no means a shot at the Liquified peeps because they've done a great job.

But it does come down to promoting and making sure a crowd shows up. In some of these smaller countries...the promoters are just able to get bigger crowds and there for a better show in the opinion of the DJ.

The Liquified guys can definitely get a crowd for the big names...but it's definitely harder for the smaller names such as Jaytech.

The Atlanta scene gets a lot...I want to call "fake fans" to come out for Tiesto and Armin and what have ya. Those "fake fans" do not come out for equally talented DJs with less popularity.

Posted by ZeeRobot1 on Mar-25-2009 18:42:

Ummm I also saw that The Chemical Brothers are playing at cochella you should um bring them this way

I know what you're saying. I sometimes feel like I pay $25 to go back to High School, because half the people who show up act like they're still in High School. It sucks to pay all that money and be drowning in a sea of retards =P

Yep...I actually fall into a trance when I go see trance DJs...I let myself go and just zone out and enjoy the music.

But I'm constantly being pushed and knocked around...and what do I see, a bunch of "kids" who I can only assume used fake IDs to get in. They look like freshmen in high school, and those X's on their hands do not help. Because it's like "great...I just paid $8.00 for this drink plus tip...and you made me spill it and you can't even go and buy me a new one because you don't know what liquor tastes like."

Not to alarm anyone going to Armin...but I might flip out and bust some skulls if these freshmen high school kids are in full force next week.

solution: get a table or upgrade to the second floor if you have that problem!

Posted by ZeeRobot1 on Mar-25-2009 22:30:

Jaytech at the Mark wouldnt be hard that place is a intimate venue for just such a type of dj with that kind of following.

Posted by PVDfan07 on Mar-26-2009 05:03:

The djs we get here are great and all, but they always tend to bring out the "fake fan" kids. Makes me almost dread going to a show knowing I'm going to have to deal with that. I know I've mentioned before how I wish we could get some of those smaller names here. I mean, it's always great to get on here and see Ferry or Armin will be here, but they always pass through. It would be something else if I got on here one day and saw John O'Callaghan or Menno de Jong just to name a couple. There's so many that would really excite me, we got to be able to get one or two of them here. I mean, even Rank 1 was a nice surprise.

And Romz, stop being such a negative person. Maybe people don't want to pay a whole lot of money to get a table or go up top.

About the sound. Good to hear you wear ear plugs Sam. I bring them, but like I said, it's usually at the volume where if I put them in, I have trouble hearing, and if they're out, it's a little too loud.

Etymotics aren't like that.

I wondered about the crowd at Digweed...

I'm not really a front row type person, but I was so excited to see John Digweed that I stayed up in the very front for his entire set. It was awesome to take in the music, and see Diggers working, awesome... except that I kept getting shoved around on the dance floor.

Don't get me wrong, I love dancing and I understand that it can get crowded out there, and invariably there will be some natural bumping into people. Unfortunately, there were moments at the show where people were aggressively trying to 'muscle in' to my area. Several times I had to either tell the person explicitly, "hey man, I'm standing right here," or have to physically just sort of hold my ground until the offending person understands that I'm not moving. I'd be thinking "Seriously, man are you into the DJ or what?"

Anyway, I felt like many of the guys on the dance floor were on a mission to try and dry hump people, and many of the women were just oblivious to JD and enjoying the meat market-ness of it all. In short... I don't really care what people are doing on the dance floor, until they start encroaching on my area in a manner which I felt was unnecessary. And, I certainly don't think the general audience there was nearly as excited about John Digweed as the TAs in attendance.

I guess you've got to figure, people catch wind of a "popular" DJ playing and everybody comes out regardless... I'm looking forward to Armin, but I will not be standing in front like I was for Digweed. I'm gonna try a side position.

Yeah, you're going to get a lot of that at Opera for these big events. I hate people that try to muscle in to my space. I'm used to standing my ground because I deal with it at metal concerts all the time. The cub crowd isn't as hostile, but they can be very disrespectful. I mean, I'm a nice guy, but I will stand my ground and have told people off before. I mean, even if people keep bumping into me without even trying to stop, I may even give them a little push just to let them know I'm there. As far as I know most the TAs are respectful and of course there for the music. Too bad there's always going to be the random club goers though. I got up front for Above and Beyond when they were on stage, but usually go off to the side and near the end of the night I may try to make my way up to the front for a few.

Posted by Big Worm on Mar-26-2009 18:05:

nice. I suppose I should expect more of the same for Armin. oh well.

Posted by trancension on Mar-26-2009 19:25:

I've probably seen you a dozen times by PVDfan but don't even know what you look like haha.

Because that's sort of my area too, up front but a little to the side (right when facing the stage).

that's hilarious. At Digweed I actually asked a few people, who I thought could be TAs if they were, and I got some really confused looks. Maybe we'll all be able to cross paths at the Armin show. At Digweed I was front and center, and kept feeling a lot of push from a large contingent of folks that were directly adjacent to my right. It was mildly awkward at times because I refused to move.

Agreed. For $250+ for VIP tables I want to be sitting in the DJ booth with unlimited supply of Goose all night. Otherwise, I ain't payin' that much to be around the same type of ignorant retards who'll drag every barely dressed and barely legal teenage girl up there along with them =P

Do any of you remember my story of 18 y/o rollin' her brains out chick friend-of-a-friend being picked up by Armin? Yeah, typical night at Opera 8-)

Posted by ZeeRobot1 on Mar-26-2009 23:05:

woot for kaskade.

This show is going to be fucking insane I dont see how more of yall arent excited.
