the city officials are blatantly anti-english for some strange bitter reason. they seem to carry a grudge thrugh generations instaed of grwoing up and becoming the international cosmo city it "could" be.

their streets signs, subway signs and metro passes and signs are all in French only while most city's in Canada )toronto, ottawa, new brunswick, etc bend over backwards to have everything bilingual. englsih speakers are more or less shut out of eveeryhting even in emergency situations their signs are french only. They are only hurting themselves because alot of american tourists opt for something / some place they can understand and they lose out on alot of revenue, poor idiots can't see that. their subway system is outdated and not handicapped friendly. Most of the people who work in customer service are rude, tacky and nasty.

there's a ton more but i'll give you a chance to chimne in.

Wow, you really dont understand how tourism works...

and she didn't know wtf i said..

eventually i said 'toilet?" and she's like "oh it's over there behind the bar"

fucking bitch spoke english. what a ****.

If you had started with "Excusez-moi" (excuse me) or "S'il vous plait" (please) or "je ne parle pas francais" (i dont speak french), and then proceeded to ask your question in english, then you would never have had that problem. It's called being polite. Maybe you should check on that. Being polite is really popular with civilised people right now.

Really, I have no problem answering an English to someone who is polite and at least has the decency to acknowledge the French language.

Seems like I'm a little late to chime in on this but your post is funny, because it echoes exactly the point that my friend was trying to drive across last week.

He cited an example of a couple that came from Buffalo, NY. They came for the jazz festival and overall enjoyed their stay (week-long I think)very much, having spent over $1000 on entertainment during their stay. They said they really enjoyed being here, aside fro mthe fact that they were hit with THREE parking tickets, incurring a total fine of over $200. Unfortunately, it is the tickets that they will remember about Montreal, not the good time they had.

And yes, this is because they could not understand were confused by the signs at the various locations where they parked, because they're only in french.

And as an English Montrealer, although it's gotten better as my french has improved, I have felt rather left out for a very long time.

Your point is incredibly weak. If I go to Berlin, Tel Aviv, Washington, Beirut or New Delhi, it's my own problem to not understand parking signs.

So it is their responsibility to understand them. We have a different language, as do many countries in the world. What part of that dont you understand.

You would expect me to NOT pay a parking ticket if I visit Toronto, Berlin or Tel Aviv because I don't understand THEIR language. That is one stupid point to make.

No... it's more like me going to miami and getting a ticket cause all the signs are in spanish

If this is how you see Americans, you're really missing out on how amazing this country really is.
There is definitely an anti-anglo sentiment in Quebec, and if people can't see it they're not paying attention. I'm not saying it's everywhere, it doesn't affect me when I visit, but I definitely see it. There is a large chunk of the population that has the cultural equivalent of a Napoleon complex.
Still, learn the language (French) if you live there. I did. It's not that tough.

There was and still is an Anti-Anglo sentiment in the older generations. This sentiment was fully justified. It is not justified now as most Anglos now understand the importance for Quebec's population to protect their cultural and linguistic identity.

You would be hard pressed to find anti-Anglo sentiment in under 30 population.

But, yeah, you can always encounter jerks. Jerks live everywhere, unfortunately.

As far as I know, Florida does not have any offical language other than English.

Quebec's official language is French, under the law and the constitutional powers attributed to Quebec

Well, then your argument is invalid... Florida has a large Spanish population, but Florida's official language is still English.

Whereas Quebec's one and only official language is French.

Posted by Sunsnail on Aug-26-2009 22:11:

Yea, i'm aware, again.

I guess i'll reverse my example. Despite Miami being officially english, there's spanish signs everywhere, because they understand that people have difficulty reading in english.
