But...if you turned up somewhere with 10 years experience in a relevant field, without a degree, you think any decent recruiters would give a shit? They would not. If they do, you don't want to work there anyway.

The problem is, how do think you're going to get 10 years worth of experience in orchestration or scoring, to then go and get a job as a composer?

The answer is you can't (with a few very rare exceptions).

There are less that 100 composers on the planet who between them get 95% of all the film score work. It is incredibly competitive and they hang on to gigs tooth claw and nail - shit, I've even witnessed some of the very big names take gigs for free just to stop the jobs going to new blood.

Just look at the likes of the big EDM names who have tried to get in to score who have failed.

I'm not trying to discourage people but I've seen it - engineering is a different thing. You can start with little to no technical knowledge and slowly work your way up. I will say slower than others who do have even an audio engineering diploma but none the less it can all be learnt on the job.

Composing is a completely different thing though - I can only name one major composer who didn't have formal training/advanced education in and he did it years ago, is naturally incredibly talented and by his own admission, incredibly lucky.

I see junior composers with very serious educations from major schools and decades of training, really struggling with the complexities of scoring and these guys can literally wipe the floor with any EDM artist in terms of musical talent or knowledge.....it's so much harder and more complex than people think it is.

I actually haven't even read the blog post from Andy Blueman about this - I just assumed that scoring was what he wanted to get in to because of the "score music" attempt video posted in this thread and now I see from Robby's post that what he wants to do....

....so yes, I may be cynical but that doesn't mean I'm wrong

Posted by Kysora on Jan-02-2011 02:50:

To be frank I think Andy Blueman has no aspirations of scoring some major blockbuster or anything, and I don't think he expects to break into an industry that so obviously demands professional training and an extensive understanding of music that he probably doesn't have.

That being said you can't say he's bad at what he does, whether you enjoy it or not is a personal matter but the guy is talented, and whatever he can get I'm sure he'd enjoy working with. If nothing else he has trance to fall back on, which I'm sure he will. I can't imagine someone as musically talented as him just giving up if film scoring doesn't turn out good. He'll do something one way or another, but whatever he does I doubt it'll be motivated with money.

Sonicvibe is done with trance, too. Probably old news though. I am too for the most part. Listening and producing. I was never a very good "uplifting trance" producer, never got all the elements nailed. I appreciate solid releases and respect the producers tremendously, but I'm "over it" for the most part. Would I be bored at an all trance party? No way, I would feel at home. Sounds conflicted? It is. lol

I think it's interesting someone can do so well with something and not want to continue, but he is probably just at a personal crossroads. I doubt he will quit music because living with the guilt of wasting talent is the worst. his honesty is good though

No matter what, its always mostly negative degrading bs. I've heard your own work mystery, and if blueman is "generic tripe" your music is the maggots that feed off my shit as it rots in the summer heat.

Like I said, I still don't have an idea who this guy is, so it's pretty strange you would call me out on this - especially when it's something I can't even remember saying. I don't know why you keep referencing to me when I haven't even talked to you at any point in this thread.

Not that I really give two shits on what you think about me or my music.

Its apparent that you don't remember or know a lot of things. And its also apparent that the phrases "I don't care" or "I don't give a shit" reside pretty highly in your vocabulary.

Also, theres nothing to "know" about why I referenced you. Unless you're living in some imaginary era of slavery, people are allowed to speak w/out being spoken to.

The way you talk reminds me exactly of my 15 year old diehard emo cousin. We'll be having a conversation about something he doesn't know anything about, and he comes into the conversation and says "I don't know x and why should I care?"
Encase you also don't care, that was your first remark coming into this thread, and then for whatever reason you've managed to make that remark 3 times now in various forms.

I'm sure this is heartbreaking for you to hear, but the last thing anyone thinks before they make a thread on this forum is "hmm I wonder if mystery will care". Ergo, there is 0 reason for you to come into this thread even 1 time to remark "I don't know who blueman is, and I don't know why I should care". The mindfuck here is WHY you would care enough to come into this thread in the first place just to post that useless shit.

So anyway, I'm happy you don't care, but I also don't care about rap music, and I'm sure as hell not clicking into random threads about it to ask people why I should care about it. Unlesssss of course, I just wanted to sound emo, then yeh I might do that.

And you know that because you've seen me say so in exactly one thread?

I'd just like to know why you're obviously trying to get me riled up by poking me pointlessly or trying lame personal insults just to get a response.

Okay, I'm emo now.

What I'm wondering is why is it such a big deal someone announces they've given up genre x, particularily when they're not even a major player in the scene in any way. People do this all the time without kicking up a fuss.

Yeah, that must be it. Another case solved by our very own Sherlock.

And what exactly was your reasoning behind posting "I don't know who this is or why I should care" in a thread that you could have easily just ignored, if not to get a response?

Uhh, haha, well at least this proves you mean it when you say you have no idea who he is.

No! I will bristle at you asking me to soften my antagonism and then proceed to make an unflattering comparison between Andy Blueman and the quality of your own work.

Posted by Vernon Wanderer on Jan-02-2011 15:27:

I was only familiar with a couple of his tracks, the breakdowns were obviously his focal point, as they were amazing and the rest of the track was.. usual.

Who is he? He is a guy from Slovenia, he posted on TranceFix.nl from time to time, ppl call him Andrej. Good guy.

You can check out his unreleased stuff here:

lulz at the comments

I'm sure he will get more respect in the movie soundtrack realm.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-02-2011 15:28:

i've always thought that trance isn't Andy Blueman's thing, film and ambient is where he can succeed, a lot of producers should take AB's approach because that kind of trance is absolutely not EDM, how the fuck can you dance to that? But i like this kind of film music a lot, i am a great fan of Andy Blueman and i think i will love his music more without 4/4 kicks.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Jan-02-2011 15:39:

he is only original with the melodies, melodic wise his tracks are ace but only the breakdowns take a little difference from the rest, the drums at Neverland (Energetic Mix) are amazing though

Posted by Zak McKracken on Jan-02-2011 17:01:

his melodies arent really original either, they are mostly common classic chord-transitions with a random arp setting. as long as he is having fun i dont want to bash him, i rather bash the people getting impressed by such generic stuff. but enough now people can like whatever they like

If i exclude Airbase i find hard to find someone who makes really impressive melodies on a constant flow nowadays (back in the days the track weren't technically as good but the arrangement and melodic content was always top notch ).

His trance is all about chord progressions but 90% of uplifting trance is this and no one equals to him in this "orchestal trance", there are a lot of copycats of this style, he didn't invent it either, is almost as old as trance itself but this subgenre owes a lot to Andy Blueman

orchestral trance bring dj precision to mind.

Serious? omg i loved his stuff. Also everyone needs to chill out why dont you all just reach deep into your heart and make music you love and just keep at it thats why we are all here. Dont ask about how to sound like so and so or does my kick complement each other or does this sound ok who cares just make your music. I got told once that dont bother comparing your tracks to that of mastered tracks because that is a mastering engineers job. I just wish people would still make trance that we all know and love experiment with soundscapes and sounds and just open your mind even if people dont get your music just do it for the love of it. Alot of people these days are all about the money and wanting to become a big name and hence the music they produce goes out the window with that view just experiment and open your mind i know im probably blabbling on but if people just made glorious music and emotional pieces rather than bickering the world would be a better place. We need producers like us to keep the trance scene alive who cares if your not a name or are a name we all should just join forces and keep trance alive. I think alot of it comes with the bpm i don't think people will agree with me but i genuinely believe that when trance dropped below 135 bpm it has lost its energy. When you go to clubs you want to hear energy and tunes that grip your soul and make you feel alive and i just dont feel that with music these days. I continue to produce tunes at 137-144 bpm because i love that energy. Btw on that note i think producers on here should each make a song and make a tranceaddict album

Sorry if some people dont like my views but i just want people to realise that music comes from your heart it shouldnt matter whether or not the scene is dictated by a handful of djs just get on with it and do what we all love!

Posted by DJ Robby Rox on Jan-02-2011 21:18:

Well Andy does most his tracks at 138bpm so if anything he's doing that right.

Also, I would expect airbase to have a bit more experience and time in making trance I mean he's been doing it for how long now?

Andy made his first track in 2007, could you imagine what his sound would have sounded like by 2014? Airbase also (if I remember correctly) is a piano guru and has had formal training teaching piano.
Andy came in as some young nobody with a copy of cubase, no midi keyboard, and no hardware besides that. Airbase prob had 10 years of experience writing melodies before he even started making trance, but I just know the contexts are totally different.

I'm not judging him purely by his melodies and percussion, I'm taking everything into account about him as a person.
And wtf with "common chords"? Ok, then name them. What are the progressions? Andy's melodic content in a single track is likely more than you will ever accomplish your entire life.
Nobody came into this thread calling the guy a superstar. And you will notice more people like his music then less. He has a style, and he wasn't really in the game long enough to for his style to evolve. Although what he accomplished in his short time here I consider impressive.
Now he's moving on to scoring and he's just going to further grow as a musician/artist. By the time he's Airbases age I'm sure you'll be able to draw a much fairer comparison.

Posted by Storyteller on Jan-02-2011 21:46:

If I remember correctly, mister Blueman has made tons of trance tracks under the alias 'Xeegee' before he stepped into the commercial realm of music production.
