ah, okay. i thought that was just an effect of excessive limiting. what exactly creates that sound?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what happens is you connect two instrument tracks together and have one control the other.

The most common usage is having the synth muffle over a beat.

I'm pretty sure this is how it works, but I'm sure some actual producers on here can explain it better than me.

Nearly , the kick triggers the volume of an intstrument to drop rapidly then back up until the next kick drops the volume again.

not always , but usually
