Pretty sure sixofour is joking. Although I remember one knowledgeable guy (Derivative) did say that the Virus sucked at making acid sounds, and he owned a TI.
Well, Acidvoice is a website didcated to comparing acid synths [hard and soft] to the real TB303...Virus isn't even considered. So if the virus even does make a half-assed 303 sound, its nothing compared to the 20 or so synths done in the tests at acidvoice.
The bullshit idea that virus can make any sound, is the same reasoning amatures use to say Reason can produce any sound. The end result is an example of how limited people are in their creativity.
Saying virus is the best sound is a direct comparison to saying that wanking your penis is the best sex.

*bump*
Please don't let this retarded conversation die. It's so full of accurate and hilarious information!

| Even if you do have a studio full of great synths (hardware and software), just because you rarely use the other synths doesn't mean the Virus is even usable for a given other producer. No synth is going to please everyone who tries it. |

synths are all about personal taste. so there's no best synth for everyone. i know that i've a different taste than alan. i would never use a waldorf synth again as i know it's absolutely not my taste. but other love this exactly sound. so there's no way everyone would agree that the virus is the best synth.
i think every synth has its strong and weak points for certain sounds. while the virus has some sounds i really love and can't reproduce with other synths i have other sounds from other synths which i can't replicate exactly on the virus. so i have a bunch of synths (hw & sw) and i know exactly for which type of sound which synth i have to use to get the exact timbre i like.
but i agree with sean that the virus is an excellent VA and personally i put it over an NL, waldorf, roland, ...

Some may not feel it's worth the price tag, but believe me if you have one sitting on your desk you'll likely use little other than it. Yes VSTs blah blah are great blah blah. FFS I use Ableton and a lot of my sounds come from an Operator-driven instrument rack, but that said, when it's time for the real meat and potatoes you look to the Virus; otherwise you're just sending a boy, or perhaps a barely-post-pubescent adolescent to do a man's job. The virus is capable of sounds that I guarantee you, nor anyone else has heard in their entire lives. Those sounds may not necessarily work in a trance production, but to claim that there's some sort of "virus sound" that you can immediately recognize is a down-right idiotic thing to say. Perhaps you can immediately recognize the over-used Manuel Schleiss rom bank instantly, but if you think that's all this beast is good for then you're clueless. |

| Originally posted by Sean Walsh Forgive me for exagerrating, it was a bit too much to say that you'll use "little other than it", as that's not even the case for myself. You'll probably run out of voices in a hurry if you start stacking Virus patches, unless of course you're making really simple ones, in which case sure, may as well just use your preferred VST because you're not actually getting any of the benefits from it anyways. my point is just that it's an *extremely* versatile piece of hardware and can make a huge number of unique sounds, and for that reason I don't really see how it could collect dust in someone's studio. I'm actually curious what Storyteller reaches for before his Virus and the when/whys. |

| Originally posted by Sean Walsh I can't really confirm or deny your other points as I've spent about 3 minutes of time playing around with all of the synths you mention combined. I'd be really curious to hear some short clips of the sounds you're talking about though that are much fuller on your other hardware synths. |
Actually yes, I realized that my first post was pretty retarded and didn't specify that I was comparing the Virus to VSTs. I haven't spent any significant amounts of time with hardware synths so I can't compare them. I should have made that clear.
My first two signed tracks (to Gesture and Armada respectively) only used VSTs and instruments built for Jeksola Buzz, so I'm not some hardware purist. I have used a shitload of VSTs, and can say that I'm personally way happier with the TI and would recommend it to anyone looking to add hardware to their setup.
If you think the Virus is "suck", that's nice, we'll just have to agree to completely disagree on the subject.
I used to use my first Virus B with Buzz, but that was about 5-6 years ago. Man, the memories. Buzz... Terrible
. But whatever works
