Trance is like a vintage 80s Member's Only jacket. There is an era to which it will undoubtedly renowned for. There was a single time and place, in all of human history for both the Member's Only jacket, and for trance, to have proliferated.
//end (do not read the rest)
Both rest heavily upon the psychology of a time-specific generation. The Member's Only jacket came at a time of recession in the United States and a growth in technology - technology for which many of the average Americans could not afford. Thousands of dollars for a portable phone, peaking a grand for a "compact disc reader." The gap between classes was apparent by material objects, and this is where the Member's Only Jacket comes in. A sleek, stylish and very affordable jacket that can be seen for miles with a slogan that screams "i belong here, i belong anywhere."
20 years later, Members Only was resurrected, and it was sold in Abercrombie and Fitch (that means it's for douches).
The same goes for Trance. It, too, came at the most perfect time, a time of "climax" in the all of the world. Nearing the end of a millenium, and perhaps the end of civilization was best represented by the climaxes interpreted to us through the likes of ferry corsten, dj tiesto and Nalin & Kane. The heavy reliance on the digital revolution which in turn could have been our demise turned many alike to the ear of the synthesizer.
Hello machine, do you want to kill us? Let me hear what you have to say. Oliver Leib grew up with this machine, Armin Van Buuren grew up with this machine, we all did. We were all curious and, like the first transmission in a game of "he said she said", we heard it loud and clear. Great music, great sounds, a great vibe and a GREAT MESSAGE.
Years down the road, this game of "he said, she said" has transformed the message of trance, distorted it, into a very ugly statement. A commercial monument of absolute rubbish.
One should not be embarrassed to have listened to trance. Don't deny where you came from, we all existed on the eve of December 31, 1999. But do be mad at the brutal rape and sodomy that occured on that night that made trance a cold, lonely and forever traumatized victim.
Perhaps we are all, in a very tiny bit, to blame. We saw this and sat back and let trance forever accrue this stigma. It's like that disease on court TV where you watch someone screaming for help and you just go about your business.
I feel for trance. I really do.
couldn't have said it better

So what do all these producers who don't want to label their music as trance, call their music?
It's not like I liked trance but in France, "la trance" is pronounced the same way "un trans", "un trans" = a shemale.

^ Yeah, as if there are no techno and house DJs throwing off their shirts and generally acting ridiculous.

three minute breakdowns are pussy - if i don't have enough time to get to the back, buy a water for $5, buy more pills, nudge my way back to the front, & find a etard ho to grope and/or makeout with, the song has failed me.
Because the producers who says they are not making trance know this music today has nothing to do with idea of trance music from his beginning. So the best way to call it is to say it's "electronic dance music".
Or can you name any tracks these days that have entrancing atmosphere like those timeless classics had:

In interviews they are often very eager to point out that they do not listen to trance. How often do you hear or read that a producer listens to trance music? I for one can't recall it at all through all the years. I remember in an interview with MIKE he said that he liked Justin Timberlake alot. Some producers don't even want to label there music as trance (PvD etc). People in other scenes have no problem with this but trance people seem to be embarrased with being associated with trance music. Are you ashamed to mention that you listen to trance? Or have you heard of any trance producer that have ever said that he listen trance? Would be nice to hear some thoughts on this. |
It is fascinating to me, in the first place, that people are bitching about Trance on a site called TRANCE Addict. And not to be confrontational, but I don't really understand why the people who prefer other EDM genres are even registered on here.
Moving on, however. It's also very annoying how almost every discussion turns into an argument about something called "quality" Trance or even more vaguely - "quality" Electronic Music. With that, of course, the names of AvB, Tiesto, PvD and alike seem to always be brought up. Now don't get me wrong - I myself can't stand DJ Sammy or Basshunter, as well as some of the other cheese that one sees labeled as "Trance" on beatport and elsewhere. But it strikes me more as a negativity coming from DJs that consider themselves "not mainstream", meaning: not nearly as successful and/or talented as the big guys. I believe there is NOTHING noble about choosing to play the most obscure and unknown tracks one can find and, as a consequence, boring the crowd to death (as Tiesto actually seems to do recently with his whole new whiteboy indietronica style). People go to the clubs to hear what THEY want to hear - not what YOU want to play. So, if your track lists consist mostly of the tracks that none of the big guys of Trance ever played or will ever play in their radio shows or live sets, or include in their compilations, the chances are that you are going to be stuck on TA typing hateful posts for a long time. Good luck to all.
P.S. It is entirely idiotic to not admit that you like something, when, in fact, you do. And if your purpose in life is to seem "cool", you should probably purchase a big-ass mouse hat and start producing dull, slow, soulless [Electro-]House music.
