She hasn't truly campaigned for as long as I've been alive. I've not seen a single Hazel sign or campaign announcement from her in my entire life. What scares me is, if she's dethroned... it'll be someone like Carolyn Parrish as mayor after her... Which is fine... I need a reason to move up north anyway.

If it takes him 4 years to destroy the unions and never be elected again, he'll have done his job.

It's too late... the Transitway was built while the city was still small and expanding around a city with a large green belt. It was cheaper than building a subway system. OC Transpo also had slinky buses decades before any other major city.

Ford really doesnt like streetcars in any form, and trots out the expected complaints about how construction fouls up businesses, how streetcars delay traffic and thereby create more pollution. Indeed, he would shut down our streetcar network and sell our new cars elsewhere to recoup whatever money could be had. The platform material says Ford would remove some streetcars, but according to a media source, Ford wants to get rid of all streetcars in 10 years.

Oddly enough, they would be replaced by even more buses that would sit in the same traffic jams behind delivery trucks, illegally parked cars, taxis, J-walking pedestrians, and a whole range of problems common to congested 4-lane roads that cannot simultaneously be speedy arterials and local streets. Buses pulling into stops on narrow streets with parking regularly block through traffic because they cant properly reach the curb. Bus bays are not an option because there are usually buildings right at the sidewalk.

excellent points this guy makes, me thinks - http://stevemunro.ca/?p=4333

the touristy street cars are on roads that arent even busy.

The only streetcars we should keep in toronto are spadina/queens quay and st clair. And why not run vintage cars on those for tourists? The rest need to go!

steve munro is half the problem, not half the solution. He's an anti car nut as opposed to a transportation enthusiast.

yeah..she said she isn't going to bother. She could die and they could still put her name on the ballet and she would win.

I loved street cars when I first moved to Toronto b/c at least I always knew where it was going b/c they stayed on one street. However, my love of street cars QUICKLY turned to sheer hatred. Not only could I walk faster than them, they are never on time - usually with 5 passing in the opposite direction before one comes your way, they are a pain in the ass to pass and they just suck.

The only thing I like about them over the subway is that if there was a problem I could easily jump off. But I can do that with a bus too. Let's go buses, let's go!

I'm only a fan of streetcars when they have their own dedicated lanes. Getting home from the St. Clair streetcar has never been so fast this past year.

I don't know about that...it makes more sense then Ravens. A gee gee is the term for the first horse out of the starting gate....so it actually does mean something you can associate with sports.....what the hell does a raven have to do with sports.

I remember our Panda games when you had "Ottawa U Sucks" on signs on your side of the field during my frosh year.
The next year I was sure to carry a "Carleton Swallows" sign

how is it embarrassing when they've apparently been estranged for 20+ years (acc. to his campaign people)? of course the rag of a paper you quoted stuck one line in about them 'not being close' and now a bunch of retards think "wow, his own brother isn't supporting him!!!"

Buses > street cars
- can change route anytime they want.
- can change lanes.
- does not stop two lanes of traffic when picking up passengers.
- does not require driver to get out to change tracks.
- driver does not have to get out to realign power connector.

I think they are just bigger, not any more space efficient.

counterpoints I've read have noted that streetcars have significantly higher capacity than buses and the newer ones will have even greater capacity.

thus the argument is that more buses would need to be on the road to move the same # of people as streetcars, which is highly relevant if you're comparing emissions, congestion, maintenance costs, labour costs (every vehicle needs a driver), etc.

yup, I think I've made this point a page or 2 back

One reason I support transit city is the expansion into low income neighborhoods of the city. Take Scarborough for example where there are many new immigrant families who rely solely on public transportation. Many of them currently spend hours commuting to work and back. Providing a more efficient means of transportation in places like these will help a large segment of the population be more productive and will in turn be good for the city in the long run. But you can thank Dalton McGuinty for breaking his promises and putting the entire project in jeopardy.
