Oh, spare us the tolerance crap, Lira. People preaching tolerance are the most intolerant of all because they don't even tolerate their own animosities and resentments.

tolerance as an act is seperated from one's own beliefs though-- that's the biggest misunderstanding of the thing--

Lira obviously has his own beliefs, the difference between him and others is that he doesn't try and force them on people- that's what tolerance is: Not trying to force people to listen to you (of course if you're preaching tolerance you're still going to be trying to make people listen, but it transcends individual belief )

There should be.

Suppose you're a passionate phrenologist and you believe phrenology defines the person you are. You judge people just by looking at their skulls and you believe you treat them fairly, because your phrenological skills help you determine what a person is good/bad at. Moreover, you're the president of the American Association of Phrenology. Should I respect phrenology just because you consider your love for phrenology an important part of who you are?

Not at all. People deserve respect, ideas don't.

As a matter of fact, I do tolerate my resentments quite well, I'd say. I know what it is that I'm biased against in general (from homoeopathy to spiritualism/religion) and I try to analyse my biases carefully in order to be a critic rather than a bully.

But this is exactly the problem. Instead of using the knowledge about your resentments for becoming a nicer and more rational person you should use them to avoid rational discussions about the subject and establish your biased opinion as the ground truth and anyone who argues against it as an idiot. Everyone does it and so should you. It's common sense, like wearing leather shoes to a ... oh, I see.

And apart from that, what you should also do is this:

Well in that case I retract my statement, cus this Aprils fools joke is so far beyond what can be called lame, I don't even think there's a word for it.

Better luck next year, Marcus! Maybe you can try telling us that you've dyed your hair slightly more black.

Funny how I've gotten more done with less, then, isn't it?
