Don't understand what? What more do you want explained when somebody says "A marriage should be between a man and a woman"?

Says who?

Marriage is not just a legal contract, or a business merger, it is a symbolic construct that marks a milestone in a person's life. It is a celebration and declaration of two people's love and commitment to each other. One can't just replace that with "a standard package of legal deals".

It's not a priviledge but a notion that all people possess. Everyone has a right to celebrate and observe any ritual or belief that's important to them, therefore, everyone has a right to be married.

If you didn't create this thread in order to write a school paper I'm going to have to punch you in the tits.

LOL I haven't been to school in years. I was just shooting the breeze with a friend and this topic came up, so I decided to make a thread.

Misguided? As though someone against gay marriage were incapable of genuinely thinking, even with a bit of extrinsic influence (we are all influenced, for that matter), that gay marriage is unnatural.

Look, neither I nor you are going to agree. You have your views, and I have mine. I am not going to harp upon the "man + woman" issue anymore because, like I said, we're going to arrive at that impasse. You think it's irrelevant whether a man and woman or man and man validates a marriage (and therefore everything that comes with a marriage), and I think it's relevant.

Sooooo..... yeah.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Jan-27-2010 02:53:

What if we just kept the word marriage for men and women and used the word "egairram" for when people of the same sex would like a legally binding union that means whatever to them that they want it to mean? That way we don't have to corrupt any traditions with aberrations.

Then the correct word I should have used (and I'm not saying this for convenience's sake) is "is" instead of "should". And I never (at least, not intentionally) meant to imply that marriage is akin to "legal deals".

That's not what I'm saying at all. There just seems to be a large gap in your thinking that you are either unable or unwilling to address.

Would it be such a leap for you to trust me when I say I'm being completely honest in my opinion and that I'm not coercing within me some reasoning that would automatically make me have a sobering epiphany?

edit:

and that I've honestly weighed both ends of the argument and still arrive to my conviction?

Why do you think I'm questioning the integrity of your reasoning? I've no doubt that these are your honest and genuine thoughts you've arrived at yourself. I just think there's an obvious hole in your reasoning that you won't talk about.

when most people talk so much shit about gay people like EricB it is usually because they are hiding their own homosexuality so it comes out as hostility. its ok EricB, just come out you'll be much happier.

I can assure you there isn't. I'm not one to keep any thing pent up for convenience's sake.

But I'm sure you won't take my word for it. So let's keep it at that.

Again, I don't think you're lying to yourself. For fuck's sake. I'm pointing out the glaring problem in your logic and you just aren't answering me. You're just deflecting it by constantly repeating how you're not lying to yourself. Frankly, I'm beginning to suspect insecurity in that regard just because you keep pushing it without any provocation.

Take note, Renzo. You have a challenger.

When you word your sentence "I just think there's an obvious hole in your reasoning that you won't talk about" what am I supposed to think when you put "won't" which implies that I'm unwilling to address some fault in my logic--will not address. If I'm unwilling to address something, I'm unwilling to be honest, which would be, by some extension ,I'm sure, lying to myself.

Furthermore, I'm not addressing it, because, doh!, I don't see it, even though it's, as you say, a glaring problem. I'm certain that if it were as obvious as you say, then I'd have no problem in addressing it.

And, please, I'm not insecure.

Well, do you feel that there might be a hole or not?

You said yourself that marriage is a union and should have trust, honesty, love, understanding (etc..)... Nothing homosexuals can't accomplish.

It is currently a privelege allowed only to heterosexual couples. There is no justifiable basis for this, there is no discernable gain to this, and it is a vile display of prejudice and discrimination.

Now, get back to trying to defend it.

And no, I don't think homosexuals are filth. But when you really break it down, homosexuality, whether you think so or not, is in one sense or another unnatural.

North Americans seem to have a pragmatic view about what is 'unnatural' when it suits them, its simply a product of a demented society which considers sex shameful and violence is a form of entertainment.
