It's just like we Brazilians trying to tell everyone Santos-Dumont invented the airplane... I've heard all sorts of conspiracies, ranging from a failure to recognise him as the inventor because of his skin colour and his sexual orientation, to American pride regarding the Wright Brothers.
In any case, I still think he did a much better job than those nonetheless talented bicycle builders.
