Were the 1992 post-recession budget winter olympics so memorable?

For those who don't know the Pedobear story...I give my naive Poles a SILVER medal for this one;

Yesterday alone I got 120,000 (with about one third coming from Poland) and today is looking like it will top that by at least double." He added: "Maybe I'll just keep the money to help cover the price gouging, raised taxes, disappearing arts funding, and all the other "benefits" we Vancouverites are getting from the games that are kicking me in the back pocket." The four genuine mascots of the Vancouver Olympics and Paralympics were inspired by traditional native creatures.

Because a German paper used the pic in the KIDS section of the newspaper, so I give the Germans the GOLD.


Die Glocke ("The Bell") has also published the picture... in the children's section (Spielplatz means "playground") !

That's a crappy excuse at best, the games were budgeted about 6 years ago, int the middle of the biggest booms BC economy has ever seen. And that money wasn't enough with a shit load of over spendings left and right, so more of it was added.

And the West hasn't really been affected by recent economic turmoil and it's already recovering what little it has lost with the financial crisis...

We're not China or Greece, but Canada has done alot for the rest of the world, and it's a great time to show off and present a modern image to the world. Honnestly, i didnt see the whole thing, so if they did in fact highlighted those achievements then my apologies.

Call me cynical, but the sheer amount of native imagery is starting to look exploitative. We're talking about people that we shit on 364 days a year, and yet when we want some culture from them, we're all of a sudden their best friend.

Hmmm... makes me think of a drug dealer or a pimp.

As for the ceremonies...I thought they were good...the whale scene was absolutely stunning.

yeah, just watched Kearney (it was during her run)...dammit...American on Canadian soil to a Canadian artist's tracks.

Was really hoping Heil won. Guess we'll have to wait.

short track speed skating was so exciting today! love it! so unpredictable.

it reminds me of those proline commercials where you can win on something crazy happening on the field.

I don't get it why they don't go full speed off the bat. they sit and chill for the first 2 laps...

anyone else get really annoyed by the american's after the moguls? Jennifer Hiel handled that very well and very proudly. She is a true Canadian and showed a lot of class...unlike the baboons she was competing with. American's really just dig themselves deeper and deeper every time they are in the limelight.

I wouldn't say they were baboons, but I know what you mean. I felt so sad for Jenn cuz this was her chance to make history and I think she wanted it more for all of us than for herself. All the american sites are posting:

Kearney upsets Heil
etc.

instead of Kearney wins gold, Bahrke bronze.

They love sticking it to us, so this one pisses me off a bit, but full congratulations to Kearney.

I echo your sentiments about how Heil handled it. She won a silver and inside to her that's a loss. At the Olympics!!! True champion.

I just hope we rip it up in women's speed skating (which I think we're poised to) so that colbert nation can take a seat.

It's about conserving your energy and also the tactical aspect. Since you can't see who's behind you, the pack generally stays together, gets a rhythm, and then someone will "make a move". The last two or three (depending on the distance), they start to crank it.

In the one where Ohno won silver, the three Koreans kind of pulled a cheap shot move going to the inside right at the end but it ended up robbing them of a podium sweep (two of them collided). they got the gold though, held ohno off. Sadly Hamelin got knocked down in his semi. He def would have gotten a medal in the final.

huh?

i am honestly the last person to defend the americans but in this case i have to.

why would I be annoyed? she won the event. fair and square. there wasn't even a question who had a better run. jennifer had a good run but the american was beyond amazing. she beat her time and did better jumps and better moguls. if felt like heil took it easy and was hoping the american would fuck up.

i didn't see any crazy celebrating or in your face antics. the american girls were just happy they won at the olympics just like anyone else would be. especially since the american girl that won has a tendency of choking in competition.

the other canadian girl, who had that beautiful jump who fell in the middle, that's who i felt bad for because she had a real chance of taking it with that trick, if only she didn't fall. she was going so fast she would have beat everyone's time.

Someone should have handed Jenn a Canadian flag... or she should have dropped her skis and have borrowed a flag from a fan
