that comment is silly Fran. this board is full of music lovers and more importantly paying customers. it's not your fault if digweed sucked so don't get self defensive if music lovers that paid to be there want to vent.

saying it only happens on this board is bebe lala. we both know that other local discussion boards are filled with pill poppers that would dance to a midget beatboxing with his gassy anus into a mic so long as there is a sick laser.

pew pew

just sayin

not to mention calling out people that you have no problem promoting to is in bad taste. I like you man , but talking about events is what this place is for.

don't bite the hand that feeds you, it is horrible marketing. creator did it right with his post. if you can't do it that way you probably shouldn't at all man.

this isn't a flame either, but don't take the people that help hype the night for you for free for granted. another club you used to work for did that, and it's not open anymore now is it?

ouch!

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-07-2011 16:46:

jay, how is that not a flame? lol...

why cant we all just get along?

Posted by Zyklon_Jay on Sep-07-2011 16:59:

because some of the people that said they had a bad time are the same people that have said nice things about circus in the past.

its in bad taste...considering you filmed fir them this night you might abstain from this as well. I didn't go to this... but come on.

this site are the only negative people on the Internet, but when it will be time to promote something it will be good enough for that.

once again, I like Fran because he contributes to this place...that doest change that I think it is insulting to the people that paid to be there and in bad taste.

that's it that's all... if a promoter you didn't know said the same thing, you would agree. try saying that to a client at a real job and see how long you keep it

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-07-2011 17:02:

but he didnt even say anything insulting to his clientele? Anyway I don't wanna fight. I just wanna slay unicorns all day.

Posted by Spin Laden on Sep-07-2011 17:12:

Jay is right again, he just has a piercing way of illustrating his point

Fran, I need to bring hockey skates the next time I use the bathrooms at Circus, they are too slippery

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-07-2011 17:32:

Still can't get over how good Creator's set was...

Posted by Spin Laden on Sep-07-2011 17:46:

yeah, I regret missing his set big time. Too many other circumstances to deal with during that rock star weekend

Posted by Zyklon_Jay on Sep-07-2011 18:58:

I'm certainly an asshole, but at least I'm consistent. I was just commenting on how there is a wrong way to react to criticism completely out of the venues control. creator showed how to do it the right way.

relax testicles.

Posted by Fran666 on Sep-07-2011 20:59:

i was sad that you guys made creator say that you had only negative stuff to say and nothing positive on his night. the only negative posts i've read the following day were on here. it is a fact. Not insulting anyone, just saying that people should read what others have to say before saying EVERYONE disliked it. You are entitled to your opinions but respect the people that bring these nights and people that loved them, be a bit more constructive before dissing all of it reading "worse night ever" hurts me bad when i saw 1000 fans having fun.

if you liked digweed, you know nothing, is what comes out of this thread sorry but that's not fair you can't discuss people's taste. I liked his night so i know nothing about music ? right...

for the record jay, aria closed one year after i left for circus. moreover marketing is not at all the reason it closed. get your story straight before dissing me i don't think i deserve this at all from you.

Digweed is one of my all time favourites, and I will admit that I went in with high expectations after being blown away back in June. I left early, and I did not fully enjoy Digweed this time around. I did not have that same musical connection with him.

I felt Digweed did not have a good flow at all with his set, and the track selections for me were completely off. I have seen Digweed on numerous occasions, and I have completely enjoyed him even when he wasn't banging out techno beats all night. For a bit, I was getting a little excited because I felt as if he was going to take us on one of his space ship rides, just eerie and spooky. This didnt last very long. He seemed to be so all over the board. I kept trying to tell people, give him a chance... let him tell his story. Have patience. I waited. Around 7-730 or so, he did start pulling out a nice hard chugging arsenal, and did pick it up quite a few notches, which had me smiling again, but this was too late for me by now. Knowing he was scheduled to play until 8, I had given up. I didnt feel a story through the set this time, and Digweed is always to me, one of the master story tellers behind the decks. I do understand every DJ has their off night, and that is totally fair and I accept that.

I still enjoyed being at Circus, as it is a fun club to adventure through. The music just did not do much for me this time around.

I counted maybe 10 reviews on here and it was almost 50/50, those are the actual facts.

IMO, the FB audience is much bigger but you generally get less dicerning posters, less analyses on there as well. I wouldn't worry too much about TA, not enough lurkers or posters on here anyways.

But then again, if the reviews are constructive, at least (i.e, "the event sucked, because....") then you guys can learn a thing or two to improve the product, nothing wrong with that.

Btw, the djs in the other rooms were very very good too.

exactly, constructive negative remarks i can eat all day it's all positive in the end for improvement.

the review by Knox is constructive, imo.

Are you guys able to nudge the dj before the gig and say "the crowd likes it hard" or do the djs booked at Circus have absolute carte blanche to play what he/she wants to play?? I know some promoters do that but there's a fine line there, as that can obviously be quite annoying for the respective dj.

I'd imagine they give someone like Digweed the benefit of the doubt

bien sr

Plus Montreal brings out the individuality and creativity too but complacency can be a killer sometimes too.

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-07-2011 22:09:

ps props to malick + chopin who ripped up the other room on sunday!!!!

one very important thing I realized in this industry is you just cant please everyone. However, I also agree that positive criticism goes much further than negative criticism.

Posted by devnull on Sep-08-2011 00:13:

now that im back home, time for a better review.

Digweed @ Guv not long ago was pure insanity....and as Knox said, it sounds like he did the same to Circus the night before. Those nights were journeys that are very hard to beat. However, people are used to Digweed constantly outdoing himself, which is a feat in itself.

I really love the new look of Circus...last time I came it was for Preach when he played in the room upstairs and that was one hell of a sauna. I didnt venture into the main room much then since the other dj was trance.

This time around, I ventured a bit. Had no idea how big Circus is! I really like the lighting setup. So serious work done in that department (love the lighted top part of the towers and the lights beaming between towers within the racking). Sound system wise, definitely a powerful system. I came prepared and brought er-20s. Very glad i did since it was a tad louder than what i normally deal with. I cant imagine dancing all night in front of a stack.

Music wise, I caught the tail end of Creator's opening set. Really enjoyed the last 30 mins. It picked up the pace and really set up the sound for digweed. Digweed then played good for 30 mins and then went for a good 2-2.5 hours of uninspiring house. That part failed to drum up my energy. As much as I love the Lee Foss'y track he played.....felt so off to hear from Diggers! By 745, Digweed turned on the banging switch and ripped it until 830. Loved the closing track. Overall, had I arrived at 730, I would have been pleased about his set (albeit very short). Unfortunately, the journey wasnt there.

Creator then took it back and laid a great opening. We didn't stay much longer since we were tired....and knew 3 more rounds of partying were coming before returning to TO.

In short:
Creator 7/10
Digweed 5/10 gotta give a fail grade.
Circus setup 8/10
Bathroom situation.....well its clean...very clean like a zamboni cleaned her up every 5 mins And dude pukin next 2 me....not good lol

Im still shocked at the openness of some things...but not the place to discuss.

Let me add my 2 cents... and let me preface this by saying that I didn't attend the event.

@ Fran & Spin: I totally agree that people should give constructive criticisms on a event rather than "it just sucked". But how do you go about doing it when the target of the criticisms is not the venue or the promoters themselves, but an international DJ who doesn't read this forum anyway?

Unless I missed a few posts, most people had an issue with Digweed's set (i.e. the music), not the club, the setup or the sound. I doubt there was anything anyone could have done to change that, other than switching DJs.... And what's the point of suggesting what Digweed should have played when he's not around to learn from it ? Therefore there's no way you can be constructive in this situation.

However, I do agree that people should abstain from generalizing. You can say I had a bad time or Me and my friends had a lousy time but don't say everyone was bored.

This is where some may be curious as to what promoters do when the dj is subpar. Do you look at it solely by numbers, by if it was just a 'blip' or do you not book the dj altogether next time?? Do you dare tell the dj what the patrons expect from them next time?

I remember reading about Victor not being booked again at Beach Club after his flat minimal set few years back but now he would rip a new one in pretty much venue you book him.

Agreed. Anyone know who was playing in the other room by any chance? I believe it was one DJ playing the whole night but I could be wrong.

Greetings from Hong-Kong!

Wow, lots of reviews... And drama!

Obviously we want every Black Out to be better than the last one. We do care a lot about your reviews and opinions. When some people are disapointed, we are as well. We might even get emotional about it :-)

I appreciate all the nice words about my set, and of course Digweed will be back!

Hold on to youe hats, because we have another great black out coming in october, you guys willl be excited!

Caught some of Creators set and left about 6:45. At that time my girlfriend was just too tired and we both wanted to get some sleep. Overall I enjoyed myself and Digweed really kept me dancing. I didnt see him back in June so I cant really compare this time to the previous one. However my girlfriend and I both had a really good time, he kept both of us dancing non stop until we left because legs were just totally dead.. walking up the stairs from the metro was death!! Sounds like he did try out some different type of tracks but like I said he really kept us going and had a good time.

The next night however I was really unimpressed. Arty really sucked imo, no flow to his set at all, some mixing sounded pretty off to me as well. FULL of vocal tunes, counted at least 20 vocals in the first hour and a half. Place was packed with people and he got them dancing etc but I dunno, after hearing such good stuff from John Pressure then all the sudden Arty getting on and playing some R.E.M. mashup I think followed by lots of vocal tracks it was pretty "WTF" type of reaction and vibe. Ending with Adagio for Strings wasnt bad I guess.

Thankfully Tritonal saved my night and changed my mood around, they had a nice set. It seemed to me too that Arty had the sound cranked up way louder than Tritonal, that may have helped a bit too. But yeah either way, Arty was one of the worst sets Ive seen this year hands down. Tritonal were good though.

Thanks to Circus/Fran again for a great weekend though. Just dont bring back Arty anytime soon hahaa.
