Finally got a new laptop and ready to mix! Had my first "gig" too - a NY Comic Con afterparty. Unfortunately, the people there wanted me to play more "nerd music" instead of the deep/tech/prog/future house that I'm traditionally into, so they weren't really that into it.

But yeah, I've got a few ideas on how things can go with this, time to formulate a tracklist and go and record!

This despite me loving fluffy melodies in general and despite that there is a marked difference in tone between the first and second half. I also think you could have tinkered more with the set structure to line up the harmonies of the transitions a bit better. Considering how meticulous you'd have to be to get this 100% right, however, I can't criticize you too much for that.

Yeah, you're definitely right about it being super rich. Like eating 1 kg of chocolate mousse. If you flip through the set, it's basically just a wall of melodies, which I'm cool with and I can handle the richness but I totally understand if it would be too much for you. I never really bother mixing my sets in key since my formula is typically linear progression by energy, but this may have been one to consider. I must note that I shouldn't have really labeled any of it "retro" as the only one that qualifies is the Beckett track. Thanks for listening, glad some of the tunes worked out!

How is everyone else doing? I see Lews will be a bit late and Mr.Game+Watch and djdk have theirs on deck. How about planetaryplayer and Alphastarred? Need an update from you two.

The new deadline is technically coming up, but I will just let it expire. Just get them in before the end of the year, guys.

Honestly Ive been so busy that I just havent had the time to do anything. I think Ive only managed to touch my decks twince since September, and Ive a gig this weekend so needed to use that time to prep for that.

I do have a concept and loads of tracks all ready to purchase, just need to find the time to get it done (and listen to the other entries!).

I really wanted to be on top of this one and feel like Ive been prepping for aaages then life just went mental at the end of the summer and suddenly its fucking November lol.

Posted by AlphaStarred on Oct-27-2017 19:04:

I have most of the tracklist, just need to arrange it and finally do a mixdown. I hope to try and get it finished soon, sorry for the delay.

Posted by ziptnf on Oct-27-2017 20:02:

It's fine, guys. Take as long as you need. If you take longer than December 31st though, you're banned

Posted by planetaryplayer on Oct-27-2017 23:03:

i clanked the last transition the other day so i had to scrap it, did it again and forgot to beat match in the middle of the mix when i was talking to my girlfriend lol. its frustrating doing it live and messing up at the end.. that was like 2h wasted total

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Oct-30-2017 23:12:

Thanks so much for the extension, Nick! Did a test run and was mostly happy with the end result, so I'll go ahead and record for real, making a few changes here and there.

Well then. Here's some horror for y'all. I could had just slapped some tracks from horror movies together and called it a mix, but that would had been no fun. Instead, I chose to do a soundtrack of my own, to a horror film that does not (yet) exist.

So don't expect any kind of traditional DJ set here. You've got drone, IDM, death metal, trip hop and fun stuff like that to make you wonder what that sound under your bed is.

OrgaNik - The Demon Inside (Soundtrack To A Fictional Film)

01. Rob Zombie - A Hearse That Overturns With The Coffin Bursting Open [Zodiac Swan]
02. Simon Maverick - Silentwave.01 [Bief]
03. Burzum - Heljarmyrkr [Byelobog Productions]
04. Opeth - Ghost Of Perdition [Roadrunner]
05. Massive Attack - Fatalism (Ryuichi Sakamoto & Yukihiro Takahashi Remix) [Virgin]
06. Nine Inch Nails - 2 Ghosts I [The Null Corporation]
07. Akira Yamaoka - Hostility [Konami]
08. Oranssi Pazuzu - Hypnotisoitu Viharukous [Svart]
09. Sunn O))) - It Took The Night To Believe [Southern Lord]
10. Autechre - curvcaten [Warp]
11. Tricky - Valentine (Andy Stott Remix) [False Idols]

I quite enjoyed this, faded nicely into the background whilst working with the drone stuff before demanding my attention (and track list checking) with the metal tracks. I thought it was all woven together very nicely. Glad I listened in the daytime (with all the lights on just incase).

Posted by ziptnf on Nov-20-2017 20:13:

Yeah, nice set Nik. I wanted to find the right setting to listen to this mix but it never came about, so I listened to it at work. It was really cool, nice and creepy and the death metal added some excellent body to the atmosphere. I liked trying to imagine in my head the scenes that would accompany the tracks, but I ended up with a jumbled mess of a movie that had kind of a variety of random scenes where I couldn't tell if it was action/thriller or horror. I can't tell if that was my fault or yours

Either way, really cool concept and nice tunes, I could definitely feel the horror film vibe from it! Nicely done!

So finally here's my mix. I'm glad you gave the extension Nick as it meant I didn't have to rush this through! When I got this theme two scenarios instantly popped into my head; a summer festival road trip with a car full of friends where you need something full of fun and sing along moments and a solitary winter motorway slog where you need to get in a zone and chew through the miles. I plumped for the second option.

For a while I had a group of mates living in Bristol and had a fair few good nights out there. Living in London meant getting in the car after work and zooming down the M4 as quickly as possible.

For those that don't know, the journey from London to Bristol is pretty much one road the whole way, and a pretty boring one at that. It's also pretty much bang on two hours, an essential mix would fit the trip nicely.

What I wanted to capture with this mix was not just the feeling of moving along a rather monotonous road at speed but the other feelings that went along with this journey. The anticipation of what was at the other end, good company, good music, a cold pint! . Also the feeling of your car being this warm cocoon from the cold wet and dark winters evening outside. With that in mind, big chunky baselines, energetic percussion and a few trancey moments are the order of the day. Hope you enjoy

Looks absolutely brilliant, Dave. Can't wait to listen.

I think other people are happy to have the extension too, but we've only got 1 month before the end of the year. I'll be sending out some PM's to make sure everyone gets them in on time.

Thanks Meat! Yeah maybe some vocals would have broken up the absolute wall of synth melodies, and actually The Midnight track is originally a vocal track but I used the Instrumental here because I hated the lyrics

I still need to check out yours. Thanks for the reminder!

I've already sent out a few PM's - we need 4 mixes in 11 days boys!

So, nothing like waiting until the last minute. To be honest, the theme was "Deep South", something that I had a lot of trouble with. I'm a NYer born and raised, and aside from a week in Huntsville, AL back in 2005 for work-related training, don't have much experience in what is traditionally known as the "Deep South" of the US.

At first, I was trying to get tropical house with country and gospel influences (see: Damien Jurado - Ohio) and blues remixes (Bill Withers - Who Is He (Henrik Schwarz Mix)), but wasn't really feeling it. Then, I tried seeing if there was any sort of ambient bluegrass/futuristic bluegrass type stuff, couldn't find much on that... Then I thought I'd take the lazy route out and just throw together a bunch of early 2000's Atlanta crunk anthems. But then I reinterpreted things to fit more into my comfort zone and went more for the 'deep' side than the 'south' side... though the gospel and soul influences popular in the deep south still remain. Plus the mix features a track referencing Atlanta's most famous employer (that you're all sick of hearing by now) :P

This gave me much more motivation to finish, and I did everything in one take. A nice 2 hour set, with dare I say pretty decent mixing. Starts out deep, gets techy, and has some all out vocal anthems strewn throughout. I can picture driving on a rainy interstate through Georgia during the opening and middle, then down the I-75/85 through midtown Atlanta switching between the 8 lanes of traffic as the mix progresses.

Enjoy!

Thank you for submitting your mixes, guys. The competition is now CLOSED.

After speaking with planetaryplayer and Lews, they informed me of some personal reasons why they were unable to submit their mixes on time. Because of the good communication, I will extend their timeline to infinity. You gentlemen can submit your mix anytime you like, or not at all. However, I must ask that before you enter another challenge, that you do this mix first

Great job to all the participants, I'm happy to see so many different takes on so many different themes, even if they weren't favorable draws for some. I still have a few comments to hand out, so stay tuned.

We will see how busy my life is with a 4-5 month old baby this coming summer, and whether or not I have time to run or participate in another challenge mix.

I've listened to a few so far and will start posting reviews soon...

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Feb-03-2018 20:02:

Alright, so I finally took the time and listened to all of the other mixes. Some really great stuff in here, good job to everybody!

ziptnf - Electric Summer (Summertime Vibes)

This was the first mix I took a listen to, as I've got a bit of affection for synthwave. Phaserland - Smolder and Beckett - Rush. The mix started fairly laid back, reminiscent of sitting around in your backyard with a beer on a hot summer day, then continued to up the vibe to where you were racing around in your '86 Testarossa on a hot summer day. Very fun mix, will have to revisit it when it's not 20 degrees out here!

Mr. Mystery - The Demon Inside (Horror)

This was one I was pretty excited to hear, though I'm not a fan of horror movies/games/etc, the category meant it was almost guaranteed to attract something different from the traditional electronic music popular on the forum. It really feels like the soundtrack to an obscure B-horror movie, and has some pretty diverse soundscapes - the chilling 'illbient' of Silentwave.01, to death metal, to the bone-cold industrial of Akira Yamanoka (so happy you took my suggestion into consideration!), and to the droning track from Sunn (O)))), which feels like a dark ritual is about to take place. The only song that I felt didn't work was the spastic IDM of Autechre, was a bit out of place. But for the rest of the mix, I was able to nearly recreate a whole horror movie in my head due to the strong atmospherics and visuals I associated with the tracks.

the-sixth - Urbanity (Urbanity)

I really liked the start of this mix, with the glossy, crystalline synth tones, the chanting in Napier and Farewell Waters of Life conjuring up a bustling ethnic enclave. Liked Rabbit Mountain so much I swiped it for my mix But then, the mix promptly changes direction into cold, harsh techno... felt like going from a bright, warm, South Asian metropolis, to a decaying rust belt city during an arctic blast. The direction didn't really work for me since I was loving the early vibe so much. But the mixing was pretty good and you have some standout tracks on here.

AlphaStarred - Underwater Conspiracy (Underwater)

It was cold, dark, industrial, bubbling with acid riffs and varied in its beat structure. Mixing was pretty well done considering the diversity of beat structures and tempos on display here. Felt like it was taking place during an alternate-universe Shape of Water, where the sea creature completely ransacks the aquatic research lab the movie took place in. The breakbeat/electro tracks were probably my favorite. Slightly challenging listen for me but rewarding.

Sand Leaper - Peak Hours (Pride Vibes)

Opening with a cover of Sylvester's gay anthem, Mighty Real, I was excited for something that would be chock full of over-the-top, flamboyant, wailing diva house music. The next few songs, with their disco-y strings and diva vocal snippets, made me feel like I was in the midst of a pride parade. But then the direction shifted to more bass, moomba, and hiphop structures, which totally lost me. Then, back to some NY Hard House sounds, which I have a lot of nostalgia for, as catching a lot of the hard house radio shows in the mid 90's and buying Junior Vasquez mix CDs was some of my earliest exposure to underground electronic music. And then some all-time classic tracks, followed by a brief excursion into melodic 90's prog house (Antidote - Eclipse, which I fell in love with thanks to this mix). You have a really broad taste in music and I am constantly impressed with your crate digging skill, but I feel that you had so many songs you want to play out and so many different vibes you wanted to convey in this mix, that the set progression felt a bit schizophrenic.

Dave King - Escape To The West (Driving)

I listened to the majority of these mixes while commuting by car to my job in central Long Island. So here's a mix with a theme I'm able to quickly relate to. It had a bunch of chuggy tech-prog and melodic trance, genres I'm quite fond of. So yeah, this one definitely worked for me. Lots of big tunes here both current and classic, with a 4x4 version of an all-time favorite to end it. Very nice mix that'll help me deal a bit better with the traffic congestion on the LIE :P
