Coachella pays its artists alright. Some acts reportedly costing millions over the years. Either way, they pay their artists and often put a clause in their contract that they can't play near where Coachella is for so long. I am not sure if that's on an artist-to-artists basis or if it's standard in all their contracts though. But if the artist does have the clause, don't expect to see 'em in any club in SoCal anytime soon.

Not necessarily true. ZOE is playing on Saturday at Coachella, and they're also playing at the Glasshouse in Pomona on Monday.

In the past, Cafe Tacuba has the done the same.

If anything, the clause might just be for the headliners.

the standard Coachella contract negotiation excludes SoCal shows within a specific time period right before and after... but exceptions can always be negotiated...

having said that you typically won't see a big name act or dj play LA right around Coachella due to that restriction.... but they can play SF or Vegas...

That's quite an exaggeration. There's a big difference between a rave in the Mojave desert on BLM land and a commercial event held on a polo field in Coachella.

Video of a REAL desert rave back in '97 - '98, a few years before the first Coachella Music Festival:

I went to a rave at the Polo Fields before. It was way back when there weren't any houses around. It was literary in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, the first Coachella was headlined by those big rave acts Rage Against the Machine, Beck & Tool.

Oh, wait...

Well, than here's another exception. JAY-Z is performing at the Staples Center on March 26. That's about 2 1/2 weeks before Coachella.

bookoo, like cookoo but for money or bills. I hear the phrase bookoo bucks alot from people born between 1960 and 75.

Garbage to me is crap that I don't like

Probably because Jay-Z won't be the main headliner for Friday night. It has happened in the past; when they announce the second batch of performers they've bumped certain main headliners down one or two pegs. I've had a feeling that they'll bump him since I first saw his name on the lineup.

"Bookoo" is not a word. Bas is correct, the proper word for the phrase you mentioned is "beaucoup bucks". The word stems from the French language, and means "an abundance".

that tour was booked long before Jay-Z was asked to play Coachella.... i've noticed nationwide tours seem to be exceptions to the LA booking exclusion rule (except when they use Coachella as the 'LA' date for that tour).

Nope. It was called Armageddon 97. I still have the flyer.

ah. didn't realize they did raves at the Polo fields before Coachella/Nocturnal... are you sure it was on the exact same location? reason i'm asking is i remember the local residents hated the bass pounding all nite from Nocturnal and said no more after that per my recollection... so i'm a bit surprised to hear that wasn't the first rave on the Polo fields

funny thing is i still have the full-page color ad for Nocturnal from the LA Weekly....

yeah- it wouldn't surprise me if we got another headliner for friday. Namely, the Beastie Boys. Given Jay's current status in hip hop I wonder if they'd really drop him down under the Beasties, though.

Beastie Boys are probably in a similar situation to Princes -- they waited to announce him because he wasn't sure if he'd play due to surgery...and now they wait to announce the Beastie Boys because there's still uncertainty due to illness. That's kind of what it feels like to me.

Posted by idoru on Jan-21-2010 00:21:

It won't be the Beastie Boys.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Jan-21-2010 01:10:

source?

Posted by TheQuiz on Jan-21-2010 02:12:

I heard a rumor that The Rolling Stones are going to be the suprise headliner but their are always rumors about who might get added.

I thought for sure the Beastie Boys where going to be there becuase of all the hype before the lineup came out.

I have no source, I'm just basing my opinion off of years of reading speculative Coachella forum threads and news articles and then comparing them to the actual lineups. Since I was right about Underworld...

... I'll go double or nothing for Beastie Boys.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Jan-21-2010 03:14:

it's easy enough to say someone won't play. what's your best guess for who will then? beastie boys were rumored for a while...they're just one addition that wouldn't entirely surprise me, that's all.

Because they've been heavily rumored every year since they played there in 2003, and every year it hasn't come true. Not to mention the whole bit about Yauch's cancer. The odds are stacked against them.

Muse is in SF on the 14th. They make exceptions like that quite a bit. I could've sworn that Coachella was part of the Delta Heavy tour as well as San Diego and Los Angeles...but people keep saying I'm wrong

Delta Heavy was in '02, and they played at Coachella in '02, so...

wow thanks for the insight. incredible. in my previous post i noted that the it all feels like a familiar situation - that perhaps they're holding off on the announcement due to illness.

Workin on the new mixes as we speak. What songs would YOU choose to represent some of your favorite artists on the lineup?
