I don't believe in a God, but I don't consider myself Atheist either. I hate being categorized, and that's the part of religion that I dislike the most. People claim to be "this" or "that" religion because it's common practice among society according to their belief, yet many times find themselves being hypocrites to the same religion they practice and supposedly adhere to. What's the point of a certain religious label, if there no credibility behind it? I find inner-peace with nature at times (spiritually, and scientifically), but I don't consider myself part of a Naturalistic Nature Religion of some sorts. |

But you are a run of the mill arrogant jackass wannabe know-it-all.

Alan Watts said "Atheism in the name of God is an abandonment of all religious beliefs... giving up the attempt to make sense of the world in terms of any fixed idea or intellectual system. It is becoming again as a child and laying oneself open to reality as it is actually and directly felt, experiencing it without trying to categorize, identify or name it."

Originally posted by nefardec the best part of that is it's IMO a great description of true mysticism, and probably how most saints and great spiritual thinkers would describe it.

Originally posted by OrangestO I guess according the Mr. Watts I'm Atheist. I still dislike the categorization, though.

Originally posted by Lews Meh. I'm the same. I don't believe in God, but I don't like calling myself an atheist and rarely do, even if that's what I am. Doesn't feel right to put myself into the same category as the stereotypical atheist militant you imagine when you think of an atheist.

Originally posted by Lira That's like a moderate Christian saying they don't like to call themselves Christians because of the most unhinged members of the religion - even though it's part of a long fruitful tradition with great names such as Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky and so many more. I don't mind being called an atheist exactly for this reason: I can look up to people such as Bertrand Russell and Linus Pauling, among others, who were more than happy to claim they were agnostic in a broad sense or atheists. If I've got arguments I find interesting, it's because I'm myself part of a long tradition as well.

Originally posted by OrangestO I just say "non religious" and people usually leave me alone. I've noticed that a lot more people that I'm surrounded by share in my view points to a certain extent, though. My assumption is because I'm at a university now, and amongst educated people. I could be wrong.
Yeah, non-religion works pretty well, too.

Today
I will hug an atheist to show my support for their beliefs even though they are not my own.

Originally posted by mr.bison Atheism doesn't have a philosophy, a doctrine, a holy book of rules... Atheism can't make you do anything because atheism is simply a tag expressing what you AREN'T; An atheist is simply not a theist. That's it. It doesn't say anything about the person's political or philosophical view. It doesn't say anything about what the person thinks. Etc. It's like me being an a-blond (as I do not have blond hair). That doesn't say anything about my philosophical or political view, or personality etc. Atheist isn't an expression of something you are, but something you are not. If one is religious on the other hand, it can tell you a lot about one's political and/or philosophical view (most likely on the right side of politics and of course supporting the philosophy of the religion). There are exceptions to every rule, with both atheists and theists, but this is the way it is in general. when you have an all-powerful and all-knowing god on your side, and even better; promises of eternal bliss in a paradise when you die, it's a lot easier to do extremist actions than if you're an atheist. Since being an atheist would most likely imply that you wouldn't waste this life since this is the only life you will ever have. Plus religious faith breeds ignorance.
