I don't believe in a God, but I don't consider myself Atheist either. I hate being categorized, and that's the part of religion that I dislike the most. People claim to be "this" or "that" religion because it's common practice among society according to their belief, yet many times find themselves being hypocrites to the same religion they practice and supposedly adhere to. What's the point of a certain religious label, if there no credibility behind it?

I find inner-peace with nature at times (spiritually, and scientifically), but I don't consider myself part of a Naturalistic Nature Religion of some sorts.

Yeah, kinda like IGK likes to molest children but doesnt like to be called a kiddie fucker.

do you know what the word atheist means?

I study the spiritualistic philosophy of advaita vedanta, which is indeed atheistic.

Yes.

-and-

I don't study that. So what does it have to do with me?

i mean I am not an atheist of the woscar or sam harris or dawkins school, being more interested in self knowledge than scientific knowledge, but i'm still an atheist nonetheless, because I don't believe in god.

there are all sorts of atheists. i also dont typically call myself an atheist because i don't like to be associate with the militant science fanboys

But you are a run of the mill arrogant jackass wannabe know-it-all.

Alan Watts said
"Atheism in the name of God is an abandonment of all religious beliefs... giving up the attempt to make sense of the world in terms of any fixed idea or intellectual system. It is becoming again as a child and laying oneself open to reality as it is actually and directly felt, experiencing it without trying to categorize, identify or name it."

I guess according the Mr. Watts I'm Atheist. I still dislike the categorization, though.

the best part of that is it's IMO a great description of true mysticism, and probably how most saints and great spiritual thinkers would describe it.

the thing is when true mystics say 'god' (or Brahman, Beingness, Implicate Order, etc) what they mean is 'reality' as used in that sentence. there's a reason why the name of god is guarded in some religions, and why idols are banned in others. same principle, but somewhere along the line, people forgot what it was all about and just started caring about the rules for the rules' sakes.

Alan Watts was a great spiritual thinker, according to many.

Meh. I'm the same. I don't believe in God, but I don't like calling myself an atheist and rarely do, even if that's what I am. Doesn't feel right to put myself into the same category as the stereotypical atheist militant you imagine when you think of an atheist.

Exactly my thinking.

It's quite appalling that Sam Harris gets so much attention saying what so many people have said before him... without giving them any credit.

That's like a moderate Christian saying they don't like to call themselves Christians because of the most unhinged members of the religion - even though it's part of a long fruitful tradition with great names such as Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky and so many more.

I don't mind being called an atheist exactly for this reason: I can look up to people such as Bertrand Russell and Linus Pauling, among others, who were more than happy to claim they were agnostic in a broad sense or atheists. If I've got arguments I find interesting, it's because I'm myself part of a long tradition as well.

Hey, a person can be both atheist and a total science fanboy without being militant.

It's also like someone who believes men and women are equal and should have equal rights not wanting to be called a feminist due to crazy extremist feminists. Aka, it's stupid, but it's something humans do a lot

It's easier for me to simple say I'm "kind of agnostic" or that "it's complicated," then saying I'm an atheist and getting into all the details.

Do what I do: tell them you're a Naturalist and watch their reaction as they try to imagine you naked.

It's an awesome way to find out who fancies you and who doesn't

I just say "non religious" and people usually leave me alone. I've noticed that a lot more people that I'm surrounded by share in my view points to a certain extent, though. My assumption is because I'm at a university now, and amongst educated people. I could be wrong.

The only friend I've ever ditched for religious reasons had a Master's in psychology, so I'm quick to dismiss education as a foolproof path to tolerance.

As a matter of fact, I've just read about intolerance in Academia. It's a very interesting account of what does happen both on the intarwebs and off-line.

Posted by Lews on Jul-26-2011 02:06:

Yeah, non-religion works pretty well, too.

Today

I will hug an atheist to show my support for their beliefs even though they are not my own.

Atheism doesn't have a philosophy, a doctrine, a holy book of rules... Atheism can't make you do anything because atheism is simply a tag expressing what you AREN'T; An atheist is simply not a theist. That's it. It doesn't say anything about the person's political or philosophical view. It doesn't say anything about what the person thinks. Etc.

It's like me being an a-blond (as I do not have blond hair). That doesn't say anything about my philosophical or political view, or personality etc.

Atheist isn't an expression of something you are, but something you are not.

If one is religious on the other hand, it can tell you a lot about one's political and/or philosophical view (most likely on the right side of politics and of course supporting the philosophy of the religion). There are exceptions to every rule, with both atheists and theists, but this is the way it is in general.

when you have an all-powerful and all-knowing god on your side, and even better; promises of eternal bliss in a paradise when you die, it's a lot easier to do extremist actions than if you're an atheist. Since being an atheist would most likely imply that you wouldn't waste this life since this is the only life you will ever have.

Plus religious faith breeds ignorance.

I'm quite sure it's neither. Pedophiles would be a better guess.
