To woscar:

Ya I like ATB...and? I don't feel shamed into liking everything except trance like most of the users around here. And yes, I have seen Ableton. That is all.

This is a huge reason Prydzy doesn't like his sets to be recorded. The idea that people will hear his music in crap quality is bad enough, much less when they press it to vinyl and sell it at a 6th generation quality.

The density of people and how they can't hear that is amazing to me.

Actually I don't have an opinion about him.

It was just a simple statement with a "most likely" included. If you think about it - it is probably true. The vast majority of music listeners are not musically savvy, hence why genre's like pop/dance are mainstream. They have simple melodies that are catchy, combined with some nice pleasing lyrics. It is not complex; i.e., exactly what a lot of people look for in music. It is Something they can sing to/hum to, etc.

In addition, the vast majority of people do not listen to high quality music, for one reason or another. My point was that I would assume the 2 populations overlap significantly.

The statement has nothing to do with deduction - it is merely anecdotal, and without implied causation. So of course, hating bad quality music does not mean that you think deadmau5 sucks, just as much as liking bad quality music does not mean that one enjoys deadmau5.

Cliff notes:
1) Majority of music listeners listen to simple music
2) Majority of music listeners listen to low quality music
3) Populations probably overlap significantly

Most EDM isn't any more complex than a typical pop song. It's kind of a laugh when people who listen to trance, house, and techno make fun of pop listeners for liking "simple" music.

Ya I agree completely. But at least it has a lot of production skill behind it that can be appreciated (well, some at least)

This is the first deadmau5 thread I've ever found worthwhile of reading.

I've heard you say that a few times and it galls me.

Good electronic music may be simplistic structurally, but it's subtle and detailed in ways that pop and rock will never achieve.

I'm not saying that pop compares to the very best and most detailed electronic stuff. I'm just talking about your *typical* straight ahead dance tunes that make up the majority of releases. Something like the tracks discussed in this thread, for example:

You mean mainstream pop and rock? Because there's rock and even pop music that's hundred times more complex and deeper than your average club tune.

And you're mixing things up here. I'm sure JBJ is talking about dance music when he says that most EDM is as complex as some average pop music. Electronic music can be very complex and detailed, something like Cinemascope by Monolake, In Between by Jazzanova or stuff on Ninja Tune can proudly stand among the best albums of non-electronic music.

So this whole debate and whining in here is pretty pointless. I could understand if Squarepusher or some other producer of music that can really benefit from high sound quality came here and complained, but when average dance music producer complains about that stuff... well it's just laughable.

Thought or hoped that was what you meant. It's clear now.

The only person you're kidding with that is yourself.

Fucks sake, I'd be just glad people were hunting for my tunes to listen to in the first place. My audience is friends, girlfriend, son and parents occasionally.

Posted by notelfreak on Jun-10-2009 10:12:

some pop music can have great production value, the simplicity of it involves the actual lack of searching out for it imo.

most edm is not shoved down your throat and handed to you on a silver platter 45 times a day through the mainstream media.

it is simple to turn on the radio and go this song is number one in my country so be default it is awesome (same can be said for a lot of beatport shoppers as well), it is not quite so simple to scour oodles of releases to find that one gem that makes you fist pump in your mothers basement while saying why don't you do better to anyone that shits on your tastes.

This thread is more entertaining than any deadmau5 track =/

No strangers to puns here, no sir.

"boreds"... because you have to be seriously fucking bored to be here crying and bitching about music, people, and other subject where your opinion gets both laughed at and disregarded at the same time.

I guess they don't teach you what a pun is until grade 3 at your school.

Keep on trucking there fella. You'll do just fine.
