Pages (8): « 1 2 3 [4] 5 6 7 8 »
welcome to the school of chicken sammich fellas!!!
HEV SAMMICH NAO.
@ziptnf: Glad you enjoyed it m8, sorry you've got some dodgy memories of "Dance Yrslf Clean" - that's definitely one I pretty much only have good memories of, but I know the feeling.
I'm trying to teach myself how better to actually mix a lot of funk/electro (read: not electro house) and hip hop right now in hopes of trying to crush a mix of old school tunes.
Back on Traktor Scratch w/ vinyl, so it's a little easier than try to cut on CDJ's or making it sound fun in Ableton (not that it can't be done - it just can't by me).
i luv the track selection rjt and luv the concept 'ta's share their classics' for those of u who dont know, i live in so calif and my house (guest house on a huge estate which belongs to family of echo) has become the place where people congregate on the weekends, specifically echo of silence (when she's on this continent) and her friends, trip2nite (old skool ta) and his friends, others from my alma mater (berkeley) and nearby schools (ucla, usc, cal tech). we hang out, study (lot of us are working on advanced degrees), relax, dance, swim (huge lap pool here), play pool games and listen to music. if i'm not on the decks, we're listening to sets by ta's or ourboard radio streams (thanks to nou). long story short, we play these tas share their classics sets off and on through each weekend, its a big hit so thanks to everyone whose taken the time to make and share a set. anyone heard from rebel9 about his mix?

Hey Rob, thank you so much for contributing! Your set is gre-a-a-a-a-a-a-t!
If you or others who have already made a contribution decide you want to do a Part II sometime in 2012 or 2013 or put together a Part II as a Bonus Set to the thread, let me know. Bonus Sets can be posted anytime but the hope is that they continue the spirit of the thread minus the time constraints.
I think the first Part II is scheduled for later this year or early next year.
Hi everyone,
Here is this months mix as I was requested to make a mix for August. Haven't got too much to say about my selection here,it's quite varied but I wanted to put some of my favourite music in that I wouldn't dj with normaly. I like edgy, groovy, strange and epic stuff of sorts and that's reflected here, I didn't pay too much attention to mixing here, although I wish it was better I don't care too much as this mix isn't really about that. Just hope it flows somewhat and that some of you enjoy the music here.
Inspiration Download
Tracklist.
1. Frank Zappa - The Way I See It Barry/Peaches En Regalia [Verve Records/Reprise Records.1969/70]
I'm kicking thing's off here with the guy who has inspired me the most, I think. Always been fascinated by FZ, way ahead of his time imo. I have so many favourite song's from Frank too it was hard to decide but I went with Peaches because it's a firm favourite.
2. Herbie Hancock - Watermelon Man [CBS.1973]
I've chosen Hancock's re-worked version here taken from the Head Hunters album where he really funks it up. I listen to quite a bit of
old funk and jazz records and Watermelon Man is such a seriously good groovin tune. I love it.
3. The Beach Boys - Do You Dig Worms/Roll Plymouth Rock [Capitol.1966]
Also being a fan of Brian Wilson, this is perhaps my favourite song of his. The Bicycle Rider theme played out on harpsichord is kinda eerie but I'm intrigued. Originally intended for release on Smile in 1966, it came out under the title Roll Plymouth Rock when Brian released Smile in 2004. This is the original Beach Boys version taken from the Good Vibrations box set recorded during the Heroes And Villains sessions
4. Tori Amos - Icicle [EastWest.1994]
This is a beautifully written piece of music imo, easily my favourite song from Tori Amos. I only actually really like her Under The Pink album. Starts out with some eerie piano lines I've tried to blend in to the tail of Do You Like Worms, before it really gets into it.
5. Dire Straits - Ride Across The River [live in Sydney 1986]
This concert really sparked my interest in music, I was about 5 at the time and I just loved Dire Straits. It wasn't long after that I got some drums and wanted to play! I really like this live version taken from the final concert of their 1985/6 tour in Sydney. The play between Knopfler and Chris White on the flute is just superb, just a really polished performance.
6. Sonic Animation - The Nothingness [Global Recordings.1999]
Sonic Animation pretty much sparked my interest in electronic music back in the late 90's. Before then I listened to a lot more live music and bands etc. But yeah, they just blew me away at a few parties and festivals and really put on a mad fun, energetic show around then. This is a more chilled downtempo affair from them but I
like the haunting vocals from Becca Boucher. Really I think Orchid For The Afterworld is an essential EDM album that everyone here should have.
7. The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows [Apple Records.1966]
Again I've been a fan of the Beatles music for a long time and could have picked many of their tunes, but this one is my favourite from their Revolver album. A really experimental and psychedelic song from that time using lots of production effects and is one of the first songs to uses a flanger on an instrument.
8. The Dudley Moore Trio - Song For Suzy [Atlantic 1972]
Dudley Moore was pretty clever and I've liked his jazz records for a while. He released three LP's on Atlantic from 65-72, this is probably one of his trio's better known songs from his last album, Today. Sorry for the crackles an pops, the record is old and so worn.
9. Dream Theater - Hell's Kitchen [East West Records.1997]
Well this is a pretty epic peice imo. The vocalist kinda put me off Dream Theater but I really like some of their instrumentals like this, with impeccable chops and an epic progression the music here really blows me away every time I hear it. I got into really heavy drum and guitar stuff while I was growing up, listening to a lot of metal, I like John Petrucci's guitar and Mike Portnoy's playing in particular, even though they come across as egotistical.
10. Mr. Oizo - Analog Worms Attack [Creating Vibes.1999]
I started listening to more obscure and experimental techno and electronica around 2000 like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and the like and by then interested in learning to dj. The bass in this Mr. Oizo
track floored me first time I heard it, I guess it could be just a personal thing, but one of those moments I've never forgotten.
11. Rage Against The Machine - Maggie's Farm [Sony Music.2000]
This is a cover of an old Bob Dylan classic, taken from their Renegades albumn. I've been a big fan of Rage for years and love the agression and power of their sound, and the way they've injected that into this song. This is my favorite track from that albumn, which were all covers. I've got loads of other RATM tunes I love too, but decided to put this in.
12. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive [EMI.1967]
Ahh well I couldn't leave out another favourite band of mine. I've always like their earlier more experimental, pre-Dark Side of The Moon stuff a lot more, and this is a personal favourite from the first albumn Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and my favourite of Syd Barrett's songs. I like the tripped out mid-section, and the main riff is just massive.
13. Spiritualized - I Think I'm In Love (The Chemical Brother's Mix) [BMG.1997]
So I also was listening to a lot of big-beat stuff like Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Propellerheads, Crystal Method etc. along with Sonic Animation and a few other trip-hop bands as I was first delving into electronic music. The original is really cool, but I really like the Chemical Brothers' big beat treatment here.
14. Honeysmack - Slapjack (live) [Smelly Records.1999]
Some of my more early techno influences here. Was getting out to more tech nights and raves around Melbourne at the time this came out. I guess this would be one of those really personal classics because there's nothing really in this that hadn't kinda been done before, but man this track used to get me so pumped to get out. It's a pretty massive live 303 acid affair recorded at revolver nightclub in Melbourne, the build up sends me mental everytime.
15. Tony De Vit - The Dawn [Tidy Trax.2000]
I'm known to play my share of cheesy hard dance and thought it fitting to include at least one of my favourite hard dance classics. Hard house and techno were the first flavors I was spinning when I started to dj. Tony De Vit was a legend and this is probably my most favorite hard dance tune ever, classic stuff.
16. Temple City Kazoo Orchestra - Kazooed On Classics [Rhino Records.1982]
Save the best for last right.... A perfect example of my awesome musical tastes, lol. A little medley of classics that almost everyone should be familiar with.

Now that... is a diverse tracklisting.
Downbopping now.
Sliding my engorged member into this.
Nice tunes man, loved all of them, aside from the last one

haha that one's so god damned awful, I can't help but love it!
I enjoyed that mr teezd, some cool tunes in there.
And i was digging the kazoos
sensa-buuulous!! what an assortment!!
Hey Teez, your set is superb. Thank you so much for sharing your classics with us.... fun stuff!
I can't believe that no tracks have been duplicated yet. It surprises me because I would think a lot of us would have been turned on by or attracted to similar/the same stuff.
Our September TA isn't able to put together his classics. Hopefully, he'll have a chance to do something later.
If someone wants to post a Part II or a bonus set this month, feel free. I'll touch base with Mr. October, now and hopefully we'll be back on track quickly.

Oh yes, yes, thank you Boomers for saving the day (or the month)!
Cuss cuss, my "TAs Share Their Classics" schedule is slowly, surely disintegrating. I think I might need to rearrange a few sets. My golly gosh, this feels too much like "real" life where I'm always rearranging jobs, deadlines, presentations. la la la back to Bs.
Disco Boomer - Classics
So when I think classics, I think Vinyl. And when I think favorites, I think of the songs I close my eyes to and sing/dance along while I play them. Which means there is some cheese. This also means that I had to remember how to mix vinyl again. I am a bit out of practice so there are some rough transitions, but whatever.
I thought I would include a picture of the vinyl I was mixing, as I was mixing.
01. Brian Eno - An Ending (Ascent)(Leama & Moor Remix)
This definitely a beautiful song that I think is the most uplifting song. It just screams happiness. Above & Beyond opened their essential mix in 2006 with this and I have loved it since.

02. Portishead - Roads (Sultan & Tone Depth)
Beautiful breakdownlyricseverything. This song makes me jump up and down every time I mix it.

03. Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes (Gabriel & Dresden Sweeping Strings Mix)
So it was the summer I was moving out to Las Vegas for grad school and I kept hearing this in Armin's set and could never get sick of it. Was it over played, probably, did I get sick of itnope. Still love it. Just a great jam and the G & D mix is my favorite, very grooving. And you can see by the next 2 songs, I liked the G & D style.

04. Andain - Beautiful Things (Gabriel & Dresden Unplugged Mix)
Solid bass line, amazing vocals, I can't help but try to sing along. This always challenged me technically with mixing, so I think there was some galloping.

05. Above & Beyond - No One On Earth (Gabriel & Dresden Mix)
So the summer after As the rush comes another song captures everyone's attention and is canned by everyone. I still remember the day this came in the mail. I laided on my bed and kept moving my needle to repeat it over and over. I was also bummed that soon after getting this vinyl it developed a skip in the beginning. That is why I mixed out of Andain so quick, because of the skip. Simply a great tune to close your eyes and belt out.

06. Tilt - Twelve (Max Graham Mix)
Ok, so this one has no lyrics, but is just such a solid track. The breakdown is so amazing, i always pump my fist to this one.

07. Santiago Nino - Believe (Max Graham's Sidechain Remix)
So this has always been an amazing track I have loved. But I was at Love Parade in San Fran and Markus Schulz dropped this on the floatblew my mind. Love the solid bass on this, makes me dance every time.

08. Max Graham ft. Jessica Jacobs - I Know You're Gone
Some of Max's best work here. He is definitely one of my favorite producers. The lyrics, the beat. Again, somethign to close your eyes to and belt outpreferable alone for the sake of others

09. U2 - Staring At The Sun (Brothers In Rhythm Club Mix)
I love me some remixes. U2 is just a greta band, the song rocksgreat remix. The breakdown is sick, and again, fun to belt out alone.

10. Marco V - Automanual
So this is where I break the style of the previous tracks, the next few songs are just great jams that get me moving. This is probably my favorite track to mix because the intro sounds all normal and kicks into the gritty reving synthsmakes me dance around. Plus the vinyl itself is blue!

11. Jaxson Respect - Baby
There are a ton of MJ remixes out there but this one is a jam. I usually play both Dirty and this one since they are both very similar.and very kick ass. Full of energy.

12. Erick Morillo , Harry Romero & Jose Nunez - Dancin (Fuzzy Hair Remix)
I believe this was introduced to me by anuneventrade
and the vinyl was a gift from Clovis.

Enjoy.
Not really what I expected out of a "classics" mix, but will give it a go

Grant, great mix buddy. I really had moments with the Dire Straits and Dream Theater tracks. Those were just so epic and badass. Your mixing was pretty damn great considering the tracks you played! I highly enjoyed everything, even the totally
kazoo track at the end. Nice job!

Really nice work, Boomer. That mix is packed with classics. Lots of really great ones there. When "As the Rush Comes" came on I got some serious goosebumps. I forwarded this to my friends who dig vocal trance, I'll let you know their thoughts.
Jeez, I have 7 of those tracks on vinyl myself Boomer187! Thought you had nabbed my old record box for a moment.
Will have myself a listen of the grooves...
Wow, Boomers what a fun set. So many memories. Really, all I can say is wow. What a pleasure.
Thank you.
If you want to do a Part II, let me know. Thank you so much for filling in when the TA who was scheduled to do September couldn't put it together.
Guys, geez, these sets are just really really good.
I was stuck in Pakistan, in the foothills, miles from civilization, in a little tent with frazzled seams and a hole; it was raining and mud was seeping in but I was listening to RJT's set and you know, everything was right with the world. I was just so content. Bopping to the beat. I stopped worrying about gross spiders invading my space for what...70 minutes?

I miss Lews - Dark Prog mix tracklist and Ian's mix wont work, the Soundcloud link doesn't exist.
Anyone could upload these?
