Oops

Well, I've been quite busy because of my off-line life (university and many other stuff), which is why I'm not regularly posting here (nor using IM's) and my projects (such as this guide and my trancestep tunes) are "paused"

Once everything is sorted, I'm gonna work again on this map/guide (I've got all the raw material here: 120 pages of notes in MS Word and a massive amount of sound samples), but I need to organise everything while I find a reliable place to host such comprehensive guide.

There still several genres missing in that 1st post and that I'm going to add (like Noise, Power Electronics and other stuff that goth TA's and Acid Junkie told me about), not to mention that I'm still trying to find room to place "Hardstyle" somewhere in the map (I'm taking "hardstyle" as some kind of "Hard Melodic Trance" - if this definition is wrong, feel free to correct me ).

I'm hopefully finish this thing in 2004/2005. If you're wondering why it's taking so bloody long, here are my plans for the guide:

For those of you to whom I promised the map: I will send you guys it if I ever finish it Promise

I guess that's all I've got to say after one year... well, gotta go back to my studies now.

Feedback is welcome

nice work maaz my man, dont listen to all the negativve feedback, i think youve done an ace job mate.. although yeah i didnt see hardstyle on there.. think it should probably come sumwhere between gabba and techno.. as gabba>>hardstyle>>techno hardstyle>> techno.

techno hardstyle being the likes of DHHD n luna etc.

also i noticed there is no 'intelligent drum n bass' make an update man, it deserves after all the hard work

I could tell this was gonna be a resurrected thread. To be honest Ishkur's guide is a lot more helpful, even if he has some daft ideas about when certain genres came about (ambient breaks are from 1992 at the latest, and the Prodigy invented toy-town rave in 1991, not 1994).

Cheers Here are other genres I'm about to add: Noise,Power Noise (easily one of the most under-rated genres ever), Intelligent Drum'n'bass, Glitchcore, Electroclash, Disco house, pop, j-pop, shibuya-kei... well, many many genres I've already recorded the samples, now I just need to write and organise the damn thing

Indeed. The map itself, for the noobs, is almost useless, as they wouldn't know what the heck Darkwave is if they don't listen to it. I'm aware of this

Keep in mind that this map is just a draft and it'll be part of a guide as complex as Ishkur's (although I'm giving it a different focus, as it would be reduntant to remake his guide). But not only I've been very busy througout the year, I'm also a slacker, so I'm expecting the guide to be ready by 2005

Short answer: it's what I'd call "intelligent pop", "hardcore cheese" or "best genre ever".

Long Answer: It's a movement that happened during the 90's in a commercial centre of Tokyo, called Shibuya ("kei" stands for "style", by the way). As you know, post-war Japan was invaded by a huge western influence, giving Flinstones, hip hop, the hippie culture and Christianism the same importance/space on the media, for example. The Japanese people have always been keen on copying and improving (adapting to their original culture), and this was no exception. This genre has no fixed form (bpm ranges from 100 to 200) and no fixed sound (there's no "shibuya-kei" beat, for example), but a very distinct ideology, which reflects the enviroment they lived in. Extremely happy and bizzare rhythms and lyrics, influences from every "exotic" genre they can think of (specially bossa nova, giving birth to what they call "acid bossa") and parody to this new culture: this is the essence of shibuya-kei. Pizzicato 5 and Cibo Matto are the two most popular acts.

Pato Fu - Made in Japan
Pizzicato 5 - Brigite Bardot T.N.T.
Cibo Matto - Spoon

Some of my favourite Shibuya-kei tunes, although "Pato Fu" is actually Brazilian.

where is cheese? it should have its own spot

It does. You can label DJ Sammy as Epic House, Lasgo as epic trance, Vengaboys as happy house (which I need to add)...

Some of you may argue Lasgo is not epic trance. Well, you still have a massive amount of detuned saw-waves (in the case of Lasgo and Epic Trance, for example), female vocals (which is facultative), build-ups... characteristics that, epic trance shares with good old eurodance (and other similar genres)... keep in mind that progressive trance was responsible, like I said in another thread, for the houseification of trance, reason why epic trance can sound so similar to old eurodance at times.

This is actually a good think, because eurodance was fun. The quality of the recent "cheese" is a shame, though

*/me revives tread

Anyone experienced and kind to name out songs of different sub-genres based on THIS map?

edit: oops, didnt realise lira started another thread on naming tunes. please do it in http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=175082

Posted by Dave_Masters on Apr-16-2004 07:30:

hmm.. surely Trance is a genre of its own, and not a sub genre of 'Progressive' or 'Acid Trance'?

Posted by keddo on Apr-16-2004 09:04:

although the first post is very old, the guy worked a whole bunch on this map. Show the man alittle respect ffs make contructive comments instead of just bashing the whole idea. You could make it all alittle "wider" between the genres, so it doesn`t get so messy, other than that, good map!

Hint: Check Ishkur's guide (its link was posted several times in both threads, or you can visit the actual website for more tunes )

Yes, trance is a genre of its own: the "red" line represents it and its sub-genres

I've got to add this explanation somewhere in the map, I know

hehe, thanks

It will actually be wider, as I realised I've got no room for updates anymore Probably it may even be chopped into smaller bits, if really needed (althouhg I'd rather keep it just as one piece).

Sorry for the re-bump, but I didn't want anyone's question to be left un-answered

Because uplifting is a subjective definition (a tune can be uplifting to one person but depressing to someone else). The "uplifting tunes" you're talking about will be under epic and anthem trance

Posted by Sand Leaper on Apr-23-2004 07:23:

There is no such thing as "buttrock". It's just Goa / Psy trance with guitars. And are you absolutely sure that psy trance is a subgenre of Goa? Last time I checked people were arguing whether they were two different genres or just the same thing...

And where on that map would you put swedish tribal techno?

Posted by Lira on Apr-23-2004 12:20:

This "buttrock" thing, as far as I've experienced/read/been told, is nothing but a way to describe what we would call booty ballad rock. You can read explanations and definitions on this genre when you google it. However, for some reason, I often see this word being used for unusual rock (like rock'n'roll being played with shamisens and stuff of this sort). In this context, it fits the description of the map. I may, depending on my researches, change its name to metal goa: but I really wouldn't like to drop it from the guide.

As for swedish techno, because of the way techno's been evolving in the last years, it's become a regional thing more than other genres (you get swedish techno, german techno, italo-techno, j-tech... all genres with subtle differences between one another), reason why I'm gonna add a "regional techno" and explain the most important ones (unless I find a more accurate way of sorting the genres).
