There are lot's of Armada artist because many people that vote for Armin #1 will put someone like Dash Berlin at number 2, because they have been force fed his vocal pop stuff all year on ASOT. Same with Gareth Emery. He is part of that group that benefits greatly from Armin. I think as Armin starts to fade, the trance guys also will begin to fade. The guys that I think do a great job by themselves are Cosmic Gate, Ferry Corsten and Markus schulz. These guys have their own thing going away from Armin and are legit top 20 crowd drawing DJs.

You serious?

I read DJMag and this year it had a lot of dubstep articles in it.

I have stopped the subscription by now though.

Just because dubstep fans don't read DJMag doesn't mean DJMag won't try and desperately cultivate that crowd for readership. Hell, even Spin magazine's going after them by having Skr-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-rillex on their cover.

The reality is that the votes are mostly driven by the fanbase of the DJs involved, and are not really reflected of the skill and/or production quality. Is David Guetta one of the most popular DJs worldwide? Absolutely. And the same can be said for everyone in the top 10... 20... 30. Are they the BEST at what they do? Not necessarily. But skills rarely drive votes these days. Everyone relax.

if the poll had anything to do with actual DJ skills then Digweed would win every year.

No, no he wouldn't.

Seriously? He wouldn't even be close.

Posted by xCTx on Oct-22-2011 06:31:

lol @ Ferry Corsten dropping to 18, deadmau5 locked at 4 when he hasn't come out with decent quality since 2009 and the simplicity of Thomas Gold not even making the top 100. The poll is strictly popularity, clearly.

You could be right, but we're not in 2005 anymore. Markus Schulz has gone downhill ever since 2008 and this year he was nothing but a complete disappointment! 90% of his sets in 2011 (especially the live ones) totally sucked, he started playing some crap imitation of 'techno' with weird 'piupiupoipoui' sounds and 'wirpwripwurp' sirens. Strange part is that the what so called 'coldharbour army' believe this is the new direction of the underground trance scene.
So Markus Schulz should be happy he 'secured' the 9th position, I'm huge fan of his older work (productions & sets), but he's a complete joke right now.

Let's see. I think that with lots of "first time voters" this year Markus being in the Top10 already proves that even "well-known DJs" (I refused to write "old DJs") still have a share on the fans. But you are right: Markus could have done better this year.

Apart from that: even when DJs dropped from within the Top25 last year to places between 75-100 this year it still shows their competitiveness. Given the large flow of first-time-voters this certainly holds...

BTW: does someone know about the positions between 101-250?

.

See I totally disagree with that. I have followed him since 2005 as well and the energy and crazyness in his sets the last year has been unmatched. I love it. He sold out 3 shows during WMC here in Miami so it goes to show you that whereas the old prog fans may not be happy he has evolved and his fan base has grown. in 2005 hardly anybody knew who he was. In 2011 he sells out gigs all over. He still plays plenty of prog trance in his sets, but on his World Tour shows this year I noticed he plays the first few hours from his extended sets that are always banging. His radio show is still better than all the other big name trance DJs.

one thing to add, Markus Schulz is the only one in the top 10 that is not a wanna be pop DJ.

LOL, almost everyone from top 100 wants to be a pop DJ.

I am not talking about productions, I am talking about DJing.

His DJ sets are legit, thats my point. He does not play pop music like the rest of the top 10.

I think both of you make valid points, 09 and 10 he was a different gear and blew everyone else out of the water, from all the clubbing I did every single 1 of his sets sticks in the memory, I still blast out Jochen Miller - Humanoid thanks to him for example but this year I've also noticed a large techno element coming into his sets, I saw him at space this year and for the first time ever I wasn't struck on a set of his for that very reason. As for that sound being held up as the new direction of the underground scene, you could argue it's the most prominent sound out there that isn't the saccharine vocal trouse thatis worryingly prominent

Who the hells read DJMag anyway? Is it based in US or in the UK? Anyway i would even consider Mixmag superior to this shit magazine.

ShitSchulz has never been relevant, his crap mixes and productions belongs to the garbage all together. You just have bad taste in what you so called trance music..

Funny you should say that. I wouldnt say he is playing techno these days. 75% of the tunes he plays out (having heard him live twice in three months) are high octaine, trance based fodder with horrible electro stabs.

He isnt the only trance dj doing this. In fact I am finding that the majority of trance djs that do not adhere to the melodic Anjunabeats style are doing much the same. Is this trouse? Whatever it is, imo its killing the scene, or at least torturing it.

Im really struggling with trance now. It was (is?) my favourite genre and I go back to the early 90s with it so Im not aiming to dis the scene. Maybe Ive grown out of it? Trance djs seem to focus on electro tinged rubbish, melodic Anjunabeats tosh or psycadelia. Its just not for me. Im longing to hear some new, original hypnotic sounds. Can anyone recommend any before I bow out of the scene, maybe for good?

BT used to make the top 100 every year without ever having played a set in his life. Then when he did he dropped out!! True. Djing can seriously ruin a djs career!
