But of course he's selling records to the majority white audience in America, so lets not glorify that fact. Funny, I don't see Rakim constantly on MTV complaining about how hard his life was (and it was), and how everyone is out to get him. Fuck Eminem. Consider him the best until you start listening to the underground. |
i don't like hiphop but i have a strange kind of respect for eminem...
i dunno bout that tune in 8 Mile but the one tune of his that i DO like is "The Way I Am"...what a fuckin awesome track, and the lyrics own.
so many contrasting views
It irritates me that some people can slam on other music so easily just because they don't 'listen to it' or like it.
It's a very childish thing to do really, as if somehow you believing 'all other' music is trash makes 'your music' better. Truth is if you think Eminem is a talentless piece of trash thats fine, but I'd like to see where your gathering this statement from? I don't "really" care for his music, but I can respect it for what it is. Some people on the other hand come in here with a cannon mouth cutting down somebody probably just because he's popular... puh-leeze
the glass ceiling just cracked
what you gonna do now?

If you NOTICE the periods it makes much more sense. he lost respect for the oscars due to the fact that they gave marshall an award. I can't deny that marshall has SOME talent, being that he is making it in hip hop and some of his colleagues respect him. however he is far from being the best...thats like someone saying Dj sammy ownz trance. so if he did win an oscar it was by default. |
sorry didn't know the N word was forbidden. didn't mean it like that though. here in Houston we use that word a lot. in a non racist way unless you are white and then you can't use it. those are the rules i guess. if there are any.

Hmmm.... Eminem. I'm torn.
Some of his lyrics are clever, obviously, but I still fail to see why he's being hailed as such a visionary. Half his songs seem to be about proclaiming how controversial he is, the other half seem to be about how he's being demonized for actually being controversial. And every song has some melodramatic self-pitying in it - you know about how tough his childhood was, about how harsh the critics and censors are and so on. This is where he's gone right though - he pissed off the right people and white pre-teens everywhere found a new way to piss off their parents. Afterall, it must be good music if it pisses off middle-class, conservative America right?
He sells by the bucket-load because he knows exactly how to stir up controversy (and any publicity is good publicity - especially in the music business) and he's been playing off that ever since "My Name Is". He's a lovable, baby-faced wannabe thug - with just the right mix of being "out of control" and expressing regret for being "out of control".
Oh and he's white. Anyone who wants to tell me that he'd be this popular if he was black obviously needs to look a bit deeper into racial politics. I reccomend you all read this article:
http://www.progressive.org/jan03/cobb0103.html
He gives the under-privilaged white youth a role-model in the post grunge world. That's the premise that ensures all the other elements of his personality can be sold in such huge quanitities, and guarantee him being fawned over by MTV and other interested parties looking to seem daring and "on the edge" with the material they wish to play and promote, without actually risking offending anyone or having to delve into politics. For all the talk of Eminem being controversial, I personally do not see it. Nothing he says would in any way risk losing or splitting his key demographic - namely angst ridden teenagers. Saying the word "fuck" or talking about "street level issues" like violence, isolation, despair or anything is not going to offend anyone apart from - as I said before - middle-class white America, and if you can piss them off and cause a stir in the conservative media, you're already half way to endearing yourself to the very people Eminem is trying to win over. If Eminem really wanted to be controversial, why doesn't he speak his mind on genuine political issues? Why doesn't he delve into more complex, divisive issues? He won't, quite simply, because he doesn't want to alienate his audience. For all his pompous parading as a controversial figure-head that everyone loves to hate and would love dearly to bring down, the fact is I cannot think of one thing he's said either publicly or in one of his songs that would piss off anyone in his key demographic.
And that's part of the problem: he has an entire culture in his hands, and the potential to make a massive difference to the society he believes is so wrong and out to get him yet he chooses to sing about himself and his problems with his mother. The acknowledgement of the cold reality of "the streets" (easy to sing about when you're as rich as he is) pretty much exhausts the extent of Marshall's foray into complex political and sociological issues. Why isn't he out there campaining for increased welfare subsidies then? Why has he made absolutely no effort politically to rectify the indifferent, uncaring society he so deeply loathes?
Some musicians have been able to make a massive difference to the age they live in through their music. Eminem just pisses me off with his self-important, self-imposed martyrdom. I have no problem admitting that his lyrics are clever, but that doesn't disguise the fact that he is at best a competent lyricist with the skills of a good salesman, or at worst a shallow, empty pop-star. Clever, perhaps. Genius, certainly not.
i agree with everything you said the article you gave a link to RENEGADE however when i listen to his music i don't think of all that shit i mean when you listen to music you don't automatically start thinking of all the shit pointed out in your post and that article.. i like his music and that's all there is to it...

I didn't write the article I linked to, but yeah, I wrote the post if that's what you mean.
