so thats my life generally in a nutshell right now. im told that having a baby will sort me out, who knows.. maybe it will.. maybe it wont

propranolol is shit. it does nothing. citalopram is also blah. it was like 'yeah, it's not as bad as it was, but what the fuck is the point of it'

Honestly mate you should try doing a few things I have been, it's worked for me. Eating lots of fresh veg/fruit, cut out the booze as much, the fags too if you can, use your mental strength and get some exercise, it'll be painful at first but it's so worth it in the end.

lol you know what ian.. i know exactly what needs to be done.. i know that excercise will sort me out.. but, one of 'my triggers' is having an excessive heart rate and being worried that i cant conrol it, which leads to another panic attack. thats what fucking sucks.. cos ive tried this all before

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-14-2010 20:48:

and make sure you are followed by him/her. You should be popping in the docs every few weeks to keep him up to date and tell him how it is working. Doctors can't know it isn't unless you tell them

I don't take anti depressants at all anymore, but at one point in my life they helped me take control of myself (had quit drugs, flown the coop and so on). It took 3 different meds before i found the right one from me, so just keep motivated and know that there are solutions, and once you find them you will be better off.

You don't have to take these things forever(in most cases).

I know you're not referring to me, but when I told my doctor about what happened he asked if I would like to try with something else and I declined and just continued with therapy for a while. I just don't like meds, I know they can help but I feel like I get more benefit out of a session than with medication.

I know several people who are the same way, and I know others who swear by the meds. Everyone's different.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-14-2010 20:52:

i wasn't talking about you at all, but by the op's posts it is quite obvious that he needs the help. I know i am not a doctor either.

i took these btw if you want alternative suggestions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venlafaxine

they are great for anxiety (at least were to me) A big factor in preventing panic attacks is learning to tell yourself you are having one and not dying. You could also ask for relaxation techniques (breathing, counting backwards..and so on) that would equip you better.

It took a long time to get better at doing this.

ask your gp for cbt jay. it will help you mentally.

Posted by [N]k|[Z] on Jan-14-2010 20:56:

ah well, i have read up on a lot of stuff over the past 2 years and it all makes perfect sense.. but appears to have not worked. ive tried breathing techniques, beta blockers, SRU's, hypnotherapy at $100 a session. but i appear to be no better off.
i know an attack is just an attack and im not dieing, 95% of the time i can stop them from becoming bad ones.
i just cant beat this fucking thing and i dont know why lol

Posted by enydo on Jan-14-2010 20:58:

If you do indeed have an anxiety disorder or whatever it is, you can't ever really "beat" it. You can only get better at dealing with it when you need to.

i did ian.. i asked or it before i got maried, cos i didnt think id be able to go through with the wedding.. i couldnt picture myself axctually making it to the ceremony, but they didnt sort the therapy out for me in time. since i got back from my honeymoon they phoned me and offered me some sessions, bu theyre in completely inaccessable places for me, at stupid times, so i didnt go through with it.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-14-2010 21:00:

you can and you will if you don't stop trying.

it is not like you are schizophrenic or anything, millions of people suffer from anxiety/depression and get better.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-14-2010 21:07:

there ya go

ironically enough, when i had anxiety problems fresh air often helped so smoking outside for the win

Posted by enydo on Jan-14-2010 21:10:

Haha, I'm pretty sure that's where my vice actually came from. Relaxes me greatly.

The main thing, in my mind, for handling and beating anxiety, depression, or whatever, is discipline. You have to want it and you have to really pour yourself into everything you do in life. Even if it feels like the last thing in the world you want to do, just try and be a little more passionate about things. That always helped me a bit, who knows.

jay i was on citalopram for post partum depression so i know what it's like. they had to give me sleeping pills for 4 weeks to counter the effects it would initially have being in my system. I would have said "fuck it" but at the time my marriage was falling apart and i was really relying on them to help me and sure enough, after 4 weeks they sorted themselves out and it did work really well for me. I took them for a year and then got off of them (which wasn't easy either, i had ciggarettes to help me with that) but it may not be the best for you either. I don't know what you can do to help you cope, i hope you find something. Having a baby sure as hell won't make it go away, the next 2 years are going to be pretty crazy and stressful.. but thankfully they also provide you with an amazing experience that forces you to let your balls drop and be a man. You will love your baby more then anything else in the world i am sure of it. I guess i'm just saying whoever told you having a baby might help obviously doesn't have kids.. i wish all the best for you and your wife, she's really going to need your support.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-14-2010 21:13:

i still take sleeping pills, but that is because of problems with post concussion syndrome stemming from sports injuries.

I don't use them every night though and never on weekends.

Posted by wienerschnitzel on Jan-14-2010 21:16:

do they make your mouth taste like you actually spent the night giving blowjobs to robots? i could NEVER get that metalic taste out of my mouth.. nothing tasted the same, not even water

which is why i dont want to get on more meds, like strong meds. my life as it has been for the last 2 and a half years, has been a series of tests big and small, and i just have to deal with them. but i think i am gonna go to the doctors and see what else is on the market for me. gonna have to bite the bullet on this one.

in all honesty too.. i hate babies. i like kids, from around 18 months and so on... but babies i hate. so i guess the thought of having a baby for 18 months, is worrying lol

by the way did you sort a name out for your little boy yet?

i don't get the metallic taste even though the medication i take is known for them. I find that that if i take them with a glass of milk and drink water i'm fine.

these btw:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zopiclone

2 of these and in 30 minutes i'm too asleep to know what my mouth tastes like
