London is one of the culinary capitals of the world. You can find amazing food from every corner of the planet. You have to be remarkably shit to eat bad food in London.

I couldn't possibly concur more than I concur right now.

I had awesome food in London: My first falafel (not a thing here, specially vegetarian), loads of Cantonese food, and some delicious pizza. Having said that, it took me 5 years to see my sodium levels return to normal after a dinner at Wagamama and my Nando's wasn't cheeky

Had a wild night in Atlantic City, me and my dad's friend picked up a couple of black queens. I don't know whether I should be excited or a little embarassed, as one of them was older than my mother. Ah well, good times, anyway.

I guess you could say you and your dad are now... The King of Queens

lol

nah, i really don't make much of it, but it was fun.

Now it is, but it's only a very recent development, in the last 5 years or so. Food was terrible in London unless you wanted Curry or Stodge.

Now it's arguably up there with just about any major European City but I totally understand why people have the idea that London and the UK is shit for food.

Funnily enough, London (Camden, specifically) was where I first discovered the wonders of Brazilian food.

I find it hard to believe you couldn't get good Caribbean food in London five years ago.

I'm not even talking about Michelin star restaurants and fine dining here. I've had amazing food for a few quid from market stalls. I know there's the whole street food explosion going on, but I find it a bit hard to believe you couldn't get a broad choice of international cuisine in London of all places until recently.

Maybe I should have mentioned, but they (my colleague's son and another boy) were at a family's home for a week. But also at the school they visited they all got something we would call Quiche, but it was that disgusting none of the kids ate it. Next day they got it again, but then cold.
My own experience was from a restaurant, probably cheap and nothing special, but I remember even the potato's didn't taste. I hoped my experience was an exception, but I was surprised to hear it again 28 years later, could be coincidence...

I'm aware of differences. But when starting the day on sandwiches with cheese or e.g. cervelat on brown bread is your habit, cornflakes or white bread with jam can make you feel hungry after breakfast.

Sounds like an overly broad generalization. School cafeteria aren't the gold standard for fine cuisine.

Sounds like it, but the reference is what they eat at home, nothing special at all, talking about teenage kids of 13 years old. Exchange was because of being at a secondary school with all classes in English instead of Dutch.

My hood! I grew up in Camden. It actually had a few decent restaurants (french, Brazilian and I think it was the first location of Wagamama's in the late 90's).

It's true though - if you speak to well versed travelers who haven't been to London in a few years, you'll get the same reponse: great city, terrible food.

one of my clients here has been a business traveler to the UK for 25 years, and up until recently he dreaded going because of the food but now he loves it.

Don't forget, English food is typically stodgy, fatty, salty food - Pies, chips, things in batter, sponge puddings - I fucking love it but truthfully it's crap compared say typical and basic italian or French cuisine.

It is great what's happened over the last few years, the food is now outstanding in the UK.

English food is definitely shit.

I've never been there but I have heard similar complaints about Ireland. Maybe you're right.

I've found crappy food abounds every where. In the USA fast food chains have taken over. Want a cappuccino or coffee made from freshly ground beans from a local cafe forget its all (MCD, DD, etc), Want a quality deli sandwich where they roast and slice their own meat, nope its all Subway, DeAngelos, etc.

Unskilled workers cranking out pre made assembly food. Many of the non chains are mediocre at best. Chef Ramsey had a show on crap restaurants and there are no shortage. I really appreciate when I go to a good restaurant and eat food that has been properly prepared by a chef.

Some of my best meals I enjoy eating and don't make me feel sick are from salad bars, where I can put together a light delicious salad instead of the carb, salt, grease laden food sold by most places.

decent restaurants ... Wagamama

Wait, I never thought I'd see these three words in the same sentence!

What should I have ordered and why isn't it ramen? Mine was so salty, I was thankful there was some sauce.
