I dunno, I watched Iron Man 3 last night, and if there's anything I've learned from reading comics and watching movies based on them, it's that the biggest most butthurt fags turn into the nastiest most butthurt villains.

Best to watch out, wouldn't want him to SNAP and then hunt you down/kill you.

Posted by EarnYourKeep on May-10-2013 20:57:

he probably already snapped, i went in on him today...

You never "go in" on anyone you fat ass Asian clown.

Seriously it was one thing if maybe you actually were a hard Asian kid from the streets of NY. I'm friends with a few from uni who make you look like a fucking Twinkie. They don't speak in Ebonics because they have some pride in their heritage and don't need to act like they're hard for people to know they are. You're a complete phony. You're a soft ass fat fuck wannabe. Maybe if you weren't 5'6 240 and look like a yellow pillsbury dough boy I might take what you say seriously.

"I really went in on him today"

The only thing you went in on today was prolly a large #1 from McDonald's with another Big Mac on the side, shamu.

Yeah.

Still doesn't stop me from enjoying his work tho. I really liked Exit Through the Gift Shop

Posted by WittyHandle on May-11-2013 16:57:

I liked it too. I just think that his attempts at conveying a message are really weak. He's great at drawing attention to himself, and I actually do respect him for that, but his material isn't strong enough to merit the praise he gets.

And this one was painted with BIC pens:

I'd seen that last one before, it's excellent.

I like his stuff a lot, but yeah, he's definitely overrated.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on May-12-2013 00:04:

I've never known anyone to 'rate' Banksy, save for appreciating what he does: incognito and efficient work at the height of modern subversion. Maybe I have not read enough 'critiques' of him, but he has always seemed to defy such things. He's a great, in my mind, even if the technical work of others -often commissioned!!- is more elaborate, more classically artistic. What Banksy does is simply not the same as other artists, and he where and how he does it is precisely why it is significant.

People thinking he is 'overrated' and writing him off is precisely why he does what he does. Rating art is a dead end.

Posted by Lews on May-12-2013 00:11:

I think the issue more is the people who think he's the greatest and most brilliant artist of all time. I don't think any critics believe that, but a lot of people on the streets act like that.

I think The Streets are precisely his audience. He doesn't do work for critics. Maybe that's not to some people's particulars, but the inherently viral nature of his art speaks for itself.

I loved his book - Wall And Piece - because of his discourse. He can put a piece up under a minute and be gone; all trace of the person immaterial, all art of the persona lasting far beyond the point that authorities rinse it from their edifice. There is something beautiful and essential about street art to be said of how he works, even if it's woefully popularist in some sense, it is likewise invulnerable because of its temporal nature; and he is an artist because he is acutely aware of this.

I think there's more than one person operating in coordination under the name Banksy, but that's just my theory based on absolutely zero facts. I think Hal's right in that his appeal is largely based on what he gets away with undetected. For me that isn't any basis for a name I care about. The only thing that matters to me is what their work looks like. I respect that what he does isn't easy to get away with, but in the end all I really care about is the work an artist puts out. I don't care much if they suffered for years or whipped a piece off in seconds. The journey only matters after they interest me with their output.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on May-12-2013 01:31:

I have actually thought that, too. That Banksy is in fact a collective. I think the fact that we can speculate on such a thing is a testament to how amazingly elusive it is. As a phenomenon, of course, because you're right: judging on the merit of the piece itself is very important, which is why there are innumerable examples of better art pieces out there, but the 'artist', itself, in this case is elevated.

Posted by srussell0018 on May-12-2013 01:42:

When you take a shit and then stand up and nothing's there make it art?

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on May-12-2013 01:46:

Empty shit is the essence of advertising. Bombarding us at all times with no consent, save for leaving the house at all.
