Both epic, but I though they were 1990.

If 1990 counts, then so does 1979, and i throw in Apocalypse Now.

not only "of the 80's", though. More like "ever".

You can't call Apocalypse Now an 80s movie. It's your archetypical 70s movie, where an auteur director is given complete creative control by the studio and ends up going massively over-budget. This kind of film was comprehensively killed off by Michael Cimino's disastrous Heaven's Gate in 1980, and the 80s became a decade of tightly controlled, highly profitable studio films in the Jaws template.

If 1979 counts, I will toss in the original Alien.

I'm sorry, but Scanners is a pretty crap film when you get past the exploding heads. Definitely not the best Cronenberg film of the 80s.

The Fly.

Oh not at all.

I can't help but love it in all of its cheesy glory though.

No idea how the main actor even got past the audition phase either. That guy was straight up awful.

Okay. I'm still not getting my head around this "80s cheese" concept properly. And I agree about Stephen Lack. My brother has the theory he's supposed to be emotionally blank, because his character has never had any real human contact. I just think it's terrible acting.

...half the reason [most] people rave about 80s movie is the campy, cheesy aspect of them rather than artistic excellence.

Or to put it another way: it seems like a lot of people consider a good '80s movie to be one that you can spend as much time making fun of as you do actually watching it.

Oh it's definitely terrible acting.

I'll have to spend a little time thinking about what 80's films I really do enjoy though and consider well made.

It means we are fully aware that they lack any artistic merit, but it's the shit we watched growing up so it holds a special or sentimental value for us.

this reminds me, i hate it when movie posters dont put the actors name above/below their picture. How hard is it to do it right? I know some actors get 'top billing' or whatever but come on it looks retarded to me.
