have you tried the roll off ? it isn't a very steep curve.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Aug-28-2010 18:17:

who the fuck invented bassports anyway? it sucks.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Aug-28-2010 18:58:

lol um Newton ?

the air has to go somewhere.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Aug-28-2010 19:05:

no, air is compressable. giving a much tighter bass. but demands better amp of course.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Aug-28-2010 19:21:

your cone moves, it pushes air, it has to go somewhere. Tighter bass ? What does that even mean ?

Posted by DJ RANN on Aug-28-2010 19:26:

Palm (you know I'm never going to call you by that silly number), you're listening position is way off, and you're going to run in to the same problem with any speakers that have good bass response, so don't blame the HS80's.

Firstly, there's no toe in on your speakers. You need to find a way to angle them in, which will also help with the bass port at the back.

Next, move them slightly out from the wall - even another six inches will help.

Next, your triangle is way off - from the perspective of that photo it looks like your distance from the speakers is around twice that of the distance between them. It going to seriously fuck up your mid range - in fact I think that is EXACTLY the problem with your mid range right there. You''re so far away, your cranking them up. As bass is (in SPL terms) the strongest part of the signal you're hearing a lot of bass at that distance.

Do me a favor: as an experiment, move the speakers away from the wall, toe them in and sit closer so you're making a perfect triangle. Now remove all the dialled in settings (rolloff etc) turn them all the way down and bring them up to nice listening gain.

I think you'll have a very different listening experience to what you hear right now

Fuck this is why engineers shouldn't compose (and composers shouldn't give engineering advice.)

Compression and rarefaction! It aint just air moving.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Aug-28-2010 20:04:

so the air being pushed from my bass ports are actually fairy dust ? I'm quite familiar with how sound waves are created but without a medium to move, your bass isn't going to be projected. Which is why you need that escape hatch.

Cool, a cock fight I can spectate instead of partake in.

i'l fight anyone anywhere on any topic on any side of said topic. Engage Kismet7 logic. bzzzzzzzz te te. Alright, i'm ready djRann.

Despite being a c@nt, you're tricky to dislike.

Fight? It's on. Get your lube out. Shit, actually strike that, I just remembered you're like 9ft tall

Fuck it, it's still on. So no, that's no fairy dust coming out your speakers, just crap music! Ding Dong.....

[boringtechnicalreasoning] No I said it's not just air moving because the air particles are actually being compressed and rarefied to create soundwaves. The ports are to allow this action to happen. If it was just air moving it would be a fan[/boringtechnicalreasoning]

Even more LOL. What going on with TA today? Everyone has been at the koolaid and I'm liking it.

well at least agree that the propagation of the wave mimics the movement of air. That is what I meant. The easier access you allow that air to move, the easier the propagation. Kinda like when Cryohphonik's wife wears the mini skirt, the easier the penetration. Zing.

snowball effect bitches oh and this is where your logic fails. What else does Kismet usually say.

Oh noes! You has Kismetz. Don't forget fairy tales. Lots of fairy tales.

And to think this thread almost never happened.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Aug-28-2010 23:03:

thanks Rann, I already tried various positions of the speakers and it helps alot to do as you said; listening position closer to the speakers, speakers longer from the wall etc. so Im not blaming the speakers (though the high mid is still lacking imo), also i know about these things from before. but its just not practically possible to let them stand like that so unfortunately it will never work with big speakers in my current location (or maybe ever). i only have 50m2 to live in and the stereo/studio cant take it all. thank good i didnt go with the JBLs lol, i would have just given up on everything after that. i need to move, i fucking hate this place. its been a bitch for my creativity for 3,5 years now.

oh and u can call me Palm or whatever u want. ive changed the name again lol.

now it looks like this:

much MUCH better monitors for my needs. the genelecs are build like rockets. i have total control over bass, and midrange is fucking clear as hell, i can hear errors in many of my reference tracks. now i just need a proper desk and maybe hook up my sub.

Posted by tehlord on Sep-01-2010 14:36:

Yeah but do they go loud enough for teh parteh?

Posted by Stephen Wiley on Sep-01-2010 14:37:

you really need to learn the importance of creating a triangle with you and the 2 speakers

that also looks pretty damn far away for some small near fields

Posted by Zak McKracken on Sep-01-2010 14:51:

1. no i doubt they will play loud and sound good at the same time, but i think they handle it so they wont break, they seems to be pretty serious shit build wise. i can hook up my sub when theres a party.

2. this is not how its going to be when i buy a desk. this is just how they are placed at the moment, and im sitting on the floor right in front of them to test them lol. I might put them on the stands i used for the yamahas to get wider sound and a better triangle + height for my current sitting position but as im supposed to sit at a desk im not sure i bother right now.

edit: did some testing now, they do actually play rather loud, but they get abit harch. might be better/soften up after they have been used a while though.

Don't worry, those little puppies are built like tanks, but they do get a bit screachy when you max them out. I'm glad you found a solution but I think in the very long term, maybe when you have a new place, and you've got a studio area or at least decent listening position, you're going to be hurting for monitors that have better bass response.

I know you've got the sub but......me hates them subs.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Sep-01-2010 19:23:

i probably wont have a dedicated room for many years as i plan to stay in the city a while (if not forever), so I hope my mixes will translate well using these. i fucking love the sound already at the same time as i discover new details in my reference cds and mp3s. when i move (next fall probably) the production desk will most likely end up in the bedroom so there wont probably be use for bigger monitors then either, or maybe a step up to the 8030 or focal cms50 or even solos. at that point im anyway gonna get a decent pair of floorstander hifis in the livingroom for second control and regular listening, like some serious Tannoy DCs and maybe even do the final mixdown there (use the hifi as mains). as this is a hobby it should be enough, atleast im happy now.
