-- Here I said it all !! Detailed reasons why every EDM fan HATES Opera..
Pages (7): « 1 2 3 [4] 5 6 7 »
I haven't been to Opera since its first show after re-opening.
Damn has it been a while.
Yea, well i just scanned the thread, so pardon if it has been mentioned....
The sound system sucks, the sound quality is poor... i could elaborate, but thats just my 2 cents. I don't go to shows there for this reason above many of the others everyone else has brought up...
DISCLAIMER: This is not coming from Liquified but it is coming from me, myself, and I....DEVIN WALKLEY. I have a lot to say here about things that have been posted, I will probably cuss (which I rarely do when speaking in public forums), I will probably piss some of you off, and I will probably opens some eyes but I feel that I need to talk about some of the things that have been posted that I feel very passionate about ......
I first started going out to live shows 24 years ago and first started going out to clubs to hear "dance" music 20 years ago. I have toured with the Dead, I went to tons of teen clubs when I was younger, know a ton of musical genius on a personal level and experienced A LOT of life through music. I fell in love with music at an early age and always new that music was going to be my life. To say that I have been around the block and back is a bit of an understatement.
When I first started going out to clubs I had no idea what the name of the song being played was, who the dj was or really what I was doing there. All I knew was I was going out and having a lot of fun whether it be walking around, dancing, or just standing there. I just had that emotion in me that knew that I wanted to be there. The experience to be part of it was amazing.
I am sure that I was the poser to the "veterans" but that didn't matter to me because this was my life and I created my own path and lived how I wanted to. I was raised not to judge and to live my life like everyone around me was an equal.
These shows are part of an entertainment industry. The sole purpose is for people to go out and be entertained whether it be dancing, walking, standing, being VIP, or hitting on girls. That's the brilliance of what entertainment is about, it has no boundaries. A lot of the people hating in this thread are stating things like people should not be able to go to these shows if they don't know a track, these people aren't true fans of EDM or they are just there to pick up chicks. WHO CARES? They are there to be entertained, they are there to let off some steam from everyday life, they are there because a friend said they should because they would have fun, or they are there because they wanted to try something new. IT DOES NOT MATTER because at the end of the day they are there and they are part of the night just like everyone else.
For the most part in this thread people are hating on Opera because of the crowd you think the venue attracts. Sorry that's part of going out anywhere in the world. It happens EVERYWHERE and not just at Opera. There will always be those who bitch about this and that and say they wont go somewhere because of a "crowd' the place attracts or whatever. That's your opinion and that's fine but honestly some of the things that have been said in this thread comes off as disturbing to me. We as a society should of progressed further then this, its almost like going back to the days of segregation with some of the statements put forth here. You don't want these people at the shows that are "yours" because they don't think they know a single song or they look funny. ARE YOU SERIOUS? It reminds me of the same thing where black people were made to ride in the back of the bus because of their color. Sure you will think that statement is a bit of a stretch but its really not if you think bigger in the picture.
Yes there are people who don't like Opera, but the next set wont like the tabernacle, wont like the mark, won't like wetbar, hell there are people who may not like me anymore for what I had to say in this thread and that's fine.
I very much welcome threads like this to be posted because I do very much care about opinions, if I didn't I would not still be doing shows in Atlanta after almost 15 years. BUT we were all wet behind the ears at one point and had to start somewhere, so instead of hating maybe we should all be teaching! Reach out to people, talk to them, learn something about them, say hi, smile or whatever!
Remember this is entertainment, not who knows the most tracks, or who dances the most, or who feels that should be there more then others because they know more about a certain music or who the DJ is. It's about living and having fun. If your not having fun at this particular place then find another spot that you enjoy more, I just ask that you don't judge people and just enjoy life because its way to short!
I understand your point Devin, and it would be different (for me, at least) if I could at least feel like the venue respects my patronage to put up with other attendees that I may find annoying. However, aside from wanting to slap the girl who accidentally shoves a cigarette into you, burning a hole in your shirt without apologizing, or the guy who literally tumbles over you and knocks you to the floor without apologizing, I also want to slap the bouncer who holds the line while talking to someone about old men in expensive cars, the bartender who disappears with a $10 bill of yours, or the other bouncer who flat out lies and starts yelling at you when you tell him you KNOW there is a bathroom downstairs.
The other people in attendance for the evening can be as retarded as they wish, but if I pay $30+ to come into your establishment, I want to feel like my presence is welcomed and appreciated.
I do like the idea you're putting shows in other places. I'm anxious to check a few of those out, even if I'm not all about the DJ
Hi Devin,
I am not a big Armin V Buuren fan. I like trance but am into psy more than mainstream. I was at the AVB thing. First, a few notes:
1. I paid a large amount for my ticket.
2. I got stopped outside (as in once inside) because there were too many people on the dance floor.
3. I I spent a 100 bucks on drinks and just when I ran out of cash and asked for a glass of water she said sorry the credit card section is closed. For god sakes. A glass of water.
Finally, I'm not pissed of about all those things. These things happen. It would be better if they didn't but anyway.
What I am really pissed off about it that fact that the sound system totally SUCKS at opera. I stood there, all over the place to ensure it wasn't just where I was standing but it sucked everywhere. Trance is about sound and all I was hearing was jibberish and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the DJ.
So, that's my complaint. If I wanted to just do the drinking, clubbing thing I would just go on regular nights. But why do you torture us with the shitty sound coupled with awesome DJ's?
Devin, I appreciate your post and agree with you for the most part. I did think comparing it to segregation was a stretch and a little unfair. We aren't saying people have to look a certain way. Heck, I wear everyday clothes there. I don't feel the need to dress up in a suit and wear gucci shades to fit in. If anything, people would be hating on me. What's wrong with thinking people should go to a show to listen to the music? I mean, they can pick up chicks or whatever elsewhere. It's a respect thing. Like when people go to movies and talk. Why ruin the experience for others if you know there are other places you can do it? I guess honestly as long as they don't bother others, it's fine for them to be there. It's just when they go just to get wasted and bump into people, that's when it becomes a problem. I know a lot of the discussion has been about Opera, but you are right, it happens all over. I mean, I was nearly attacked by a stoned guy while being bumped into by crazy people at Wetbar too. The scene attracts a lot of bad characters. I mean in any kind of music you will have some bad seeds. Ours tends to lean towards snobs and druggies.

It's sad because when I bring friends out to shows they usually respond with "well I had fun but I felt like I didn't belong there".
Unfortunately, I feel that way too a lot of the time. Combination of age and status.
Wow, i have been keeping up with this thread but really people. If you dont like the club, do NOT go. It is America and no one is twisting your arm and forcing you to go. No one made you pay a high ticket price to go. I have yet to go to Opera because of some of the things I have heard about it. Not even when my favorite DJ PVD has been there. Probably wont this time around either. Does that mean other people should not go, no as this is strictly a personal decision that should be made by the individual.
I for one believe that all people who are at the club deserve to be there. Why, because they paid to get in or knew someone who could let them in. I smile any time a club is packed, especially with those who look unfamiliar with the music. They usually end up feeding off the crowd and asking themselves "what was that" and might end up coming out again which is a good thing.
For those who dont remember when EDM events occurred many many years ago, it was all one crowd. Everyone knew why the other person was at the event. People kept bringing their friends and they brought their friends. Usually most of these people moved on whether it be to have a family or worry about their career more. For the few that are still around, we try to go out and think every event should be like it was 10 years ago. What you dont realize is that we are a dying breed and need more people (of whatever type) to show up to EDM events because without people, there is no money and without money, there is no DJ.
So next time you go to a club that you do not like, paying door entry you do not like, and drink prices you do not like, with a DJ that you do not like playing on speakers you do not like, with a crowd that you do not like...... ask yourself, "is it the crowd that does not belong or me that does not belong?" Because in the end everyone that is there, including yourself would not be there if there was not some fun to be had of whatever type.
I realize some people just want to get it out of what they think of Opera and really meant no ill will. Same goes with my post, I just wanted to get my opinion on the matter out.
I agree with Devin no one is making you go out to the events and just because you know what they have been spinning for the past 3 years doesnt really entitle you to a right to see this dj more than the next "n00b" but its the way it is man opera may not be the best venue but its a hell of alot better than 90% of those hole in the wall clubs in the US. Yes they it gets packed in there its a big dj people want to see him high demand for a big named dj yeah its going to be a sold out show. Most clubs anywhere you go will have staff that come off as superficial and such its just the way it is I have been to other clubs with douche bags 10X worse then OPERA. Liquifed is doing their best to bring events to smaller venues all across atlanta to please everyone and right now the EDM scene in atlanta is better then its ever been so I dont see why people complain. Its not my favorite venue but if DJ's request it and devin books it why bitch ? He could of just not brought that DJ all together.
You want to see all these djs at your favorite venue then start your own events company and bring armin otherwise I would just let devin do what he does and be patient.
everyone stop being such a negative nancy
no offence btw everyone <3

waaaaahhhhhh ![]()

I think Chris just said what I've been trying to say a lot better. *applauds*
1. Anybody has the right to go to Opera.
2. I love seeing the place packed. It shows great respect for the DJs.
3. I'm just saying that the dozens and dozens of people there not listening to the music really ruin my night. You don't have to be a die hard EDM fan to actually listen to the music. I never had this problem at WETBar. Everyone at WETBar was there listening to the music as far as I could tell.
4. Life isn't too short...it's the longest thing you'll ever experience.
5. I don't think of these shows as being mine. Far from it. I don't feel entitled about anything. I go to a lot of shows where I have no idea what is being played, but I still listen to the music (Carl Cox, Sasha, Digweed, Deadmau5, Lee Burridge, Nic Faniculi, Kazell, Kaskade). I have no idea what songs they play. I still actually go to dance and listen to the music though. I don't go and then spend the entire time walking through people and being a douche bag in general who gives nasty looks to people who are dancing and listening to the music.
6. Seeing a show at Opera is the equivalent of seeing a movie on opening night in the middle of the summer. Not only is the place beyond crowded, but the movie theatre oversold tickets for the showing I bought tickets to. So now I enter the theatre and there are no seats. What's worse is, this is the only time this movie will be shown in Atlanta for about 8-12 months. So I have to sit on the stairs. What's worse is, the people around me where I am being forced to have such a shitty seat are talking throughout the movie and whenever I ask them to keep it quiet, they give me a nasty look and tell me to shut up. And to make things even worse, the screen the projector is playing on has a bunch of dirt and crud on it ruining the actual image.
7. It really seems like none of you are getting what I am saying except for those of you who agree with me. Those of you disagreeing with me aren't actually disagreeing with me. You think you disagree with me, but it really seems like you have no idea what I am talking about.
And like I said before a few times. By all means keep doing what you're doing. I didn't expect to change anything. But I definitely won't change anything by just keeping my mouth shut. So keep using Opera by all means. I'm just one customer after all. It does appear hundreds and hundreds of people like that place.
Do realize though, that my analogy used in #6 is 100% accurate. If you don't realize this, you need to get a better grasp on your product.
That was a good analogy. I've heard it a lot, but have people actually verbally been rude to a lot of you guys? I wouldn't doubt it, just curious.
And the whole Wetbar was better than Opera thing, I'm not so sure. The sound may be better, as well as the atmosphere, but as I said before, I've had trouble with people there just like at Opera. I only went there 3 times and it wasn't overly packed, but then again, the djs weren't mega djs either. People have had terrible experiences at Wetbar just as much as they have Opera. I think it all depends on who's playing.
Well I've seen Armin...Ferry... at WETBar isn't that where Sander played too?
I know some people have had some bad experiences there...but I haven't.
The sound there was better and the crowd was better...at least in my experiences.
I actually had several friends who would only go out if the show was specifically not at Opera...guess I'm joining them.
Ive been to opera once for Above and beyond and it was a great night. Just about every soul in that building was into that set and enjoyed themselves to the fullest. I havent been enough to opera to justify all of your claims or not...all i know is it was a fuckin epic night the one time we did drive down from charlotte. No issues with staff, people enjoyed themselves, and i didnt see anyone loathing about how they hate edm. Actually ive never seen people complaining about edm in any club that has an event booked and i have been seeing shows damn near every week for over a decade. Occasionally i run into people that were drug there by their edm loving friends who arent necessarily digging the music but none the less they came with friends who did and dealt with it. Even if there are a select group in every club who complain and such....the number of fans screaming and dancing far outweighs them in numbers. Idk, maybe if i went there weekly i would experience this bullshit you guys seem to have dealt with there in the past. The only thing i can even relate to anyone really speaking on opera is the sound system. Its apparent to everyone the system is far from crystal clear. Beyond that i have no complaints and look forward to coming back.
I would have no complaints if only the sound was up to the level one would come to expect at an even like that.
My Creative 2.1's produce better sound.
some of you just need to stop being so fkn nit picky about everything and just enjoy the show for what it is.. smoke some weed or something to loosen you up, god damn! =]
Don't eat brownies though.
so, it seems like a fair number of us are at a crossroads... give up on Opera and miss seeing DJ's we love, or attend Opera and have to endure the crowd, staff, sound, etc.
i think it's time that we re-examine an old acronym that everybody knows...
i'm talking about PLUR. Yeah, I said it.
Peace- Hostility typically serves no purpose other than to defend an ego that is lacking inner peace.
Love- Acts and feelings of goodwill towards all others are a moral imperative with their own rewards.
Unity- this can mean either that: We are all united in the human condition, or
As social beings, the feeling of connectedness with others is the ultimate end to our efforts.
Respect- A person must show regard for the feelings of others through their actions and inaction, and one must have respect for oneself.
i know, I Know, this acronym probably rubs a lot of you the wrong way. i admit, it's not my fav either. there is a certain "hokiness factor" that is undeniable, but look, somebody said it in an earlier post, edm fans stateside are a minority, especially in a market like ATL.
and, in an environment like opera, anybody that is posting on TA is most definitely a minority in the crowd. let me be clear, we don't need to be all kumbaya and lovey-dovey with the patrons of opera. i do think that if we are able to adjust our internal compasses to see beyond the ridiculousness of the general crowd, maybe in the end, it will allow us to not have our serenity affected to such a degree, and in turn, be able to really enjoy/appreciate the DJs we love regardless of what the clown that's trying to walk through you is doing. Just a thought.
I get the impression a lot of folks attitudes have become very jaded about opera. i don't think you should allow the crowd to drive you away from something that means so much to you.
the sound system is a different story though.
and, i promise i will never mention the "p" word again.
Haha. The ridiculousness of the crowd!!
