You're right, fans often know what they're talking about. The thing is, depending on the venue, the percentage of the ticket buying public who is knowledgeable and there just for the music is relatively small. When you're really into this "scene" (any scene really), surround yourself with people with similar tastes, and consistently participate in an internet forum dedicated to it, it is easy to slip into the impression that most people who go out to party at these types of events share the same devotion to it as we do.

The majority of people at the larger events are there just for a good time, which is fine. It's not that the DJ is dumbing it down to be condescending, just that they have to please both the heads and the general public as well.
