Wow there seems to be a lot of people that want to attack me on here who've never met me and then attack me again for defending my position. Seems like a lot of player haters to me...

dude, you don't know!? TA is the place where Chappelle got the idea to come up with the Playa haters ball episode...

chappelle used to be an active user until he posted something about dave dresden and that was the end of him.

Hey, I was looking at the Roland JX synths just now and was wondering if the editing is all done through the buttons and the menu rather than any knobs or sliders? Is that tedious or do you find it fairly intuitive?

Also, have you used the Juno 106 / 6 / 60 line, and if so were they any good? I found a few of those at reasonable prices on EBay recently.

The JX line are all a nightmare to program without the optional PG800 programmer for the JX 8p, MKS 70 and Super JX (I think it's the PG800, double check me). The JX 3p uses the PG200. The presets are pretty cool, but obviously you want the programmer. However I like the sound of these synths a lot!

As for the Juno 106 it's very cool sounding synth, a classic, and easy to program with the built in sliders but the DCOs will distort if the VCA is set wrong. The Juno 60 and 6 are similar. The 6 has no patch memory storage but might have VCOs instead of DCOs (Check VSE). The 60 has DCOs and patch memory storage but no midi. However I've heard some people claim that the 60 sounds better than the 106. That may just be folklore, I don't hear much of a difference myself.

Bang for the buck I'd get a Juno 106. Only drawback is the voice chips do tend to go out, which is annoying... and they're getting harder and harder to get.

Cheers,

-Mikael

According to VSE they are all DCOs.

Maybe I'm a bit odd but I hardly ever keep patches saved unless I'm working on a specific track, so memory doesn't matter that much to me. I have been looking at all three of the Junos lately and thinking about snapping one up because some of my favorite artists have used them and I like what I hear on demos.

Yeah I remember Joel (Deadmau5) mentioning that a while ago in the production forum. That's what sucks about these old synths, but I'm willing to put up with it for the sound!

Thanks for all the info, sorry to talk your ear off with all these questions.

While your here (and I know it's not technically your project), what's going on with the Andain album?

Posted by Demoted on Nov-10-2009 03:54:

About the music, it does sound quite like Some Polyphony. I think the chord progression sounds similar, though not exact.

I'd still venture it is a coincidence. Kinda like Purple Haze - Eden probably coincidentally sounds like The Sky Was Pink. I doubt Doorn drew inspiration from Fake, though I could be wrong.

Last time I spoke to Josh he said he still planned to finish the production and release the album. I've heard most of the demos and there are some pretty amazing songs actually. Ones I like even better than Beautiful things, which is a great track imo. I really hope an agreement can be reached and this music can come out, it needs to be released but of course this is out of my hands...
On a side note Dave and I are writing new material with Dave Penner of Andain. We have a track we all wrote featuring Nadia Ali on vocals that we're finishing up now.

I'd get a 106 in good shape and then buy up as many working voice chips as you can. We plan to do the same thing. You can't go wrong with the 106 it's an amazing synth for the money. You can easily pick one up last I checked for $300-$500.

anyone ever stop to think that this has been drave dresden all along, posing as his new production partner?

Posted by woscar on Nov-10-2009 07:24:

More importantly...why does Dave Dresden always need a "production partner"?

We were a remix duo until recently, and our first few originals that we wrote (some with Dave Penner, Nadia Ali and one with John Debo) were vocal tracks. I'd say that for both of us working with vocals is what comes naturally for us. Instrumentals are a new thing for us as a duo, Redhead being our first. I will say that love it or hate it the club mix works well when we play it out. With that said we're always striving to be better with every track we do.
Cheers,

Ha ha ha, well I guess you may never know... but I assure you I'm a real person. You can see my photos and bio on our site. I've been friends with both Dave and Josh for 10+ years. I've been producing, engineering and remixing since long before either of them wrote their first track.

Why not? lots of people work in pairs. It's whatever someone likes really. Some people work better alone, some people like to work in a duo or a band...

We're only doing some limited appearances together at this time. We've done 2 gigs and I've been with him at about 10 shows over the past year. The last one was at Monday Night Social in LA recently. We spent the day mixing at our friends studio, did an interview and then we all went out to Dave's gig.

Lol, I'm just answering questions, and I'm not the one with my DJ Mix posted in my signature.

Yeah I've looked at it, but if I want to go for a poly four voices seems a little too limited to me. Also I like my synths to have more knobs or sliders. How would you say the sound compares to your Prophet 08?

Maybe the Little Phatty has spoiled me, with every button and knob having a single clear function and minimal menu futzing. I love this thing. Obviously as a mono synth with only two oscs and one filter it has limited functionality, but what it does, it does excellently to my ears.

What's the point of a post like that? All you're doing is trying to blatantly stir the shit. Why waste your time? Move on.

I don't mind the 4 voices because I usually work on a patch, write something, do some automation and print it as audio. But you're right it's more limited with fewer voices and less knobs. There is a computer based programmer that you can get and there are some features on the tetra not found on the P8, sub oscilators and distortion are two that come to mind.

I love the little phatty, but for some reason we don't have one lol, although some of the presets do remind me of a certain mouse

Cheers,

-Mikael
