Tunes were pretty good (for not being a huge Richardo fan), but the weather really put a damper on things. The vibe was really getting good during the 1st hour, but it got dampened pretty fast - literally.

Carl Craig et al. at Metropolis the night before was a better event.

Some really great other stuff to take in too at Mutek. This was unbelievable live: http://mutek.org/blog/81-mutek_10-p...rt-henkes--atom

lol I heard the whole event was "overall pretty boring"

this

plus this party was fucking awesome, it was a little chilly but then the sun came out and it was fine. villalobos played this one tune i couldn't believe my ears, i had to ask nata if she was hearing the same thing as me to confirm the goodness

a crazy fucking loop with this insane snare and a sick piano melody that kept changing throughout the whole thing

also biggest surprise was seeing cobblestone jazz play at some afterparty venue, being amazed by the tunes and only finding out it was cobblestone jazz the next day lol

total fail

I had an amazing time. Music was great, Villalobos was fun as usual. Yes the weather could have been better, but for those of us who stuck it out for the entire day we were awarded with an amazing day.

I think I have a video of that song...the sun had just come back out and Ricardo had a record in his hand when Sneak pulled out a cd and gave it to Ricardo and pointed to the CDJ and Ricardo played it.

PS...Zip needs to get some sleep

It was actually the Modern Deep Left Quartet -- which is the 3 members of Cobblestone Jazz and the Mole. Amazing live.

other than the weather on sunday, this years Mutek was fantastic!

whomever told you it was boring is a fucking nutter and probably only checked out a few things. There is NOTHING like this in toronto.

Anybody make it to the afterparty monday morning with Ricardo and Sneak?

Posted by Big Boss on Jun-02-2009 15:41:

Picnik was lame. I don't care who I offend by saying that. Ricardo may be GOD to some of you, but it was a dull party (the horrible weather obviously killed a lot of the vibe).

Milena: Do you speak any english?

Villalobos: Yes, of course.

Milena: I want you to meet my boyfriend Dave, he's a big fan of yours.

Ace: Hey man, big fan... much respect, I actually named my dog after you

Villalobos? YA?

Milena: Wanna see?

Villalobos: YA!

[Milena shows camera phone pic.]

Villalobos: You have 3 DOGS?!?

Ace: No, that's just one.

[Villalobos looks again.]

Villalobos: OH! wow.

I started my weekend off being terribly ill.... went to see Atom on friday evening @ 6:30 which was pretty cool... went for a lovely italian dinner with the crew at a great restaurant called "Romeo". Got up in the morning, went to Coras across from our hotel with a bunch of peeps, and then headed off to Picnik day 1. The Mole was great, but Thomas Fehlmann really stole the show (boy that man can play). Went home and crashed for a little after that... headed out late to Metropolis (which is kind of like sonic and modclub mushed into one and extra big... lol. Don't know who the little dj was in the side room, but he stole me away till Carl Craig. Carl Craig was fantastic, and I was front row the whole time... but by 4am i was dying for sleep and headed home. Sunday got up around midday, grabbed a quick bite to eat, and jump started our afternoon to Picnik. Ricardo was already on when we arrived around 3pm... zip and him took turns alternatively playing off eachothers sound. I honestly didnt think I was going to be able to make it through the turmoil weather. Most of toronto headed home, but myself and a few others decided to brave it out. Front row right on the railing, neither hail nor wind nor rain nor thunder could have stopped us from danicng screaming and shaking. It was perfect weather for a festival, who cares, we are rockstars right? DJ Sneak made a guest appearance, and I hooked up with some of the people he had come in with, they informed me that there was an afterparty... so I decided to head home a little early from picnik around 8pm or so. I crashed hard till around 2am, got up, got ready, and busted my ass to SAT.Caught the end of the party @ SAT which was apparently really terrible, had a few drinks, and headed out with Sneak and Ricardo to the afterparty in old MTL. It wa sin an old studio loft appartment which was super cool. They had a makeshift bar in the kitchen, and I would say maybe 150-200 people max. It reached capacity instantly... but for those who made it in... what a monday morning it was to remember. DJ Sneak played all morning while ricardo busted a move or two on the dance floor with anyone and everyone...the walls were shaking and we couldnt open any windows incase the cops were called, so it was just a pure steam bath... no one looked pretty by the end of it, but absolutely everyone was having a blast. Sneak played some latin flavoured music late into the morning, followed by a little bit of moving and shaking tribal which turned the whole room animalistic. Quite possibly the best house party ever, and such a surreal moment in time. We decided to quit the afterparty just before midday and went back to Opus to chill with Ricardo and Sneak... had a few bevvies and chatted away. Tried to convince Riccardo on multiple occasions to come to toronto, even offered to change his flights for him but he said that his booking agent wouldnt allow...seriously considered missing my train and staying with a girlfriend for the night... to the point where in a sheer panick @ 3:10 i decided to smarten the hell up, get my shit together, checked out of my hotel form the opus by phone and scrammed to the train, only to get on the train for 3:20, as it departed @ 3:30. Following this, there was a shit load of ceasers consumed.

ps. one of the coolest/ nicest things I saw all day was Ricardo handing out his own 26ers of vodka and scotch to people in the crowd so that they could drink and stay warm in the 3'C pouring rain weather.

You obviously spent a lot of time writing that posts, but no one is going to read one long paragraph. Here it is with some space so it doesn't hurt the eye.

Doesn't it look much better?

you heard wrong

if people don't like more minimal stuff, WTF were they doing at this event? lol!

The Mutek people deserve a ton of credit for pulling off a *flawless* event that would never happen in Toronto.

Sunday was eventually killed for me by the rain/cold, but Saturday was amazing!

I definitely agree with MK that Thomas Fehlmann stole the show on Saturday...but good sets all around. perfect weather, great tunes and a cool crowd. probably the most fun I've had at a party in quite some time.

Sunday was killed a bit for me by the cold/rain, but what I did hear from Ricardo was pretty good. I kind of had my fill from Saturday and bailed with half the group late in the afternoon.

how can you argue with:

- $10 admission each day
- BYOB, despite a cash bar on-site.
- fairly quick line at the entrance throughout the day, with virtually none at all for washrooms and for drinks
- sound was quite good for an outdoor venue. the covered stacks didn't ruin anything and while not needed on Sat, they sure came in handy on sunday.

honestly a flawless event. Toronto could learn a lot from montreal in that regard.

as for Montreal dying...yeah, the nightlife has taken a hit over the years, but apparently Stereo is close to reopening and will be bigger? interesting.

and Porter Air FTW. given the option, I'll never fly out of Pearson again.

Piknik was OK, but the weather really did put a damper on things. What a cock-tease it was waking up early in the morning and seeing clear skies and thinking "Yes, going to be a beautiful day today!", only for the weather to take a turn for the worse by time I got there.

Really wish they had moved it inside this year, few times I almost called it quits and left - but stuck around until the end (except the encore.)

All around, my highlights of Mutek this year was the Atom installation and NSI. Wish I had stuck around for Alva Noto & Byetone at the Raster Noton showcase, but had gone there straight from Piknik and needed to freshen up for Nocturn that night, and gotta say - Cyclo and Atom TM didn't do that much for me.

awww love that track!

I thought Mutek was a lot of fun, completely different from DEMF, also very well organized, one thing i would do diff next year is concentrate more on the exhibits such as the Atom installation would of loved to see that

only got to go to Metropolis on Saturday since we got to Montreal around 5
DOP was opening up, and for some reason had an MC which was pretty weird (not in a good way)
Dandy jack and Mathew Johnson played really well.
Then Carl Craig came on and turned it completely down, was pretty abstract for the first couple of tracks, picked it up after that but that was a bit of a buzz kill
really love the light effects they do at Metropolis, was even more impressed then last year

Slept in on Sunday and got to Piknik around 5, the weather was crap and def made it a lot harder to get into the party, the music was wiked though until Ricardo got a little too kooo kooo. I think it was around 10 maybe he just got very abstract to the point it was worse then elevator music, the booth antics were pretty entertaining at this point lol, but we left back to the hotel to warm up.

Went to SAT for a couple of hours, the vibe was lacking but the music was dope, i later found out it was Modern Deep Left Quartet part of which is Cobblestone Jazz one of my favorite music acts

The house after party was sooo fun as well, 2 bad Ricardo was done playing by the time we got there, but Sneak was laying down some super fun groovy stuff, the place was a sauna though so didnt stick around too long
