Besides, BTG's life is like a gag-reel of involuntary bodily functions. I stole that, but it completely fucking applies.
I assumed people's solutions/explanations were signs of caring 
Well seeing as how the only logical options for him are to either apologize to her or to turn her inside out with a box cutter, and nobody has suggested these yet, I'm inclined to believe everyone is just fucking with him. But you may just be right...

Come on man that is a pretty weak story about insane girlfriends. You could embellish quite a bit and it'd still be believable.
How about she was out all night drinking and doing blow then came back to your place while you weren't there, tried to fuck all of your roommates, attack everyone in the house and round it up with a nice attempted suicide. Then you could go on about how you don't know true love until you have to remove the lock from the bathroom door and go to the hospital cause you're losing too much blood from the bite taken from your neck.
