And yeah, to quote J', "So much for a 'mixtape feel'". This is a very solid set of ambient-to-dub-to-techno, easily on par with anything you might find in the professional leagues. I was quite surprised at how 'lengthy' it sounded, as its 80-minute running time seemed to last forever, in that wonderful "I can't believe it's only 1am!" kind of way. Nothing at all to fault in the music department.

BUT, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in the lack of something more akin to Back To Mine here. Those 'mixtape' series have a tendency to throw wonderfully unexpected musical curveballs, showing off an incredibly eclectic musical background of their featured artist. I... never really got that sense here. Although undoubtedly personal favs, it seemed like jupiterone was more concerned about creating a seamless, flowing set rather than indulging us in some quirky, unique selections; I simply cannot believe that his musical palette would be limited to ambient and techno in such a way as it is represented here.

I'll be honest here: I do hope future installments show more diversity in sharing their classics. It's fine and all to make a solid DJ set of personal favorites, but that's what this forum's generally used for anyway. I think J's intent with this is to get select forum members to get away from DJ sets and expose their musical background without such limitations; yes, proper mixtapes.

there are tons of ta djs on here that could accomplish the goals that this series sets out to do while creating a flawless and flowing set.

it is called talent, and it should not be discouraged. Call me picky, but once i start to hear shoddy mixing and a lack of direction i hit stop and toss the file into the recycling bin.

trainwrecks do not add fun to me.

I do agree with this, however, I think what Sykonee may have been getting at is that this concept should allow the ta dj to be as eclectic as they want and not worry about the technical side of things as much. This doesn't mean trainwrecking, but does allow for more freedomg to switch up to different genres. I see what you're getting at, but what's your view on how many of the back to mine series are mixed?

to be honest, i think the only one i ever heard was the krafty cuts one, and i can't say i liked it that much.

bear in mind i don't usually "waste" my money on mix albums as i spend enough as is on actual eps. Had it been a set of music that skyone enjoyed every track and was mixed perfectly, we probably would not have heard a peep imo.

Both of your opinions are certainly valid, as our expectations are certainly different. Considering i own almost everything that j1 threw in here, to me the way that it was mixed was the part that interested me the most. I've already heard the music, which will most likely be a very common occurrence in a series of classics.

Having something sound like it was crossfaded automatically by winamp on random just has less appeal to me.

a dj should most certainly allowed to mix how they like in this series, and j1 did that.

Personally, I have no problem with seeing different styles of mixing in this game. Everyone who is invited gets one shot at it, and so it's their decision on how they'll do it. J1's set was stunningly executed and I know next month's entry will sound completely different.

i would let j1 answer that as we both can't do it for him as we simply do not know.

Strange. I enjoyed every track and it was perfectly mixed, yet I still made a peep. Go fig'.

But you're right. At the end of the day, it's the participants' choice where they wish to take their mix. I'm just expressing my hopes to see more genre eclecticism in the future.

sorry if my post seemed a little controversial, it was not meant with the intention to flame.

we are pretty much on the same page when we say that the people involved will do this as they see fit, as was done with the first installment.

I'm with you on this. The first entry was an excellent set, but I would love to hear more random as well.

I'm here. And with me is the mix from our second player. You probably know him from his excellent productions, his DJ sets and his unerring devotion to telling newbs they've posted in the wrong forum. It's got to be:

Mr Mystery

01. Pink Floyd - Echoes
What's there to say about Floyd that hasn't already been said? Being the godfathers of prog, they introduced me to the wonderful world of 20 minute tracks as well.

02. BT - Firewater
Hands down my favourite BT track, although unfortunately rather poorly mastered (in case you were thinking I was causing those distorted peaks).

03. Jean-Michel Jarre - Millions Of Stars
Generally, I'm not that into Jarre (shock!) but this track just strikes a chord for me. Hauntingly beautiful.

04. Oasis - Champagne Supernova
Hearing this for the first time as a pre-teen has to have been one of the most intense musical experiences of my life.

05. Apollo 440 - The Machine In The Ghost
I never did figure @440 out - sometimes they produce some utter toss and in the next minute something absolutely beautiful like this.

06. Sasha - Baja
In my opinion the weakest track on the Xpander EP was Xpander itself - I could had placed any of the other 3 here but this one seemed to fit best.

07. Orbital - Style
I could had easily just slapped the entire 'The Middle Of Nowhere'-album to this mix but in order to keep it under 80 minutes I had to narrow it down to just one... I don't think I've listened to any EDM album as much as that one.

08. Yello - On Track
Yello were way ahead of their time when they did the 'Pocket Universe'-album. This is one of the reasons I ever got into EDM. Thanks for playing this to me, dad.

09. The Crystal Method - Keep Hope Alive
Again, just about any track from the 'Vegas'-album would had made the cut, but this is the one that really got me into producing breaks/big beat.

10. The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel
I'm not even sure I have words for this. Perfection defined.

11. Junkie XL - Billy Club
The intensity of early Junkie XL tracks/live shows even impressed The Prodigy. Too bad he went on to become what he is now...

12. The Prodigy - Climbatize
Speaking of The Prodigy... is that not the best bassline ever?

13. Hybrid - Finished Symphony
These type of tracks only come by once every blue moon... absolutely beautiful. I don't know what it is about mixing traditional instruments with electronic music but it just works for me almost every time.

It was a bit of a challenge to get these in one set, my taste in music has always been ridiculously varied. That's why this one focuses more on the tracks and less on the mixing.

Haven't posted in here in a while. Jupiter's set was tremendous. I've listened to it three times already, excellent work.

Now I'm in on yours, Mystery. Even if I'm not a big Oasis fan

Downloading, can't wait to hear it.

I'm really surprised at the yello track, and it is cool that you didn't pick the most obvious one. I can't say there is anything that i have never heard on here, but i can say that beyond oasis i liked everything else on here at some point or another

it will be nice to revisit these.

I can't say Champagne Supernova doesn't stick out in this mix but it was something I simply had to get in there.
