You're not assigning a value statement to that are you?

It just sounds like you're really taking it up the rear.

Dammit... I hit a dog on the road tonight

Every Friday night, I drive to my wife's farm. It's usually an uneventful journey, along a highway flanked by guardrails but no shoulder lanes. Now, thinking back, those damn guardrails seem like the very edge of a precipice as there's no room to swerve in an emergency.

Now, I obey the speed limits, drive safely, and all that. Tonight, though, it wasn't enough: out of nowhere, a dog launched itself from under the guardrail into the road, a mere heartbeat away from my car. My foot slammed down on the brakes instinctively, but at 80 kilometres per hour in the fast lane, all I could do was brace for impact. The dog, startled by the screeching tyres, ran but collided with my right fog light, tumbled into the adjacent lane, miraculously scrambled to its feet and, with a final burst of energy, bolted off into the darkness.

I wanted to stop, to help, to do something, but the road's unforgiving design left no place for refuge. By the time I found a spot to pull over safely, there was no canine in sight, leaving only the echo of my wife's panicked screams as she clung to the aftermath. She's adamant the dog must have died of haemorrhaging, as the bumper is about as wrecked as a Kardashian's relationship... so it's safe to say the three of us, pooch included, have had better Fridays

I'm so sorry. That really sucks. You've got my sympathies. There was seriously nothing different you could have done, no way to predict that was going to happen or even see the dog coming. Good call braking instead of swerving and putting you and your wife (and maybe someone else) in danger. Did exactly the right thing.

A few years back there was a dog running alongside the road on a sidewalk, I looked over and made eye contact with it, and it started trying to keep pace with me (heavy traffic, going slow ish). I did everything I could to avoid it when it suddenly bolted out into the road but it didn't matter, it crossed in front of a truck next to me and that was it. Police were on the scene quickly (it was in front of some apartments) and I gave a statement about what I saw and helped clean up, it was pretty bad. I found the collar (what was left of it) and the owner was just coming outside. I felt guilty for months like I had egged it on by making eye contact and encouraged it to come out in the road, even though I didn't hit it I felt like it was my fault. When I drove that road on my daily commute it was hard not to replay the scene in my head.

I keep extra nitrile gloves and garbage bags in my car now. I remember thinking that dog was just being a dog, and how unnatural cars were in comparison, all mass and momentum and metal.

It took a long time to shake it but it did get better. I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's rough.

Thanks... And, same, really sorry to hear your story too. Not sure it helps but maybe not looking at the dog wouldn't have done that much of a difference because, as hunters, they're usually excited by the movement regardless of visual contact, and it was only natural for you to look as you needed to know what exactly was going on.

Looking back, you're right and it could've been way worse if I had swerved, and I keep reminding myself there was nothing else that could've been done in a split second. I still can't believe I didn't get rear-ended, actually, as the traffic wasn't that light at the time.

That's rough, I'm sorry to hear that both of you. I've had a couple of cats dash out in front of my car on the streets near where I live, but luckily the speed limit is low enough in this neighborhood I've always managed to slam the brakes on in time. The thought of killing an animal - especially one that is loved by a family somewhere - is my worst nightmare. We lost a couple of cats that way when I was a kid, and I still have that feeling of dread when Claude doesn't come home at his usual hour. The little bastard is usually just asleep in a bush somewhere though, oblivious to the worry he's causing us.

I hit an animal once while driving at night, I think it was a raccoon. It's not something I'll ever forget. Just awful.

Sorry dudes.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Aug-05-2024 07:57:

glad you're ok lira!

i've luckily only hit a potaroo, and a bird flew into me once which i'm totally blaming on it because stu. felt bad about the potaroo but there was nothing i could do to prevent it and it didnt suffer. no domestic animals thankfully, but then again i don't support pets being allowed to roam free here; certainly not cats in our city. the local wildlife has yet to adapt.

So yes... everyone was right.

I currently have a diagnosis of: Bipolar, adhd and bpd... it's not just bipolar.

This was the very first thought that crossed my mind after I realised what had just happened.

But then, being the bleeding-heart hippie that I am, the moment I noticed it might actually be a stray (I could see no signs of ownership, like a collar), I then thought it might also be sad if something happened before the dog ever had a chance to be cared for.

Does this mean you're seeking professional help? I hope you are and wish you all the best.

Came mm close to hitting a deer once on a pitch-black country road.

It basically rubbed against the front bumper while I was driving about 50 mph.

Brights shining, all I saw was it staring at me seemingly shocked and in fear. Still remember that eye.

Could've been killed for all I know -- me and the deer.

The deer ran into the woods and I drove to the club. True story.

Happy Friday

Yesterday was awesome, I finally got to see DJ Marky for the first time here in my hometown! I had always wanted a drum'n'bass night here, and I was so stoked it finally happened. Besides, the guy is definitely the GOAT.

Problem is, the day after. My watch claims I did more exercise in 4 hours than I did in the previous 4 days combined, heh. I mean, I hit the gym daily, doing HIIT cardio and whatnot, so it's not like I'm sedentary or anything. And yet, I woke up feeling totally knackered, my shins were hurting, my lower back was aching, and although it improved greatly during the day, my hearing made me feel a bit like I was underwater. Totally recommend

I'm so happy to hear you're both OK and you were not speeding! I've heard so many stories about people hitting big animals that I'll never want it to happen again.

And yeah, every time you close your eyes, you'll have that scene burned into your retinas for a while. To this day, when I close mine, I can see the dog looking playfully at the traffic after coming out from under the guardrails nanoseconds before I slammed on the brakes and it realised it wasn't in Kansas anymore.

Damn, we got lazy in here eh?

What say you for this wknd as the end of 2024 draws to a close?

Are any of you still rushing to malls for christmas shopping or is it all 90% online purchases ( 🙋‍♂️ ) ?

Posted by JEO on Dec-13-2024 21:31:

We haven't gotten presents for the past few years now, except for the youngest ones in my extended family, and even that's usually just some money or gift cards. It's made Christmas, and the time leading to it, much more enjoyable.

There was this time in 2019 or something, when I was in a bookstore trying to find educational enough gifts for my nieces. Bookstores are usually cramped to begin with, and there were tens of people in there with fucking shopping carts. Took me minutes to get to the section I wanted to, and when I was at the counter, there was no line, just people with shopping carts huddled around the register going in random order. I was so frustrated I felt my throat/chest somehow get a lot tighter and I decided I'm done with the tradition for a while. I guess online shopping would make it much easier, but even then there's the question of what are you going to get everyone, and since it has to be something non-material for 90% of the people.. Screw it.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Dec-14-2024 20:46:

I hate shopping on a regualr day, let alone at Christmas. People are the worst.

Posted by 72hrpartyanimal on Dec-16-2024 16:57:

Man, do I hate christmas shopping. Was able to do all of my shopping on Amazon this year though. The kids are easy (some Bluey and polaroid camera) but the wife is always a tough one (ended up getting an electric kettle).

the tough part will be heading up to norther california to visit family and friends. Lots of driving to visit everyone and less R&R. It ends up being worth it but just so grueling getting through it all.

Posted by camshaft on Dec-17-2024 19:00:

Tried going to the post office to pick up a missed delivery yesterday...parking lot full, cars double parked all up and down the driveway, line damn near out the door. It's crazy out there. Online shopping as much as possible ftw.

Also re: the gauntlet of friends and family: most of our family on both sides is local so it can get out of hand quickly with filling up the calendar. Tried to do it all last year (all the family! host an open house! see friends!) and we were exhausted by the end of the break...going back to work was almost a relief. Cutting way back and doing minimal commitments this year. Sure can escalate quickly. Gotta protect that open space on the calendar!

Posted by Silky Johnson on Dec-18-2024 17:59:

My family on my husband's side is huge. We actually do a big party in the summer to make up for whoever can't make it to Christmas. We also started having our Christmas party earlier in the month. WAY less stress.

Posted by 72hrpartyanimal on Dec-18-2024 18:24:

I like the idea of doing a family summer event. Meeting family over the holidays can be super stressful. Plus the weather sucks. Looks like rain in the SF bay area next week

Posted by Silky Johnson on Dec-18-2024 20:57:

Yeah. And fortunately (or not? lol) for me, I have ZERO family, which makes our holidays pretty easy to navigate. My inlaws live just down the road so after we have Christmas morning at our place, we head over there for the rest of the day/night.

I suspect Im in the minority here, but I have a fondness for shopping centres. Not the shiny corridors or the piped-in music I couldnt care less for that but the rituals they allow. Every Saturday, without fail, we go. Its almost religious, in a secular sort of way. My wife, ever the diligent collector of rewards, loves December here in Brazil for the gifts these places offer. Spend this much, they say, and youll be a good consumer. She complies, joyfully. Weve already earned a set of ceramic plates with little Braslia motifs rendered in black and white, like a souvenir someone decided to make posh.

Later today, Ill probably find myself back there. I need a new pair of earbuds, and Ive been dressing up more often at the office an attempt, I suppose, to look the part. Perhaps Ill pick up some new work shirts, something sharp but not ostentatious. The kind of clothes that say, I tried so far but not too hard. In the end, it doesn't even matter.

I like that, well said. You're a good writer, Lira.

There's a book I read a couple years ago that touched on some of that, the idea of mall ritual and routine - "Meet Me By the Fountain" by Alexandra Lange. It captures a lot of the nostalgia of the mall heyday in the 80s and 90s.

Happened to be at the mall while reading your reply. It's a decently sized mall, probably one of the better ones in the metro area here, and I was thinking about how a year or two after covid it seemed like this mall was destined to slowly die like so many other malls have. I was shocked to see how jam packed it was now...30 minute lines in and out of the parking lots, no space in the parking garage, every store and avenue jammed with people.

I don't love all the traffic and frenzy this time of year, but being there it felt gloriously alive. It wasn't anywhere near this busy this time last year. Honestly it was kind of encouraging; it felt more normal than it had in years.

Oh nice Linkin Park reference, almost missed it, ha.
