It HAS gone through. It had no media attention whatsoever. There was a little thing in the star just before it passed and that was it.

The goal now is to undo the bylaw by getting candidates to pledge that they will repeal the law and then we have to vote for these candidates.

But they do now! Oct 25 is the city election. They are listening because they want our votes!

You had your vote at election time. You vote for the people who you want to represent your opinion and it is up to you to voice your opinion to those people and to keep up to date on what is going on. The problem is very few young people vote, especially in city elections....if you don't voice your opinion then by voting then you don't have a right to complain after that. This will be my first municipal election in Toronto!

I just moved to Toronto this year so I will definitely be making my vote this year in the municipal election! I was previously in Mississauga, and we all know that voting there municipally doesn't matter!

Seriously though, it blows my mind that city officials are doing their best to limit our leisure options in the city. No large scale music festival of any kind, now slowly closing all the clubs, slowly. This has got to be costing $$ in the long run. A city can't be all condos.

There are tons of leisure options in the city...they may not appeal to younger adults...but lets face it...a large portion of the young adults are univeristy and college students who don't make their permanent residents in toronto.

Isn't that what we want to do? Attract the young, talented people out of university to live here and make the city continue to flourish?

Already in this thread you have people saying they want to move because of this attack on our nightlife. Which may be an over reaction, but it proves my point.

Sure, the young people want to go out and dance the night away but they are not the big spenders. The city wants the late 30s to early 40s individuals with lots of money and are willing to spend it on condos.

If people would clean up after the kite fights it wouldn't have been a problem...that being said...it's stupid to ban them. They should have just designated a certain area for kite flying.

I agree with you. And that's why people in this thread (probably in their 20's) don't agree with the city's plan and are protesting it.

but its easier to just ban it.

and there's lots of young people living in toronto who finished school and are working. toronto is just digging their own grave if all they want is 30's to 40's making up most of the population of this city.

This awesome little Victorian-era boozer was given a facelift, and started playing host to some amazing EDM parties and live bands in their courtyard & the adjoining warehouse. However, noise complaints from just one condo (which was built in the industrial area many years after the pubs and clubs)resident meant that the music venue was threatened with closure. Fortunately, the place had developed such a loyal following from people like me, that the Facebook-based campaign forced the council to change their minds.

The hugely encouraging fact is that this level of support was garnered by just one small club, in a city that has only 1/3 of Toronto's population!

It must be up there as one of the most nonsensical by-laws ever created. How come the same warped logic is not applied to prevent general littering: e.g., ban food from being eaten in public places? Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater!!!

when legit venues are squeezed so hard, invariably things go back underground, and things get interesting and the music generally reinvents itself.

this glut of control gestures is a portent of some ancillary positive things to come.

Why...because I'm stating facts that hit close to home. Nobody here cared about all the other bans or by-law changes that Jay posted about over the years until this. Now everyone wants to try and change this when in reality its too late and nothing anyone here does will change the by-law. Maybe if more young people took a little more interest in the politics of their city they could stop things like this before they happen.
