That is why shows like say the one Gareth does actually doing producers a favour by playing the track and naming the track as opposed the the 1 hour mix with a track list which you have no idea which track is playing when. Those podcasts do nothing to increase sales.
i agree that there is definitely a missing link between playlisting and support for artist releases, but it does seem to do an artist a solid boost in sales if it's playlisted on ASOT or TATW (you can pretty much see by Beatport sales how much a difference this makes, especially for smaller labels). even going by youtube hits, those shows get so many rips uploaded. DJ support (from bigger names) is definitely beneficial for exposure and seemingly sales as well

i definitely agree here. rare to see instrumental tracks do truly well unless the artist has already built a huge name for themselves

Yeah, this was my point, you say that bad music gets sold anyhow, but that's just you thinking it's bad music.

Ah, this phenoneman is being seen in many arenas. In the UK, loads of small and middle sized food / clothes firms have gone because those at the top got very good at dominating the retail space.
Isn't this music evolution this a bit like globalisation where the few dominate? There used to be lots of smaller mpizza places round here, but now the Dominoes franchise has just about killed em all off.
In other words those at the top have gotten really good at extracting every last penny from the market.

the trend in music would show the opposite. I mean you couldn't actually make an album let alone a career without major label support in the 70s.
Posted by tehlord on Jul-17-2012 16:18:
You know the chase to be different is overrated in my opinion.
Why not concentrate on being good instead?
There's that tedious old argument that Deadmau5 ripped somebody else off. Who cares? I heard it, it was great, I bought it.
In fact Random Album Title is the last physical media I bought.
Anyway
Almost the second you're different somebody else will come along and do it better anyway, so just do what you like doing and make it fucking rock. Chasing the trend won't work as everybody else is doing it. Dudes like Neelix make the same kind of thing over and over again, but he does it so well that his fanbase remains intact.
Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jul-17-2012 16:50:
everyone copies. I think having an identiy is the difference. Deadmau5 sounds like deadmau5. Even tho he changes, he sounds like deadmau5. That comes with knowing what hou like, and knowing what you don't like. SOunds simple but most people don't really have a strong sense of self. Most people don't really have clear cut defined tastes and that is required to sound like something that is unique to you.
Copying is not really the term. You are taking something you like, and putting it in your own context. That is different that using the same thing in the same context. Can't think of any artist that could argue his ideas are his own. The best way to learn and develop your style is to seek out as much music as you can and snag what you like. Every great artist did this.

No you interpret that in a wrong way then.
You will NEVER see me posting a comment like that anywhere.
I wont ever say that a song is bad if someone posts his-her music.
I will always try to give constructive opinions.
A song can't be bad imo cos it's the persons creativity.
Some songs i just don't feel anything ,no emotion ,only sound.
And then it's not my taste ,but i wont say it's shit
If i don't understand what they are trying to tell with their song
Then it's me not understanding their poetry ,not me saying its shit.
What i meant in the post above is
A hit can be created and most are
It's not always about earning it cos of the quality
You as artist are a BRAND
And with the right promotion you can sell anything
I even gave an example
The 538 dance smash was bought in that way 10 years ago
Ask around and you'll know i'm not just thinking this up
Thats just how it works ,not my opinion.
For the Dutch
On TV you saw Dewy when her album was presented she got a nomination.
At that nomination she herself made the mistake by saying the price was bought
More known artists have explained that it works that way ,thats not fairytale
I'll look if i can find the vid on youtube then i'll add it later to show.
*Why was it bought ?
At the tv show everybody heard that it got a nomination , so sheeple all bought it.
Cos then they can't be the one who does not have it
If it's got a price then the listeners want to hear it
Thus the dj's need to buy it to be able to play it
Hit building is promotion.
WHY do you think And when the rain begins to fall-Pia Sadora-Jermaine Jackson was such a huge hit ?
Pia sadora is super rich so that product had enough promotion money and became a world hit
Not saying it was a bad song , But that was a true bought hit to example one.
Old Trick:
Press 4000 vinyl
To Shops 2000
To Trash 2000
Tell to sales you sold 4000
4000 copies meant you were in hitparade thus got exposure
I wish it was about taste
The studio where i worked had an owner who taught me a lot.
She is singer-rapper and is signed by BMG
And she has been on various tv shows and performances [Op Volle Toeren]
In her studio many of the IT album songs have been created
And i've been to various big labels myself over the years as well
So i know how it works am not talking from my butt ,but am trying to give hope
What does a member gain by us saying their music is shit ?
Nothing ,so then you don't contribute in his-her possible success.
I rather explain how it works in commercial world so they don't think their bad if they don't sell enough.
That might inspire ,putting others down is only depressing those who are unsure about themselves.
I don't understand why the heck some folks out there seem to kick on talking others down here.
Your messing up the friendly atmosphere we've had here for years
And why ?
Doesn't it give you a better kick if you managed to be helpful ?
Come one WHY THE HECK so god damn negative dudes ?
I'm not here to brag ,got nothing to brag about ,am even disabled now.
I'm here to try and share what i learned over the years
And help the dudes here to avoid falling in the same traps i fell in.
I rather prevent it for them than say heck i had to endure it ,,,
So let them learn the hard way too
Thats not me i try to prevent , hope that makes it clear Posted by cryophonik on Jul-17-2012 17:09:

Yeah, the negative attitudes here totally suck. And, you'll notice that the people who consistently post snide and pointless remarks are the ones who usually have nothing helpful to offer. It's a shame, too, because I talk regularly with some of the talented and knowledgeable guys that used to post here regularly, but won't even waste their time anymore because of all the immature personalities.
Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jul-17-2012 17:20:
i'm helpful and negative. But i am also a paradox. Paradoxical as one might say. Although i would not say negative. A skeptic, sure. But what is a skeptic other than a hopeless romantic romantic who yearns for a place where eagles can soar to the right altitude.
Posted by PassiePassion on Jul-17-2012 17:57:
I don't mind looney ,i can use sarcasm too.
But there are many young new artists who take anything seriously and personal.
And they can become depressed or even throw their song away.
Some years back i even met a guy from the forum here in the city.
He on holiday so i showed him around as a buddy.
That was friendly and fun with sarcasm you never reach that.
The poster was just trying to make a point so i'm not sad or mad.
Just find it a shame that it gets seen so negatively.
And like said above many times the negative remarks come from members that don't even have a youtube or soundclick link.
So it's only attacking and not even showing they know what their talking about.
Thats a bit sad imho ,they could be great musicians ,But i can't hear it so can't judge.

I don't mind people saying things are badif they can explain in concrete terms that don't have to do with taste. Most people can't. MSZ and system j are notorious for imposing their tastes as the borameter to what is goodandbad.that shit annoys me.

"This is cheesy and bad yo"
"Why is it bad?"
"cause its cheesy"
"Can you explain it a little bit better?"
"It tastes like American cheese."
Posted by MSZ on Jul-17-2012 18:25:
So my trolling was a success, score! I listen to cheesey shit all the time :}
I want to fuck them both, in presented state though, I dont want to see how they look like now.

We agree on that then ,lol.
Taste is personal to everyone and can't be enforced only hyped haha
I love other opinions and other tastes as that inspires me as well.
Thats why i also make the type of music that i make.
I like notes so put many in while its more commercial if i would go more minimal.
I just got too much inspiration to create minimal
And like you i wont get-create a song cos its popular ,but cos i like it.
But you can really brainwash people into buying a song.
If your at your job and you hear the same song each hour.
Then it gets stuck in your head and you start to whistle it haha
Thats also what advertisement does
PS: old trick wont work anymore btw ,now you need sales stats.
So if you have a friend who owns a chain of record shops hahaha
Thats why only big labels can use that trick nowadays
You can't buy 2000 copies from 1 shop they'll figure that out now
If you organise parties you can
Put in a cd as your entrance card
Then all copies are sold thus that way you can still hype up an artist Posted by MSZ on Jul-17-2012 18:32:
Looney's taste is one-off. Its because hes clinically retarded, I cant really blame him. PEW PEW. I'll have you know it that I went to Julliard for my tastes faggot.

Thanks for the inspiration Darek
I bet you'll have a laugh haha
I recorded this text a while ago for moments like this where i get inspired to use the words.
So a lil musical fun
Made in a few minutes so just for fun
I used text to speech - A tool where you can load in text
And then let it save as audio.
You have various voices you can use
But off course it will stay robot sounding , so just for fun

When i was 13-14 I found this site called eurodancehits.com It was great, i was introduced to eurotrance videos. I probably know too many tracks, I called out some guy in the music producer forum stealing Lightforce - join me. I never discard what I once liked, I still like it.
Im gonna give that video a whirl later on D.

No idea really. Just keep on beavering away and see what happens.
Something I'm trying to do is go with my gut.
Give you example from last night. I was quite happy with this little lead sound and then got a nagging TA voice in my ear saying, 'mmm, it would be better if you made more of an Armin pluck', so I stopped and shouted 'go fuk yourself'.
