Facebook's like, "take that!", Google+ Hangouts

It will only support one-on-one chats, and won't support group chats for some time. Google+: 1, Facebook: 0.

1) Again, that's not a problem unless you're doing something illegal.
2) No, it's not. It's a safeguard. These things aren't proactively checked to see if there's any wrong doing, they're in place so that if something does happen, there's reliable evidence on hand after the fact.

but are people really going to use multiple participant video conferences that much? and can their internet connections support it?

what's to say skype and facebook wont upgrade their tech to include multiple people in the future, and wouldn't people rather use their existing accounts and social network?

Don't facebook have the right to sell pictures of you for uses in ads or commercials without you knowing of it? Even pictures taken of you uploaded by others?
I've certainly heard such stories at least.

Posted by Tasty Onions on Jul-06-2011 20:18:

It's not always easy to tell when something currently legal will become illegal, or when it might just become something that could "tag" you as worth investigating.

Also, there's no practical guarantee of surveillance capabilities being used only for "legitimate purposes." Months ago I read a story about some officers using surveillance privileges in the U.S. to stalk and harass women they were interested in. Any power granted to law enforcement or others for "legitimate" use is also, in effect, a power granted to that inevitable fraction of people who will abuse it. So it's not only about the value of privacy in itself: it's also about the cost-benefit analysis of evidence gained versus new kinds of abuse made possible.

I've already used group chat twice with my friends on +. It's very nice, and it's pretty fun too.

I'm just saying, Google+ is already many months ahead of the curve. Many of my friends have already gone so far as to delete their facebook accounts and use Google+.

That's different, of course. We were talking about CCTV specifically. It's like all the retarded Germans who got their houses blurred out when Street View first got implemented here. What is there to be scared of? That someone in Nigeria knows what colour you like your house painted?

Great post, which I agree very much with in regards to person-to-person surveillance. Again though, in the context of CCTV I think there's very little potential for such activity.

Posted by Tasty Onions on Jul-06-2011 20:49:

That's probably true when it comes to CCTV. But I don't agree with "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" as a more general principle.

Ah, but you said this
quote:
(1)Why are people so scared of their "personal" data (i.e. what colour t-shirts they like) being shared? (2)It's like those tools who protest against CCTV being installed - if you're not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't have a problem with being incidentally caught on tape.

and pozz responded:

and you in turn responded:
1) Again, that's not a problem unless you're doing something illegal.

I was assuming you were still talking about "personal data" like stuff put on facebook.

anyone worried about privacy between people with google+ is going to be blown away, at least a million times more private than facebook...

There's also no ads, so can't see google stealing our souls in order to make a profit atm, as facebook's done.

they're a fkn search engine, if they're going to personalise your search they need to know what you're looking for through past searches. They're not keeping pints of your blood, and skin flakings on file in some office somewhere in order to fuck with us.

No, I believe that's scheduled for the Google++ upgrade next June.

haha most likely that is true

They might even insert ads eventually, we'll see though, I use a lot of google services and have never found their ads at all annoying.. facebook on the other hand...

Both of these answers are just the obverse of mine. One position does not preclude the other. In fact, a safeguard is a measure of suspicion.

I'm not saying "they" are out to get you, more that it is a general indication of the atmosphere of developed nations: "someone is gonna fuck with us, i dunno who, but i know it's gonna happen. i don't know when, i don't know how, but it's gonna happen... let's make a list of likely suspects: ...fuck it. monitor everyone. much more efficient."

you know, i don't even mind so much because the information they gather has dire consequences for my life or whatnot. i'm sure they have vast stores of my fingernail clippings on file too, indexed and color-coded. it's that no matter what the argument is, they will put up the cameras. if a bank gets robbed ... fuck it, it's gonna get robbed anyway. installing cameras does nothing. haven't you ever read Brecht? "What is the robbing of a bank compared to the founding of a bank?"

Your local jewelry store gets shoplifted? the distraught owner speaks: "Ohholymotherofgod. fuckin' take it. ya specks of dust."

I'm sure you were perfect as a kid too, never took anything that wasn't yours or anything like that.
