Getting Rowand will probably save them around 7-10 mil by just not resigning Abreu. Plus, hes 29, you can pick him up for 5 years at probably +6m per year. And unlike Abreu, hes not afraid to play the wall.

anybody notice the nice july matsui is having at the plate (still don't like his D).....8 hr (including the one he just hit).

.329/.401/.523 this year. I guarantee he gets no less than 10M a year.

if he continues hitting +.320 there is no way he'll go that cheaply. more in the range of 8M - 10M. Juan pierre is making 7.5M a year and isn't anywhere near as good as rowand in the field.

*raises hand* Ok, ok, I have no idea about finances. But Im sure he will get closer to 8m than 10m, because this is just one year, before this he was a .270 hitter.

Hes making 5.065m right now, I dont think he will jump to 10m for one breakout season. 8m-9m seems more reasonable.

Point is, they get someone better defensively, at the very least similar offensively and younger for almost half the price.

i don't know about that....there are a few factors that suggest he might...while he's no ichiro, remember he just signed for $19M a year. that will have some effect. Also, players are rewarded for breakout seasons all the time...eg., farnsworth, JD drew, javy lopez, etc... i think he very well could get more than 10M, but i think the fact that he is a career .280 ba/.344 obp/14hr kinda guy will play against him a bit. that's why i only put 8-10.

I take it that 24 runs in one day is good enough for you guys....wtf is going on at left field..who is our LF Damon Masui or Melke...who is our CF Melke or Damon...

Posted by Vlad on Jul-22-2007 02:44:

Steven, does it matter who is in the outfield? Aside from Melky, NONE OF THEM are competant enough to be there. They are better off calling Bernie to play CF, he will definitely hit better than the .230 Damon is flirting with.

It matters to me because Melke has become some sort of utility outfielder..He's either not playing or playing out of position...Johnny Damon is a joke at left field with his weak arm...Tell me Vlad/James,,why Melke at CF and Damon at LF with Matsui DH...Surely it should be Melke @ LF,, Matsui as DH,, Damon @ CF

Damon and Matsui play LF because they have weak arms. CF is the deepest part of the field, so you want you best fielder there, which is why Melke plays CF.

If the Yanks pick up Rowand, Melke can go back to LF, and Matsui can be the DH. Damon will become the utility player.

Posted by jerZ07002 on Jul-22-2007 03:03:

the strongest arm should be in RF (because he has the furthest throw to 3B), which is why melke should go there when/if abreu is gone. LF is usually the worst outfielder because you don't need a strong arm to throw the ball to 3B. CF should be the fastest fielder because he has to cover the most ground.

Damon is in LF because he has the worst arm. Right now Melke is the most mobile outfielder so he is in center. You all know what i think about Matsuis fielding, but i choose him over Damon.

i would prefer to have those 24 runs spread evenly over 4 games and that done consistently. A team will win many more games than it will lose if it consistently score 6 runs a game.

Ok then,,so why when Matsui was out Damon stayed at CF and Melke at LF

Because Damon is a natural CF, its where he is most comfortable... so Im sure it was just for the sake of comfort over a prolonged period of time.

don't worry about that rule, it's so obscure almost noone knows about it. if the DH moves into the field the pitcher has to bat in the spot of the person who is leaving the game, or something like that....im not even sure i understand it completely.

lol, I had no idea about that rule either. It never happens that the DH goes into the field, so you never see the rule go into effect.
